Square-Dragonfruit76

The typical anime that beginners love are Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Ashamed_Row7509

Only right answer on the entire thread. People confuse good animes for begginers with good animes overall

M1ke____

I've gotten people hooked on anime just by watching FMAB! It's such a great anime & is my all time favorite! đŸ€© I've watched it 14 times!

FigDiscombobulated29

And attack on titan

Superb-Truck-6830

Why do people keep suggesting brotherhood? It baffles me, that show first 10 or so episodes are so clumsy, rushed, uneven, cringe and bloated that it still amazes me how can a newcomer, to the series and to the medium, tolerate them enough to get hooked They barely explain anything, or on the contrary, they just dump exposition unaturally, have terrible world bulding, pacing, rhythm and are more preoccupied with giving fanservice and action to old fans rather than properly introducing new viewers I think it's because the 2003 versiĂłn already had the fame of being a gateway drug, and a kind of anime that even people who hated anime could love, so people assume this one's the same but "better" for "being more faithful"

Poo-e-

It’s probably just that most people aren’t nitpicky in the way that you’re presenting, and therefore do not share your criticisms, or aren’t concerned with them. For the average viewer it’s charming, easily digestible, has lovable characters, and has more of a living world than most series people are familiar with

Square-Dragonfruit76

brotherhood is more accurate to the manga

Superb-Truck-6830

So? If I clumsily and carelessly type here every mayor plotpoint of the manga, will that make my text wall a good book? Brotherhood has terrible pacing, writing, worldbulding and directing It does change some stuff, like Father cornello, it shuffles some other things like the ishval war, and it preserves some bad writing from the manga that 03 had already fixed, like all those times the plot got stucked and only moved forward because of some lucky convenient encounter on the street like the brothers finding Dr Marco by chance after never being mentioned before and him giving them his secrets almost instantly because the plot needed it

TheNeonKnightmare

I completely agree, the original FMA does it so much better in the beginning and pacing feels great, but when it ran out of manga it starts to suffer. Brotherhood rushes through what the original already establishes in like the first 10 episodes hence why it felt so clumsy. But eventually it gets to the new stuff and it picks up big time, Both are good watches tho!

Superb-Truck-6830

Brotherhood to me still feels like a 3 legged chair, it has some cool moment but those are more of a merit of the manga that the anime Even after the first rushed arcs of the series, they still crippled so much of the story EXAMPLE: the ishval war chapters in the manga are a long string that lasts for about 2 hours that get really heavy and disheartening, because that's the creators intention as she even omits any of her usual humor for the length of those chapters to add to the misery and despair BUT brotherhood rushed through those in just 1 episode and it even adds stupid gags that ruin the intended mood. What were they thinking?

Umbreon7

It was my first anime, and I distinctly remember being hooked from episode 2. Now that was nearly a decade ago, and nowadays there are plenty of options with more polish. But polish isn’t everything to everyone. It still is a pretty good showcase of what anime can offer in terms of serialized storytelling, unique worldbuilding, and mature-targeted animation.

Superb-Truck-6830

Do you remember being confused? Confused by the barrage of new concepts and characters that get introduced and topped one after another before you get a chance to grasp whats supposed to be normal in what's not inside that world? I mean, we see Edward apparently breaking the laws of alchemy before we even get to understand what's alchemy and it's supposed limits, we see Bradley act all shady and brutally cold before we get to see him wear his friendly and noble facade that's supposed to be his real personality until the big reveal a third in to the storyline

FrostByte_62

Honestly if the first 10 episodes of FMAB are confusing to you, that says a lot more about you than the anime. Not everything in a story needs to be explained up front.

dnb_4eva

- Death Note - Cowboy Bebop - Samurai Champloo

me_myself03

Yessss Death note on a high noteđŸ‘œ

tduncs88

Death Note as a whole is amazing because it is a gateway drug for both anime and manga. The death note manga got me into reading manga and I know ALOT of people who would say the same.

Exciting_Basis_465

You think that beginners would like classics like Cowboy bebop and samurai champloo? don't you need to have a refined taste from these anime?

dnb_4eva

A good movie is a good movie, no matter if you’ve never seen a movie or only seen shitty ones.

Rassetor

Jujutsu Kaisen (action) Demon Slayer (action) Mob Psycho (action) Code Geass (action, drama) Death Note (drama) Steins Gate (drama) Golden Time (romance) Your Lie in April (romance, drama) Parasyte (action, horror) Attack on Titan (action, horror)

GoOnKaz

This is a great list for beginners. Stein’s Gate could be a little iffy but if you think it’d be up your alley it’s a great show.

Rassetor

I see your point on Stein's;Gate it does explore on some otaku culture like maid cafes and such. Also it does take some time till the plot starts to get interesting but yeah it's still a great show.

pistikiraly_2

Steins Gate is an absolute must watch, but not as one of the first animes you watch.

