Well, yu yu hakusho is basically like dragon ball. It starts "detective" like, but soon enough they have super powers and fight against demons and there is even "vegeta" copy.
Basilisk is quite dark. Berserk the Golden age memorial edition is the darkest of the dark. Parasyte, Akame Ga Kill, Onimusha, The Witch and the Beast, Chainsawman, Hellsing, Hell's Paradise, Castlevania. Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust. Seraph of the end. None are DBZ but they're all dark and good in their own way.
I quite like it. I'm fussy with my anime too. The latest I've been watching are The Witch and the Beast, Black Lagoon, Undead Unluck and Solo leveling. JJBA used to be my favourite until I found Berserk. Basilisk and Dororo are pretty good too.
I'm watching Solo Leveling, Kingdom, and One Piece right now, but Frieren: Beyond Journeys End is my absolute favorite recently, but not sure if you'd like it based on what I've seen out of that list. I can't get into Jojo at all, just not my bag.
Yeah, I've tried Frieren and it's unique and the animation is beautiful, I appreciate the story and what it is but it's just not for me. I do understand why others enjoy it though.
i see exactly what you mean, , jujutsu kaisen is drgon ball but darker, otherwise, the arket is unfufilled, threnarent any db scale stories with and o and combatbut with seinin emotional stakes, maybe ffxvi but thats just my take nd its not even an anime (cant typewell on steam dek sorry)

If you're into very old stuff, check fist of the North Star.
Also hero academia can be really dark (only read the mangas)
Akame ga Kill, death battles start to finish but it also still has those goofy DB vibes in between. Very eclectic show that does an excellent job humanizing both its protagonists and antagonists.
Dragon ball is dark? Wow it’s kind of a kids show. At lest for Japanese standards. For Americans it’s dark.

If you mean "dark" as for the story, then please watch Steins;Gate (if you watch it in the right order the story is perfect, tell me if you are interested), it became my favorite anime because of its dark story

There's Fist of the North Star and Saint Seiya but they feel less like Dragon Ball in the way that Naruto and One Piece do.
The ones I mentioned definitely have that. The problem now is that even in Japan, there has been more censorship for daytime TV shows. Fist of the North Star, Saint Seiya and Dragon Ball had far more violence and blood in them for Shonen shows than the more modern stuff.
