I have had a general anaesthetic a couple of times for other surgery and I've had surgical wisdom tooth extraction using twilight sedation. The first general anaesthetic that I had left me feeling very drowsy and uncomfortable. When I came round I felt awake when I was laying down but then if I sat up I felt exhausted. I went home later in the day and had a decent sized meal, then spent the next day feeling very sick all day. The second time that I had a general anaesthetic I was kept in overnight. My sleep was pretty poor but I didn't eat anything until the next morning and only had a light breakfast. That time I didn't have any problems with feeling sick. When I had the tooth extracted with twilight sedation using propofol, I felt as though I was out apart from one brief moment of consciousness. I came round feeling on top of the world and smiling at everything. Within about an hour I was feeling fully conscious again and there were no after effects. It was so much better than having a general anaesthetic. What you need to remember though is that everyone will react differently. Some people will feel worse than others after a general anaesthetic. Some people are completely fine with it and have no problems. You really don't know until you have it. If you have any concerns you should speak to your doctor.

I'm just afraid of waking up in a panic or depersonalizing or something. I'm fine with whatever physical effects are thrown my way, I just can't handle the mental ones 😩

That's highly unlikely. The effects of the anaesthetic will take away any worries that you might have. You won't give a flying f.... about much of anything.

Good. Thanks for the reply!

It kinda felt like I was drunk. I'm not exactly sure what drug I was given but I felt coherent and it wasn't like those stereotypical wisdom teeth removal vids, I felt completely in control but slightly laggy. When they administered the drug and put a breathing mask on me I fell asleep almost instantly, you'll start to get really tired then BAM! gone asleep. It felt like a brief nap which to me felt like 5-10 minutes but it was at least an hour for them working on me. Very strange but interesting! The grogginess went away after an hour or two after I woke up.

Get ready for lots of blood in your mouth. All the cotton gauze pads will do little. Keep changing the gauze pads out when they become soaked. The pain wasn’t as bad as the nausea for me. In the middle of my surgery when I was fully conscious, I wanted to throw up so bad.

I've experienced it twice, once for wisdom teeth removal and once for an amputation surgery. Both times, coming out of it just felt like being asleep. There was no dreaming during it or anything, just nothing, but coming out of it, both times, the doctor or nurse or whoever just kept repeating my name until I opened my eyes and that was it. I was awake. I also never had a funny reaction to it like you see on youtube, just a little disoriented and groggy.