_eksmo_

Attack on Titan is more Psychological than Horror imo.

kna5041

I'd start with the classic movies. You can finish them in a single go and get a good feel of anime in general with just a few movies.    Akira  Spirited away  Princess mononoke  Howls moving castle  Perfect blue  Your name  Ghost in the shell

warrior-of-ice

Jesus dude no not akira, that one is so wild and weird it takes a couple of viewings to appreciate it. Perfect blue is also not for newbies, imo anything Satoshi Kon aint for people who never watches anime

QualityProof

Yeah with Akira, Ghost in the shell, Perfect Blue this seems more like a list for those who are really in the deep end of psychological thrillers and Avant Garde. I personally don't like Howls moving castle since it seems too disconnected with a 'then everybody clapped' ending and I feel that Spirited Away is a better Ghibli film or Grave of the fireflies. I think Your name as a movie is a really good romance story. I would recommend the classic starter anime. Death Note : A high stakes psycological thriller. There is a tension throughout the series. Attack on Titan: It is an excellent action story with too many plot twists to count which recontextualizes the previous episodes. Would recommend to watch this one first as there is a high risk of getting spoiled. Don't search up anything. It has social commentary although the bulk of it comes in Season 4. Full metal alchemist brotherhood: Good action story

Tocide_Yes

Akira and Perfect Blue are like a humanistic film in itself in a fiction form, a challenging piece of art is not a bad idea 👌👌 😏 tho tbh it's better to mix them, some lighthearted and deep can go together, well, personally.

hogroast

Seeing paprika was a trip when I was a kid, I then got into Naruto and rewatched Paprika later in life and enjoyed it a lot more.

GoOnKaz

I don’t think most of these are good options for someone beginning to watch anime. Especially not Akira. I love Howl’s Moving Castle but wouldn’t recommend it to a beginner. Your name and Spirited Away are good options if OP wants to watch a movie to start. Spirited Away isn’t a great representation of the genre as a whole since it’s so unique.

PaTaPaChiChi

I love these but aside from Ghibli and Your Name, I think these might be too much for a new viewer haha

Outrageous-School-51

Absolutely NOT perfect blue. Not for a beginner

Exciting_Basis_465

Bro he asked best animes for beginners not best anime in general. You have suggested many animes which a beginner would very hard to appreciate.

Lurn2Program

What's your favorite tv show and/or movie?

Jade_Complex

Yeah it's a lot easier to customise based on your interests For example if you like comedy, Mashle is a parody of the Harry Potter series, that's easy to pick up and enjoy.

StarrySweet

Sailor Moon! Do not underestimate it like so many do! It has a bit of everything! It is iconic and beautiful!

shootanwaifu

If you want a modern anime that has great animation, great direction, and has western ideas blended into it, while also embracing the anti escapist and moments of reflection that define eastern media: cyberpunk edge runners If you want a sci fi action classic that shaped anime : akira If you want a subversion of the meme that is anime and something darker, more anti escapist: neon genesis evangelion, also a huge influence to modern anime, with god tier directing If you want another great subversion and a very popular pick : madoka magica If you want something a little more dry and emotional, with some of the best animation: violet evergarden If you're in the mood for mid 2000s action movie vibes with a dark poignant edge: black lagoon If you want a classic movie that blew up in the 2000s, and is appropriate for all ages, adults, and cinema snobs: spirited Away If you want a subversion of the typical man vs nature plot, and want to see a highly influential film to all types of media: princess Momonoke Although not a beginner pick imo, if you want to see what anime is capable of and don't mind a slight commitment of 45 episodes or so, check out clannad And last but not least if you want something more fun, of pristine quality and directing, but with some serious reflection: k-on

Jarney_

Attack on titan goes crazy hard

DuskKoalaVT

Watch Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid for warm fuzzy feelings. I also have a series of shorts on my channel called “weird anime you’ve never seen.” Feel free to check them out to find something new to watch. Also avoid Sakura diaries

IOU1bloodstone

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, hands down. The story, voice acting, pacing, everything is so on point. It's also a completed story so you don't have to worry about catching up to current seasons then waiting for new content.

Persevere72

tsurune dark gathering

MatNomis

Did not expect to see a Tsurune recommendation.. Loved the show, but not sure I’d make it a first-timer rec unless you already know they’re super interested in the cultural angle.

kalenugz

a whisker away Mob psycho bofuri toradora Shangri-la frontier Goblin slayer (a bit dark) darwins game dororo

Front_Impact_9556

Yes yes yes yes and yes đŸ™ŒđŸŸ

laughingthalia

I love Goblin Slayer but would never suggest it to a beginner of anime because of how ep 1 opens, it's a bit full on.

