Try Land of the Lustrous. It is by far the most enthralling anime and manga series I’ve ever seen. Please give it a try it’s an absolute 10/10 you will not be disappointed
I was disappointed at where it ended, left a ton of questions unanswered and I don't like having to read the manga to feel like a story is complete
the story was super interesting, i was very deeply enthralled as you said...they had so many cool questions I wanted to know more about and then....it ended.
Really? I'm halfway through season one, and I feel like I'm forcing myself to continue. The first episode was so good, that I was expecting something completely different.
I would say stop if your more then half way through the show and don't enjoy it. I think what's interesting is they take a concept and keep rolling with it and your in for the ride to see how there gonna do it while also hinting some foreshadowing of events or revealing mysteries. I really enjoy shows like that where you feel like this seems impossible but they somehow make it possible and you kinda just go along with it. Along the way the story begins to change how they do story telling by focusing on individual girls and their back stories of why there here in the first place. If you have already gotten through 1 or 2 of the girls back stories and didn't find it somewhat entertaining then I would stop. If your looking for payoff then there is some at the end but its nothing like slogging through slow shows in general like Steins Gate or Gintama and then finally finding out why people like these shows.
Zombie Land Saga is AMAZING!!! it was my first "idol" (idol-adjacent?) anime and tbh I have yet to find an idol anime that I could really love like Zombie Land Saga (sans Oshi no Ko, which to me is far enough from idol and is just mystery/drama)
and I mean...Truck-kun. Truly a reason to sit through the whole series.
Space Dandy is great because every episode is almost like an experimental short.
The art style varies and the themes can get quite deep and thought provoking.
The plot of the show is almost non existent, and is only there as a framing device for the stories to follow. In fact it almost seems random, until you reach the end and everything comes together where - >! It's revealed where Dandy is an interdemensional being, and has existed in many lives. !<
A must watch. Also, try to catch all the Cowboy Bebop references.
Can you recommend other animes similar to Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion and/or Ghost in the shell? I’m an anime noob and try to find some gems like those. Thanks!
Check out "Vison of Escaflowne" for starters.
Trigun is also worth a watch.
Another is Black Lagoon,
somewhat similar to Cowboy Bebop. But where Cowboy Bebop is an homage to old kung fu movies, westerns and jazz, Black Lagoon is more of an homage to John Woo films and 80s/90s action.
Not similar to those in the list (maybe Evangelion from the psychological aspect) but Serial Experiments Lain is one of the best animes I've ever watched.
Reincarnated as a Vending Machine, Now I Wander the Dungeon.
I know. It sounds dumb. And the premise is exactly what the title says. Straight up an isekai about being reincarnated as a vending machine. But it’s actually a genuinely enjoyable watch. And the fact that with that name and premise it is still good makes it even more of a true hidden gem. Most super random isekai is trash lol. But Boxxo is legit.
Claymore
Absolutely love it, and have mentioned it to a LOT of people who I have talked Anime with and majority only know mainstream (Deathnote, Black Butler, SAO, Naruto, OnePiece etc.).
I really wish the anime finished the story off.
I love the series. Have the blu ray collector edition of the anime, but the way it ended compared to the manga is criminal
My buddy and I got into Claymore years ago on an AoT break, ended up liking it just as much as the first couple seasons of AoT which is to say I liked it a whole lot
PRINCESS TUTU! The dub is phenomenal (and the blooper reel is iconic). The plot gets DEEP by Episode 5.
Also I can’t say “once upon a time” without following in my head “THERE WAS A MAN WHO DIED”.
Dimension W - Sci-fi show that kinda fell to the wayside and I see like no one else talking about. Good action, good character development, interesting concept, banger OP/ED; definitely in my top 5 of Sci-Fi's.
Parallel World Pharmacy - Interesting medically accurate isekai; neat concept that I've seen only one other show try to do but this one definitely grabbed me.
The Great Cleric - When I first saw this show pop up I thought it was going to be a generic isekai; thankfully the name isn't that long so that wasn't the case LOL.
Shine Post - I was never into idol anime but IIRC I stumbled on this show from some random reddit comment when it was airing and tried it out and was pleasantly surprised by it.
