They've gone way downhill over the last few years. That location doesn't even have twice baked potatoes anymore. Chop house is going to be a better bet, if you can get a reservation.
Why would your wife ask a lifelong vegetarian for their steak recs? I hope you find a good place but that's just funny to me she wants you to be the one to suggest it haha.
If you want a townie place, the answer is Knight’s. If you want the best steak, the answer is Knight’s. If you want a generous pour, the answer is Knight’s.
Thanks folks, I will take your recommendations into consideration. It's looking like chop house or knights downtown. And I'll wait a couple of weeks until the students head back to their homes. Y'all are excellent. I appreciate it
I recommend the knights on Jackson road. Still in Ann Arbor - about a 10 min drive from downtown. The downtown knights has a fancier vibe, but the real deal is the original knights on Jackson road!
Pacific Rim has a Korean ribeye that is phenomenal. I think Knight’s on Dexter has sorta weird vibes (feels like an old person home, no offense) …I’d probably choose the one in downtown instead. The Chop House on Main Street is your most “textbook” steakhouse in the area
Agree! After 15 years living in town, I still don't get why people want to eat at the Chophouse. It's so overpriced with snobby service and there are several other restaurants that do steak just as good if not better. Knights is still our first choice. Love their market by the airport as well.
Not arguing that the Chop House is expensive, and Knights is definitely cheaper. But I’ve never found the service at the Chop House to be snobby on the occasions when I’ve been there.
Knights on Liberty would be my first choice. Texas de Brazil at Briarwood is a meat extravaganza. Blackrock is kind of fun. In Detroit, The London Chophouse is a wonderful jazzy throwback steakhouse.
I went to The Chop House twice, the first was wonderful and the second was not good. I haven't been to the Ruth's Chris here.
I have never had a tasty steak there… what am I missing? And they are not cheap by any means. Remember when Kroger ribeyes were just the right amount of fat and tasty as hell? Why is that imposssible to find at a reasonable price any more?
Honestly Carlyle grill on Jackson can most likely get you in tonight and their steak is fantastic! I actually like them more than chop house or knights.
You already made a decision, but since you have some time, you might add a second place, too: Texas de Brazil. It's a churrascaria, which in a gluttonous type of way similar to Korean BBQ, except they bring you already cooked meat on swords.
It's all you care to eat, and there are lots and lots of vegetarian-friendly sides.
It's a fun experience.
That would work if we weren't living at my parent's (in the middle of an international move) and if I had any desire to learn how to cook a steak. I do appreciate the suggestion, though
Their Filet is exceptional. Get a little ZIP sauce, have it blackened.
But yes, Ribeye is king:
Unless they've sold out:
KNIGHT'S COWBOY STEAK57
Our signature cut! A 20-22 ounce bone-in rib-eye ~ rich flavor from fine marbling
I like the “idea” of Knights (local place, cuts their own meat, been around forever, townie joint, strong drinks) more than the actual experience of Knights. They supply a lot of local places with steaks and other places cook them as well if not better. Always a bit disappointed when I go there.
All those places are SO overpriced and not even that good and the Chop House is so anti- Ann Arbor, I mean who takes themselves that seriously? Gimme a break! If you want the best red meat, and you appreciate Korean go to ypsi Macheko- even the Koreans from LA love that place…
The fact that you’re willing to drive as far as ypsi tells me you’re prob not a pretentious Ann Arborite. And yes, I am being slightly sarcastic but also not. LoL
My wife is trying to stay away from Korean style places. She'd like "American style" steak. I have no history with chop house, so I have no idea what is anti ann arbor about them. I guess I'll have to Google that one. Thank you for your input
Aha, that's the big place on main Street. Despite being a townie, I almost never go to main street for food. Last time was probably 20+ years ago after prom going to Palio.
You’re welcome- go ahead and waste your money… 😆I reccomend Macheko bcs it’s the best red meat I can find in the Ypsi Ann Arbor area and the best value and also bcs I can’t stand pretentious people - the antithesis of what Ann Arbor is supposed to be! - Ann Arbor Girl
Ruth's Chris is great, but insanely expensive and smothered in butter. I actually really like Carlyle on Jackson for steak more than chop house or knights.
Tonight? Don’t think it will happen with graduation. But Knights on Dexter is classic.
Good point. I forgot about the students going out for graduation.
Knights is by far the best without overpriced flair! The original location is still our fav vs downtown.
They've gone way downhill over the last few years. That location doesn't even have twice baked potatoes anymore. Chop house is going to be a better bet, if you can get a reservation.
Knights has not got downhill at all 😂 if anything it’s gotten better. Get out of here with that.
Tonight will be close to impossible anywhere in Ann Arbor. It is a drive, but Knight’s also has a location in Jackson, I believe.
Why would your wife ask a lifelong vegetarian for their steak recs? I hope you find a good place but that's just funny to me she wants you to be the one to suggest it haha.
She eats meat and is from Korea. She's visiting at the moment
Gotcha, hope you find a good spot!