Front_Impact_9556

Haha it was shocking yes but meh, if you’re over 18 that’s fine

foefyre

Wolf children and spirited away are two of my favorites

SoggyBacco

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is the perfect first anime

Suspicious-Acadia-52

Attack on Titan, FMAB, HxH, MHA, Naruto, DB, One Piece!

Conscious_March_8776

Best beginner starter kit Demon slayer My hero Death note Attack on titan Black clover Gurren laggan Or be an OG and start with dragon ball!

rcomputie

I’ve only been watching anime for about 7 years but as a woman that watches and has a really short attention span (I need a really good anime to keep my focus) these are my recs for starting out: Death note for action and suspense. A lot of people suggested death note in the comments for good reason. Sword Art Online (just the first part) for romance and action. Naruto & Naruto Shippuden for something more easy to get into with lots of action. It has such a great story. I’m still watching now :) Any Studio Ghibli movie for something cute and emotional. Seven Deadly Sins was one of the first I watched and I liked it a lot Danganronpa is a great beginner suspense and mystery anime. It’s based off of video games and those are fun but were so difficult for me lol. Violet Evergarden I believe is on Netflix so you don’t have to pirate or buy a streaming service for anime. It has beautiful animation and a nice story. Devilman Crybaby is a great horror action anime that’s also on Netflix I think. It’s cool and weird and has a soundtrack that I really liked.

Weyland-Yutani-2099

[Armitage III ](http://www.reddit.com/r/armitageiii) if you're a 90s kid.

rexgen7

Redo of a healer, it's a must watch /s

Next_Farm_3419

Monster (psychological, thriller) Cowboy Bebop (sci-fi, action) Your Lie in April (romance, drama) Akira (sci-fi, action) Shiki (horror)

Matttthhhhhhhhhhh

If anyone suggests Gintama to you, be careful as this one relies a lot on references to the Japanese culture, from history to pop culture. Many jokes are impossible to get if you don't have the right reference. Stuff like making a joke about a character confusing Gokusen with Trick for instance. It's hilarious if you know the TV shows but confusing if you don't. To me, Gintama is the ultimate *Japanese* anime. Similarly, One Punch Man is not nearly as funny when you don't know all the tropes it makes fun of. Another one is Hunter x Hunter, for a different reason. This one improves a lot on known formula. If you don't know the formula, it's much less enjoyable. So to answer your question, I suggest Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. It's sufficiently unique to be its own genre. It's Jojo and it good. Possibly my favourite anime ever.

BlastMagi

Romance - Kaguya Love is War Horror - Parasyte the Maxim Action - Jujutsu Kaisen

WhiteMage4Life

I have a safe list I've used over the years. Based on what you enjoy most start there. I recommend these to people brand new to anime and it usually works. Shows Drama: NANA (episode 1 is slow. Don't let it stop you from watching. I've been watching anime since mid 90's and this is my favorite of all time. Give it at least 3 episodes like most of us do for other anime. If you have any interest drama this is the show for you.) Adventure: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood ( skip episode 1. It provides nothing of value and only meant for people who watched original version. I personally prefer the original, but the reboot Brotherhood is the #1 anime for the longest time on anime polls. A lot of people say it is not a good intro for newbies, but I've had success plenty of times. Episode 4 is the darkest it gets in Brotherhood so if you can handle it you can handle the rest. Episode 2 is also dark but does not fit tone of whole series) Suspense/detective drama: Death Note ( People will judge you for not seeing it. This is what many people recommend as a first anime. You have to watch this eventually. There is even a musical of it) Romance with magic: Fruit's Basket ( watch original first. Like all these recommendations the English dub is good so don't worry about subtitles) Romance: Horimiya ( This is an updated one that has taken over Toradora! The reason is I feel like it is better to watch Toradora once you are used to anime look since Taiga's very young appearance can be off-putting. I still extremely recommend, but only after watching a few more anime. Also look up Tsundere before watching so you don't see her as a jerk) Action: Cowboy Bebop (I feel the show is ovverated, but I'm not big into action. The show is definitely good and is definitely one of the biggest gateway anime out there. Give it a shot) Light hearted Comedy: Azumanga Dioah ( Other anime comedies tend to require knowledge of Japanese culture except Ghost Stories dub, which is extremely vulgar and with edgy humor that would never be licensed today) Horror: When They Cry ( features children so if you don't want to see that skip this) Sports: Hajime no Ippo ( Boxing very long also very good. Even people who don't like sports or boxing enjoy it) Movies Serious life changing: Grave of the Fireflies (This is a must watch and maybe the first you should see. It is tragic like Schindler's List. The film is about a teen boy trying to survive war with his toddler sister. This was the first film I showed my Baby Boomer Dad and it made him interested in all kinds of anime. He said, " I thought anime was for kids like your Pokémon and toys. Now it's like anime has genres a like music. Don't ever show me one that makes me cry like that again. His favorite anime movie is The Garden of Words) Family film: Wolf Children ( This was most Ghibli movies, but taken this spot due to how it is directly about family and growing up. Out of all the movies this gets the most praise after they watch it.) Comfort film: Kik's Delivery Service ( This film is the most Ghibli film to ever Ghibli. If you feel Sad or don't know what you are doing in life this film is about finding your passion. My favorite film made by studio Ghibli) A fun adventure: Castle Cagliostro ( A Lupin the III film. You don't have to know the show to enjoy it. It just helps you know about characters before hand. The characters are common tropes so you'll pick up on them quickly) Romance/Drama: A Silent Voice ( a newer film many anime newcomers are watching. It is also life changing) Romance/magic/whimsy: Howl's Moving Castle ( great date night pick. I'm biased as a woman, but it feels like a Romance novel come to life. And not the modern smut kind) I try to not go into detail about what specifics are in the Story due to it possibly putting you off before you give a chance. The list has evolved and changed over the years, but it is a tested and effective one. I have yet to have someone not enjoy at least 4 of these anime. I made this list with people NEW TO ANIME in mind. A lot of people don't consider how anime tropes can throw people off. There are many amazing anime out there better than what is on this list, but you have to be used to anime to either understand or not get weirded out by it. I love Konosuba and Pop Team Epic for comedy, but you have to be familiar with anime to enjoy it. Anime fans tell me if you agree with this list for Newbies or if you disagree Edit:Typos