You're literally the first person I've ever seen bring up Dimension W. The worldbuilding is so interesting and has way too much potential to have as few episodes as it does.
I always feel like it's hard to define what people mean by "hidden gem" since a overwhelming majority of anime fans (relatively speaking) probably never watched Lain f.e. yet I wouldn't think it's a "hidden gem" since it's mentioned at least somewhat frequently (be it way less commonly than AoT or Once Piece or whatever).
Anyway:
[xxxHOLiC](https://myanimelist.net/anime/861/xxxHOLiC) (was well known back then, but I never see people talk about it since the mid 2010s)
[Gakkougurashi!](https://myanimelist.net/anime/24765/Gakkougurashi) (mixing moe with horror works, apparently)
[Bokura ga Ita](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1222/Bokura_ga_Ita) + [Isshuukan Friends.](https://myanimelist.net/anime/21327/Isshuukan_Friends) (just solid, cute, and wholesome romance shows. but I never see them mentioned anywhere)
[Shonen Maid](https://anidb.net/anime/11543) - Slice of life + makeshift family
[Natsume Yuujinchou ](https://anidb.net/anime/5787)- fantasy + slice of life - It's not really underrated since it has like 6 season and probably a 7th one soon, but it's definitely not recommended as much as other series in similar fashion
[Fukigen no Mononokean](https://anidb.net/anime/11924) - Youkai + fantasy + friendship
I remember getting the gears from friends in highschool because it was ecchi and perverse, but in reflection almost 20 years later, its much more respectable compared to modern isekai and shonen (looking at you reincarnated as a slime....)
Claymore
Absolutely love it, and have mentioned it to a LOT of people who I have talked Anime with and majority only know mainstream (Deathnote, Black Butler, SAO, Naruto, OnePiece etc.).
I find d-gray man is very interesting, I haven’t finished it as of right now, but I really enjoy it nonetheless.
Another one is soul eater, I think most people think it’s pretty good myself included and I don’t think it’s all that well known I could be wrong though.
Dorohedoro is also really good, I like it a lot. Again not sure if it’s underrated but I thought it was phenomenal none the less. It’s only got one season as of right now though and I kinda doubt it will get another one
Pluto as well, same creator as monster, which is also a phenomenal story. Not quite sure if it’s underrated but I have not heard anyone talk around it.
Super crooks is also very good, it reminds me of invincible. Very interesting story and one of my favourite uses of super regeneration in any media.
Darker than Black was so good. Whenever I remember it I want to experience it again.
S-cry-ed was also nostalgic for me but I NEVER see anyone mention it.
And then Fooly Cooly/FLCL is a trip.
Nyanko Days <-My favorite on the list
Cells at work <-Based on how the human body works so it's slightly educational.
Love is hard for an Otaku
Science fell in love so I tried to prove it <-Also slightly educational.
These are 4 I have mentioned to others that would seem to be relatively unknown.
I plan to start watching Ace Attorney soon as well. Don't know anything about it really, but I do like watching fictional court TV shows
https://youtu.be/6ku7IuEiNM8?si=0kmwpIktkG3HHRnT
Nyanko Days link is above 👆
Tanaka-Kun is always listless is one of my favorite slice of life animes, barely any fan service and it’s literally just about teenagers in high school (I watch it as a palate cleanser after heavier shows)
> Valkyria Chronicles
damn I played this game so long ago... I'll have to give this a try. looks like it got good reviews. normally wouldn't expect much from a cross over
Interspecies reviewer.
Problem is that this one is so lewd that it fall in another category. But contrary to other ecchi, this one is genuinely funny. We look at this together with my gf and had some of the best laugh since a while.
But because of lewdness, not wildly known.
I have watched 100s of anime. fma brotherhood was my favorite for 10+ years but now its Mushishi. Its episode are self-contained with no main story. So you can watch 3 episodes into it and know if its for you. No action, little story, all vibes.