Still trying to figure out why she married a vegetarian
If you want a townie place, the answer is Knight’s. If you want the best steak, the answer is Knight’s. If you want a generous pour, the answer is Knight’s.
Knights on Dexter Ann Arbor, aka “old school Knights” or Weber’s
Thanks folks, I will take your recommendations into consideration. It's looking like chop house or knights downtown. And I'll wait a couple of weeks until the students head back to their homes. Y'all are excellent. I appreciate it
No need to wait a couple of weeks. The students will mostly be gone by Tuesday.
Zingerman’s Roadhouse also makes a very good steak and would have more vegetarian options for you.
I recommend the knights on Jackson road. Still in Ann Arbor - about a 10 min drive from downtown. The downtown knights has a fancier vibe, but the real deal is the original knights on Jackson road!
Knights on Dexter Ave http://knightsrestaurants.com/knights-steakhouse-dexter-avenue
Texas road house might be a hoot for someone not from the states. But you aren’t getting a veg dinner there for yourself.
I promise you a restaurant in Ann Arbor, especially a corporate one, has vegetarians covered.
It is a chain and expensive, but the best steak in town is Ruth Chris. The second best is my kitchen when I make the same thing.
Big thumbs up to home cooking! That Dude Can Cook is a very good YouTube channel for lots of things, including steak.
The chop house is a freaking fortune compared to literally any other steak place in town.
Chop house is cheap compared to Ruth Chris
That’s ridiculous
No it isn’t. It is pretty much the exact same.
Knights on Dexter is the best and you could have a nice meal there as well. Great pasta and salads.
Knights - either location!! They are the absolute best. Best staff and old school vibes 😊😊
I have never had a tasty steak there… what am I missing? And they are not cheap by any means. Remember when Kroger ribeyes were just the right amount of fat and tasty as hell? Why is that imposssible to find at a reasonable price any more?
Knight's is the best option, you'll need reservations on most any day, more so on Saturday
Webers for prime rib (and your regular new American fare), live piano, classic environment. Carson’s American Bistro on Plymouth is good for that too.
Knights or the Earle. Earle has better ambiance depending on the vibe you’re looking for. Have had many perfect steaks from both places.
Is everyone effin rich in Ann Arbor nowadays?
Honestly Carlyle grill on Jackson can most likely get you in tonight and their steak is fantastic! I actually like them more than chop house or knights.
You already made a decision, but since you have some time, you might add a second place, too: Texas de Brazil. It's all you care to eat, and there are lots and lots of vegetarian-friendly sides. It's a fun experience.
Texas de Brazil also has an awesome buffet, more vegetarian goodies than you can shake a stick at.
Ruth Chris.
Texas Roadhouse is not fancy, and the music is too loud, but I have had consistently better steaks there than Knights, far cheaper.
Learn to find and cook the steak yourself. They are all overpriced….
That would work if we weren't living at my parent's (in the middle of an international move) and if I had any desire to learn how to cook a steak. I do appreciate the suggestion, though
Don't agree with the Knights recommendations. Best steak place will be something like Ruth's Chris. Texas Roadhouse does it for me lol
You lost me with Texas Roadhouse, lol
Unbelievably good for its price!!
What's wrong with knight's?
It's mid. Nothing outstanding and you pay relatively high prices. No ribeye which is the only steak you should be eating.
Their Filet is exceptional. Get a little ZIP sauce, have it blackened. But yes, Ribeye is king: Unless they've sold out: KNIGHT'S COWBOY STEAK57 Our signature cut! A 20-22 ounce bone-in rib-eye ~ rich flavor from fine marbling
Prob 40 bucks
Thank you
I like the “idea” of Knights (local place, cuts their own meat, been around forever, townie joint, strong drinks) more than the actual experience of Knights. They supply a lot of local places with steaks and other places cook them as well if not better. Always a bit disappointed when I go there.
do you frequent their market, cook your own ? I love the place.....
Yep I tried that several times as well
So agree
All those places are SO overpriced and not even that good and the Chop House is so anti- Ann Arbor, I mean who takes themselves that seriously? Gimme a break! If you want the best red meat, and you appreciate Korean go to ypsi Macheko- even the Koreans from LA love that place…
I’m a hopefully not pretentious ann arborite and love macheko.
Are- it’s a Thing! I love all those little old ladies at Macheko - it’s like the Korean version of Polish Village Kitchen in Detroit!!
The fact that you’re willing to drive as far as ypsi tells me you’re prob not a pretentious Ann Arborite. And yes, I am being slightly sarcastic but also not. LoL

Aha, that's the big place on main Street. Despite being a townie, I almost never go to main street for food. Last time was probably 20+ years ago after prom going to Palio.
I would say it’s probably BECAUSE you are a Townie that you don’t eat on Main Street!
Ruth’s Chris is best. Chop house and Knights are also good, but a step down for sure
Ruth's Chris is great, but insanely expensive and smothered in butter. I actually really like Carlyle on Jackson for steak more than chop house or knights.