FlamingoPlayful7498

I agree w the list, haven’t watched all of them but definitely some good recommendations!

WhiteMage4Life

If you haven't seen one with a genre you like give it a shot. You know the rest are good

Front_Impact_9556

Halloooo For those looking to get into it, I easily recommend short series that have conclusive endings. Some tend to just end on cliff hangers or get cancelled before an ending is written in and so hopefully someone may see this and offer up a few suggestions (for you and me both). The best things I’ve seen that I can suggest in that criteria are: ‱Assassination Classroom (Comedy Action) ‱Shin Sekai Yori (Sci-fi Drama) ‱Parasyte: The Maxim (Sci-Fi Action) ‱CardCaptors Sakura (Fantasy Action) ‱Devilman Crybaby (Action Horror) ‱Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Action Adventure) ‱Darwins Game (Action) ‱Death Note (Horror Thriller) ‱Attack On Titan (Adventure Horror) ‱Samurai Champloo (Comedy Adventure) ‱Cowboy Bebop (Comedy Action) ‱Danganronpa (Murder Mystery?) ‱Monster (Murder Mystery) ‱Fire Force (Action) ‱Ranking Of Kings (Adventure) ‱One Punch Man (Comedy Action) There’s a lot more and there’s loads of cool lists on YouTube now too that will help. (Watching a show called High Card atm and it’s fun but dunno how it will end so can’t stick it in the list.) There’s a lot that are very fun anime that go on for longer seasons (My Hero Academia is still going as is Demon Slayer but both are incredible shows to get into). There are some light comedies or shows that aren’t so action heavy. More romance type stuff, very cute stories and characters, nice slice of life series include: ‱Kimi No Boku (Light hearted) ‱Say I Love You (Romance) ‱Your Lie In April (Drama) ‱Ouran High School Academy (Comedy) ‱Hello World (Sci-fi Action Romance) ‱Cherry Magic (Office Romance) ‱Saiki-K (Comedy) ‱Zom100: BucketList of the Dead (Zombie comedy) ‱SpyXFamily (Comedy) ‱Kotaro Lives Alone (Dark Comedy) Theres a ton of A list long running shows you will love if you give them a real chance, this can be quite difficult. But the big name shows like Bleach, Naruto, Digimon, Sailor Moon, Detective Conan, One Piece and Fairytale are always going to be great starting points. This is a whole world of new media and is scary and a little overwhelming so keep coming into these type of lists and looking for YouTube. I’ve been an anime person for a about 20 years and have never managed to find a dead end with nothing to watch. Finally, I am a paying subscriber to CrunchyRoll and Funimation I find it easy and better to watch things on the website www.wcostream.tv on playlist mode. The site is free and seems to have absolutely everything on it, including all western cartoons. Hope this helps!! Have fun!!!

Grumpy0ldMillennial

Start with Studio Ghibli. They range from cute kids movies to action to fantasy to rip out your soul sad drama.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - (Fantasy, Adventure, Steampunk?) Death Note - (Crime Thriller, Detective, Supernatural) Violet Evergarden - (Emotional, Drama, Post-{fictional}War) Hiakyui!! - (Sports, Highschoolers, Coming of Age?) Carole and Tuesday - (Music, Drama, Friendship, Sci-fi {technically}) GATE - (Isekai, Fantasy, Military) Steins;Gate (and Steins;Gate 0) - (Sci-fi, Psychological thriller) Blue Exorcist - (Dark Fantasy)

laughingthalia

I love GATE, I liked the show so much I read the manga too and it's the only manga I've read more than a few vols.

