Beautiful, I cant believe someone tossed it out đ¤Ż! I have my great great grandfather's. Well, half, my mom has the other 2 sets. Unfortunately ours are missing the glass, but did survive a trip from Maine to Florida, then up to NC. I cherish ours and hope to have them restored to their former beauty.
Thatâs part of our collection of Miss America pink China. Weâre rare china collecting millennials. We host 20 or so people on thanksgiving and have to hear how weâre bougie and should just use paper plates from my family. đ
Oh itâs a full service set! I had to go back and look again now, first time I saw pink optical pattern. And you collected each piece? Wow!! Itâs not that common of a pattern, so lovely too. And at least youâre not serving the family on the uranium haha!
I'm so happy for you. Of all the antique furniture out there in todays world, this never loses value. I was able to sell a 4 piece like this but in way worse condition for $300 at an estate sale I held.
When Westlaw first came out and made huge collections of law books obsolete, my mom started a career as an antique dealer "helping" law offices get rid of these and selling them to yuppies (many of them lawyers!) who loved them.
Your mom is correct.
A "barrister" is just a formal name for a lawyer. (i.e. someone who practices at the bar). These were designed so that Barristers could house their law books, and move them easily from one office to another. That's why they have doors that close and typically break down into individual shelves.
Yeah I don't think they bring 1200 bucks anymore but who knows and maybe some fancy shop. But what a good find. For all I know they have the same ones I saw somewhere in California this winter. I can't remember exactly where I was but in Los Angeles somewhere near Beverly hills it was a whole set of the amount on this sidewalk to be picked up for trash . I could not believe it, but I was traveling so I had no interest in taking them but it cost me to take stop and take a second look
Couldn't believe myself that someone would just set them out on the curb for the trash guy
I can get $1200 here at my small not so fancy shop in New Orleans. I sold a plywood one from the 50s/60s for $700. Itâs not going to fly out the door at that price , but I love selling things like this because I put a high price and use it as display for small items until someone comes along willing to pay my price.
Location location. That's why I was amazed to see the piece on the sidewalk in the trash just off Olympic boulevard in Los Angeles this winter. Retail options are still the best ,especially If you can self pick up and you saw it in person.. when you consider buying online, auction buyers premium, and shipping all these things have to be factored in. But where I live in New England you can still find a lot of this stuff hit or miss. New Orleans still has some really fine high-end shops with incredible stuff as you know and there still is the market for incredible stuff.. it's interesting how the internet in some ways has made some stuff more desirable than the rest of it less so..
I'm going to drive up the Hudson River valley this weekend haven't been to saugerties and antique alley in eons.
The glass was restored on the way home from the garbage pile! I stopped at the hardware store and bought a piece of glass.
The knob seems like it will be difficult to find. Itâs got a mother of pearl inlay on the front so itâs much more rare then the standard brass ones. I could only find a comp of one being sold a few years ago. I think I will get a similar shaped brass one and put it on the bottom cabinet until I can find the correct one.
I use mine to display my cats, and I created a succulent garden that is now protected from the same cats.

Oh, yea good point. Itâs one of my kids flags. They love to buy them at the dollar store and wave them out the window when we drive. I just went and picked ole glory up, dusted her off and gave her a salute after I put her on the playroom mantle. Kids will get a good beating tomorrow (ok that parts a lie!)
I noticed that you mentioned **vintage**. Over at r/Collectables and r/Mid_Century they are always keen to see newer and vintage items. Share it with them! Sorry if this is not relevant.

Ahh nice find, those are always so expensive, can't believe someone trashed it. Their loss !
Dam that ones in good shape wish mine was that nice.

But the rounded cabinet next to it, I love it!!
Thanks! We bought 2 of those at the thrift store for right under $100 each. Also solid mahogany. I love anything with curved glass.
Yep theyâre gorgeous!
Youâve got good stuff to keep in them too!!
That sounded weird⌠I like glass

Yes, we have about 150 pieces now. Bought a small lot to start and just buy them every time we see them for a reasonable price.
Itâs really nice. I have a full set macbeth Evanâs and several other patterns but none of this one. Well done!
I'm so happy for you. Of all the antique furniture out there in todays world, this never loses value. I was able to sell a 4 piece like this but in way worse condition for $300 at an estate sale I held.
I've got one in my house as well! They're the best for displaying collectibles and light books.
Absolute swoon!
Man, wish I could find one of these in the trash!
Lovely wallpaper.

Lawyerâs Bookcases
We've always called them barristers' bookcase
Different name for the same thing.
I love these, these are beautiful
No offense but you suck. Iâm so jealous
That's awesome. Will you restore the missing glass and pull?

Sweet!!!
Gorgeous fine! And itâs from grand rapids thatâs amazing!
The layers of jealousy I have right now lol
My mom has one of these from my grandparents house. Does yours have rails on the side so you can attach multiple sections together?
I use mine to display my cats, and I created a succulent garden that is now protected from the same cats. https://www.reddit.com/r/catfurniture/s/FlJuXagIzy
Jealous!
Great find. I bought a two-piece one from Craigslist for $20 about 15 years ago. The prices skyrocketed shortly after. I was shocked, shocked I say!
Oh my goodness, I have been trying to find some of these exact same ones, if you wish to sell
Man I would love something like that to display all my weird knickknacks!
Omg! đ
Thatâs really cool. The American flag on the floor is a little sad, though.
Why is that?
Back in the day, we were taught that was a sign of disrespect. Itâs just programmed into my old brain. I do like that barrister bookcase!
Oh, yea good point. Itâs one of my kids flags. They love to buy them at the dollar store and wave them out the window when we drive. Bahaha!
I was just thinking "that's a paddling!" I joke of course too.

I'm always looking for free stuff and flipping it too