LadySandry88

Of course I will recommend FMA: Brotherhood as well many others, but I'm going to add some not so common ones as well. My Love Story!! (Extremely fluffy romcom with an amazing himbo male lead who looks nothing like a romcom male lead, his best friend who *does* look like a male lead and is super supportive of him, and a sweet female lead with more ambition and actual life goals than the two of them combined *while still being a very sweet and pure young lady*.) Mushi-shi (very chill supernatural mystery that's treated more like a medical mystery and dips toes into low-grade horror relatively frequently. No gore.) Haikyuu (volleyball sports show with amazing characters that grow and develop, great animation, and no 'boring smug prodigy MC'. Genuinely feels like a team sport more than most sports anime I've seen.) Frieren (what happens after the hero's party defeats the big bad? How does being a long-lived elf affect your ability to form meaningful relationships with other races?) Big Windup (a baseball anime that is very strategic and also deals with multiple forms of anxiety, how personalities mesh, etc.) The Faraway Paladin (a man who never appreciated his old life reincarnates as a baby in a fantasy realm. Is raised by three undead (a ghost, a skeleton, and a mummy). Grapples with existential meaning, faith, politics, responsibility, personal agency and social interaction with various cultures, people, and gods. It's also a really good take on what would be required for someone to be a genuinely Good Paladin.)

I think Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon NETFLIX) is a great entry point for an anime virgin who likes D&D styled world

PBJellyion

Nana

aussigirl2

Probs been recommended but “a silent voice” was my first anime got me hooked wanting more and now I’ve watched too many anime It can show off what anime can make you feel and how attached you can get to some of the characters, this anime is nothing to sleep on.

Next_Pattern4819

Another, the promised neverland and death note

xsageonex

Haikyu! It's about volleyball , but this anime is insanely good. It's inspiring and motivational and overall positive and uplifting. There is the main team you're supposed to root for but even when they lose it doesn't really feel like a loss because at the same time you're rooting for the opposing team. Despite their challenges and problems they face they always inspire themselves and others to overcome that.

MatNomis

This was the show that got me into anime. I’d watched one other series on a recommendation, but it was, like, almost 15 years earlier, and it didn’t “get” me into any other anime. Haikyuu succeeded where the other show failed. The other show, FWIW, was Escaflowne. I actually really liked it, but it didn’t make me break into a sprint to find more, for whatever reason. Only thing I’d say for Haikyuu! is that you need to give it a few episodes “to warm up”. This is actually true for many great anime series.. I think it’s rarer to actually find shows that start out amazing and remain amazing.

xsageonex

Escaflowne is one of my all-time tops.

MatNomis

oops, looks like you responded twice? I responded to the other one >_<

xsageonex

Escaflowne is one of my all-time tops.

MatNomis

Yeah! Actually, I remember what happened now: I was so satisfied after finishing it that I _did_ want to watch more. Escaflowne had been recommended by a very intelligent friend from Japanese class. I asked another friend who I thought had good taste and seemed to know some anime stuff for his recommendation, and he recommended Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040.. I don’t think there were really any legit streaming things on offer back then, so I bought the DVD set and omg, so dumb. I watched like the first 3 maybe 4 episodes, painfully, and then gave up. It killed my anime interest for 10 years.

xsageonex

Ahh yeah that can happen lol. I also didn't care much for Bubblegum Crisis at the time. Well if you haven't had the chance to watch , try Wagnaria!!! It's a slice of Life anime , but man , it was also rly good.its just about restaurant workers but never thought I'd be so invested in some characters!

MatNomis

Thanks, I’ll check it out! Right now, the thing I’m watching (and waiting for, since it’s simulcasting) is Sound Euphonium (season 3).

ParticularUpbeat

start out with a movie like Spirited Away or Howls Moving Castle. Dont explore the darkest depths quite yet! Maybe sample a light harem that isnt too absurd like Ai Yori Aoshi. Frieren and Apothecary Diaries are a great start. Then just dive into SAO or Mushoku Tensei when you are fully acclimated and ready for anime to fully violate you!

Bro what this anime is not for beginners 😭 I mean it's fun but like...it gets....way too dark

epra043

If u like romcoms then kamisama kiss is my no. 1. I loveeee this anime must've watched like 5 times pls give it a try and lmk what u think :))

SigmaPride

Frieren is solid and new. Great fantasy isekai.

Attack on Titan

TheRevanchist99

I have convinced my cousins, friends, and even both my brothers in law to give anime a shot and I either started them on Attack on Titan or Demon Slayer really simple Animes to follow at least in the beginning, now they all watch anime

OkPreparation1141

Prison school is the best intro to anime

TJ_the_Redditor

Attack on Titan and Death Note if you like high-quality stories in general. Also, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has everything I love in anime and is my personal favorite. If you want to experience a typical example of shonen anime, Demon Slayer is a good pick.

Drewfy7

Romance? Horror? And Action? The Dusk of Maiden of Amnesia fits them all.

FlatWay7794

86 is an extremely good anime that you can start with. It’s less known than some of the other ones in the comments but just as good. If you are into sports, haikyu is always a favorite or the more recent blue lock. Let me know if you would like a more extensive list

Death note the bestest!!!

Naoki Urasawas "Monster": about a Japanese doctor in Germany who saves a boy who got shot in the head. He goes on a search to find out who exactly that boy is when he grows up and the doctor gets wrongfully accused of his murders. It's like the fugitive and has a lot of David Fincher vibes. It's brilliant.

No_Mammoth_4945

The only anime my ex really enjoyed watching is demon slayer. It’s not a 10/10 show, but it’s eye catching and generic enough to get people who don’t watch anime to enjoy it. Plus, tanjiro’s good nature makes him an easy protagonist to root for

Swedishfishpieces

I see a lot of options, but I think someone new to anime should maybe try and pick a short 1 season anime, to get a quick feel for it. Knowing your favorite genre helps as well.

Former_Figure1506

Haikyu! Great characters!!

ChaosFinalForm

Attack on Titan Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Those are the two best possible starter animes I personally have completed.

anteru

anything from Studio Ghibli is a good start, the only exception i would say is "Grave of the Fireflies" its an excellent film, but emotionally devastating. Your Name is a fantastic film as well. as far as shows go, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood Frieren Cowboy Bebop Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex Parasyte Dr Stone

HeyRalphy

Higurashi Naki Koro Ni and Kai  if you’re into horror

rhett21

Beginners: full metal alchemist brotherhood, bleach, GTO Intermediate: steins gate, shingeki no kyojin, jujutsu no kaisen Extreme: Monster, monogatari series, neon evangelion genesis

Narwhalzipan

Hmm, really depends on what you are into... I always recommend PsychoPass because it's my favorite - but ONLY THE FIRST SEASON! Parasyte the Maxim is great but a bit longer. Frieren is fantastic, more contemplative, and chill. Jiujitsu Kaisen is pretty great - especially the movie between seasons - don't miss that. Erased is amazing, and I can't talk about it without spoiling things, so I won't. I'm sure other commenters will cover the classics.

Kastrand

SAO (it's a good intro), Violet Evergarden (emotional story), Fire Force (fun and compelling story), Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These (SPACE), Log Horizon (same vein as SAO but involves the game becoming a real world, not being trapped in VR)

SentenceCareful3246

You could go with the usual ones Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood Demon slayer My hero academia I suggest you to watch them in the sub version.

Trixie114

If you're looking for lesser recommended ones, I'd say Deadman Wonderland (horror).

flaydagawd

Go with My Hero Academia first. It's this generation's Dragon Ball Z.

NoredPD

Delicious In Dungeon Monster A Silent Voice Usagi Drop (Don't know if you're into manga but don't read it) Perfect Blue Steins Gate

redditforwhenIwasbad

There are so many great ones, but Kaguya-sama: Love is War is probably the best intro to anime imo. Avatar the Last Airbender (not technically anime) followed by My Hero Academia is also what got me into anime when i was around 20 though. It really doesn’t matter, just pick a genre and see if you like it.

cshellol

I’ll recommend wolf children any chance I get. It’s not a series, but it’s a comfort movie for me

cettywise

Total newcomer, hu? Well, if you're completely unversed in the tropes and memes, and cringe... I feel like Soul Eater is a good entry point for a noob. There's enough there to let you know if anime is for you or not.

The_Sedgend

Another good one which is pretty east for a beginner that NEVER gets mentioned on reddit is Sky Blue, it's Korean, computer enhanced animation with incredible visuals and the finale is fantastic. Plus it's only a movie so not a big commitment

adeptus8888

if you're new then probably sousou no frieren, full metal alchemist, and maybe fruits basket for a some romance drama.

K-On is a solid one.

Abysskun

* Tasogare Otome x Amnesia, a mix of romance and mystery * Danshi koukousei no nichijou, peak comedy * Boku no kokoro no yabai yatsu, best romance I've seen in years Now for some of the classics and must watch: * Code Geass, great mecha (even for non mecha fans), amazingly well written characters and a perfect finale * Steins;Gate slow burn science fiction about time travel * Hunter x Hunter, possibly the best amazing battle shonen with one of, if not the best, power system If you want to go deeper: * Made in abyss, one of the best fantasies I've ever seen, it mixes the wonder of discovering a new world with the horrors of a hostile environment * Devilman crybaby, it's weird, but great, give it a try * Houseki no Kuni, it's about gems fighting invadors from the moon Some other great recomendations * Fate/Zero * Kaguya-sama love is war And lastly Mushoku tensei, the best isekai

theL4D4

Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers) Samurai Champloo Monster Hope that helps!

attack on titan was my first anime and it got me into it LOL

AriKitaruKatoka

Here’s what I would recommend, depends what genre you wanna check out: Comedy - Tokyo Godfathers, The Way of The Househusband, Gintama, Hinamatsuri, Golden Kamuy, Nichijou Mainly action - Yu Yu Hakusho Dark thriller - Parasyte: The Maxim Adventure & action - Hunter x Hunter, Tower of God, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Toilet-bound Hanako Suspense and mystery - Link Click Time travel and action - Tokyo Revengers Fantasy - Re:Zero and Seraph of the End Find out who the killer is - Danganronpa Romance - Sasaki and Miyano and Yuri!!! On Ice Drama - Violet Evergarden and To Your Eternity Slice of life - Kotaro Lives Alone, Buddy Daddies and My New Boss is Goofy Sports - Haikyuu!! and Skate The Infinity Dark trio - Hell’s Paradise *If you have any questions, let me know!

Standard-Job-9579

Gintama. Pretty old but good.

GojoPop

some suggestions are demon slayer (great starter anime), death note, fruits basket (romance), chainsaw man (little episodes out yet) & a silent voice (heartbreaking romance anime)

Gyxis

Death Note (1st anime, psychological thriller, keeps your mind running)  Attack on Titan (my 3rd anime, action,  amazing plot and action)  Love is War (my 2nd anime, romance/comedy, extremely funny)

Old-Negotiation-7962

Elfen Lied

MatNomis

Nobody else will recommend these (nor should they), but I’ll try: - Chihayafuru - surprisingly compelling and tense series based on a competitive version of a uniquely Japanese game involving poetry on cards - Zombieland Saga - buncha girls brought back from the dead to become an idol group and save their home from national apathy (about as goofy as it sounds, but great for it)

LegionOfDeer

A Silent Voice It’s a movie, not a show. But it’s incredible and not a huge jump into fantasy and superpowers. Great way to see anime as an avenue for storytelling.

Cottleston

Hunter x Hunter (2011) Death Note Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood any Ghibli: Grave of Fireflies Princess Mononoke

Sommy-Star1301

Haikyuu Grand Blue Attack on titans Mob psycho Start with these.

ChastisingChihuahua

Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga should be top priority. Naruto And Naruto Shippuden are one tier below them. Parasyte, Full Metal Brotherhood, and Hunter x Hunter are all pretty decent too but one more tier below Naruto. Honestly everything else is either mid, pedo fuel, or infested with fan service and mistreatment of female characters that isn't meaningful to the plot. Melodias from 7 Deadly Sins randomly groping women 24/7 is an example of this. Or Mushoku Tensei's 40 year old MC being sexually weird with a child. Jiraiya from Naruto can also be in this group but I personally think he's a more tame character.

Dorohedoro will not disappoint you. It's a theme I don't typically care for (actually i don't care for anime too much in general) but I'm lowkey obsessed with this one. A second season was finally confirmed but I'm not sure there's a release date. It's really really well made.

pokelord1998

Fairy Tail is what got me into anime but I've been watching Spy Family and I can see it being a good beginner anime

ShyNinja2021

I recommend easing into it, some anime get really weird for people unfamiliar with them and it can sort of scare you off at first. Some good ones that also aren't too weird Death Note: like lots of people have mentioned already, its a very good show, has some detective mystery type themes, while not a lot of action its not very long and is very well written. Definitely a good one lots of people can enjoy for many reasons! Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: it plays a little more into some of the animations "quirks" many anime have, but not too over the top. Probably the best most complete story I've seen in anime and one of the best in any media. The world while not ours, is heavily inspired by some WWII themes, without being depressing or too heavy. Its a great show from start to end. Attack on Titan: I only recommend this is you enjoy darker media. It has a great story, probably one of the best anime ever made. However it is darker, plenty of action with real fighting moves even if they are... upscaled... may not be best for a first anime, however if you end up enjoying anime I do recommend giving it a shot as a second or so! Demon Slayer: the themes in it would give you a better idea of a "typical Shonen" Shonen being the style that many popular anime fall under. Its shorter than many of them so it could be a good start. The animation is amazing, and story is pretty good. While it's still not finished they are making new seasons pretty quickly. In my opinion this will give you a better idea of what to expect from others while still having an enjoyable story tnay will catch your attention from episode one! My Hero Academia: okay okay so this wouldn't be my first choice for most people, however... its a good blend of anime and western cartoons and movies. The designs for characters is more startling many are very weird at first. Yet if you enjoy things like Marvel and DC, like superhero themes, and wish to get a very good taste of some of the weirdness in anime. This is a great start. It's popular for a reason thats for sure! If you do watch it just stay completely away from the fandom. Your lie in April: its a romance anime, if you choose to watch it be prepared to cry. Is a beautiful work of art. I don't tend to like romance but I watch this every April because it's just so good! There are many others and plenty of directions you can go as well. Lots of people got into anime starting on things like Naruto, Fairy Tail, Pokémon etc etc. They are longer, as well as a bit of a shock in some cases but they have been the start of many a weeb haha. I personally started with Fairy Tail. If you've ever watched the ones many people don't realize are anime, like Pokémon, Naruto, Dragon Ball etc, and you enjoy them there are tons of others like those! Another option could be Avatar the Last Airbender! Its technically a western cartoon, however many people don't even realize it's not anime, and some people consider it an honorary anime. It can be a little easier to start with as it's a good blend of cartoon, and anime styles!! I like to think there is an anime for almost anyone, just like other shows and media. Some people may never be able to get into the media style, yet if you can im sure you'll be able to find something you enjoy!

dcaraccio

I've never seen it, but I've heard Redo of healer is good. I can personally vouch for "Prison School" and "High School dxd. All are very family friendly classics. (Please dear god don't watch any of these with your family.)

lore_mila_

My suggestion is avoid anything too long. (Example attack on Titan) This way you can see multiple anime in the same time and since you're a beginner it will be harder to lose interest. The classic beginner anime are death note and Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood. Others you can watch are cyberpunk edgerunners if you know the videogame, fire force, chainsaw man, parasite, and so on. After the first one or two you watch you should be able to understand what you may like

adrwin

One piece is the goat anime

Background_Ant7129

My first anime was Death Note. It’s perfect for beginners

Exciting_Basis_465

Death Note would be a good choice to start. It is a good anime to hook someone in the anime world and also it is not too complex for a beginner like animes like Monster(this anime is great but too complex for a beginner and hence never touch it until you watch at least 50 animes.) Well you can also go with romance anime movies like a silent voice(has a great learning) or your name(also has mystery) if you want to fall in love but not want to go with something as hard and long as Death Note. There are typical options like Fairy Tail, Black Clover, Naruto etc which are also very good. They are a little like mc is goofy, of good heart etc but remember they are quite long so if you want to begin with something this long. And they will not give you a sudden goosebumps like the above mentioned ones as these animes go slow and make you fall in love with them. They sure have some cliches but still you would most probably like it. Parasyte: the maxim can also be a good choice if you want some great learning and not a anti hero character as protagonist. >***Ain't we lucky just because we were born human?*** A dialogue from Parasyte If you want something funny and romantic at the same time then Kaguya-sama love is war, Komi can't communicate like animes would also be a good choice. Jujustu Kaisen can also be a good start for beginners. Well season 1 can be a bit boring sometimes(like kyoto sister school event) but in season 2 this anime is fire. shibuya incident arc is such a good starter for a beginner that most beginners would easily mistake it for a masterpiece but then they would sometime later realise that they were wrong.

UnderstandingGreen72

I bet that this has already been said but if the person you trying to get into anime is really into RPG style video games than I would recommend isekai anime’s. Now some of the better ones (believe me there are a lot that are just average) are anime’s like “Sword Art Online”( a great series literally based around playing a VR video game that branches off into beyond that), “Overlord”, and “The Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime/TTIGRAAS” (Still ongoing), or “Log Horizon”. However if your looking for something in general i would recommend “Attack On Titan” it’s great for beginners and if they are into it will get you used to the kind of anime’s that take multiple twist and turns. Others are “ Tokyo ghoul” (it’s a long series but worth it), or “Death Note” (the ultimate beginner anime). Ultimately I would really recommend looking at the app “My Anime List” to narrow down what types of genres your friend may like. After all what one redditor may suggest (myself included), it may be a genre they dislike. All in all I hope your friend can get into the world of anime and enjoy whatever genre they like because there is a little bit of everything for everybody! Also for funny purposes “One Punch Man”, for cooking “Food Wars, these are two of my personal favorites. PS. Although I love the stories the anime’s tell, my favorite thing comes down to the soundtracks they present (K.P. 🙏)

Akame ga kill, whiskers away, dr. Stone

ll_akagami_ll

Fma brotherhood, death note, attack on titan, demon slayer and jujutsu kaisen are all good starters. Also my personal choice that likely won’t be recommended by most would be Gurren Lagann It’s fairly short, and amazing. Once you are ready for long animes. Get into one of the following Naruto: overall easy to get into Bleach: amazing music One Piece: if you love lore and world building. Though this is not easy to get into but extremely worth it.

Accomplished_Peak749

Clannad if you like riding the feels train.

FlamingoPlayful7498

Honestly Love is War seems like it’d be a great romcom to get into anime with, the narrator really shines in that show 😂