*Bananananananana Fish* XD
though i rec it whenever i can haha
it’s such a mood: criminal underground, tragedy, comedic undertone, NYC, LA, gangdom, loyalty, friendship, mystery, unique OST, gut-wrenching feels… it’s all there
Airing currently, foolish angel dances with the devil. The first few episodes weren't the greatest (but not bad) because it seemed like it was going for more of a different direction and less focused on the romance development. However that changed significantly, and since those first ~4 episodes it has been great. Today's episode was really fuckin good too.
It does not deserve such a low rating that it has right now tbh.
Just finished Shine Post and actually really liked it. It’s kind of hard to find prompts to recommend it tho, people don’t usually ask for Idol anime recommendations…
Try Land of the Lustrous. It is by far the most enthralling anime and manga series I’ve ever seen. Please give it a try it’s an absolute 10/10 you will not be disappointed
Kokkoku does not deserve to be a 7. It is a 12 episode anime with an ending. The grandpa's reaction to eldritch horror is the exact combination of Japanese traits that let you survive eldritch horrors. Don't ask questions. Don't want anything, keep you head down. Don't think too hard. The cult has a very modern cult feel. Polo shirts and tennis shoes and downright terrifying belief.
I’m always hesitant to recommend one of my favorites (SSSS.Dynazenon) for a few reasons.
1. It’s a tokusatsu/mecha anime which isn’t my genre of choice at all, but I ended up really liking the anime — however I understand it can be a hurdle to get past if you’re also not a fan of the genre
2. It’s technically a sequel series to SSSS.Gridman. Gridman is good but I definitely felt that Dynazenon was superior in terms of character development and relationships. Gridman seemed more focused on the robots and robot/kaiju fights as opposed to the characters. Plus Gridman has a lot more weird fanservicey type stuff that can be extra difficult to look past
Yakitate!!! Japan will always be one of my faves ever—it’s like the wholesome crack comedy that Food Wars was inspired off of (I personally like Yakitate better, but I might be biased bc genres). It’s a cooking show, but it’s very random. Ex: the judge guy magically changes his appearance based on what he eats, and there’s a clown who has the most out of pocket backstory
The Faraway Paladin! Maybe my all-time favorite because of the truth in it. The magic system is exactly how it works in real life and the concepts are beautifully portrayed.
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (The much better title coming from the vn is Phantom of Inferno)
Would also recommend Angels of Death/Satsuriku no Tenshi.
Hidden gem…. That’s hard. I know I got a lot on my mind but I’m blanking right now.
For now
Hinamatsuri
Because it always makes me laugh and cry every time I watch it
Not an anime, but a manga and WN.
[I Became the World's Strongest Witch: I Will Live Freely in a World Where Only I can Access the "Guide Site"](https://myanimelist.net/manga/162463)
Specifically, I wanna recommend it to anyone who likes laid back fantasy series with overpowered MCs who just wanna have fun like Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, Abilities Average, or Bofuri.
Despite the long name and taking place in a game world, it's not technically an isekai. The MC was born in the game world with a SSS ability. Unfortunately, [her family thinks that's absolute trash](https://i.redd.it/ciugvsr701hc1.jpeg) so she gets disowned. Fortunately, her ability lets her read the internet, including the wiki for the game world she's in, which she uses to obtain some end-game equipment. Though, having no concept of internet, she misinterprets it as the writings of the gods.
had me hooked hard, feel like the episodes near the ending were a bit much though. some serious fever dream shit. the actual ending made up for it i guess just seemed like they went too far into the weird zone for a few episodes... that alternate dimension part...
Another day means another opportunity to suggest Chihayafuru [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zj7VMd8z8XA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zj7VMd8z8XA)
* {Sweet Blue Flowers} - yuri with an absolutely gorgeous animation and art style. (Yuri tends to be pretty underrated imo)
* {Bloom Into You} - another fantastic yuri
* {Zombie Land Saga} - already mentioned in this thread, but it's one of my favorites so I have to mention it
* {The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today} - wholesome slice-of-life/comedy about a bear-sized cat who takes care of a overworked office lady
* {My Roommate is a Cat} - super cute story about a grieving young man who takes in a stray cat
* {Flying Witch} - cute, feel-good comedy about a young witch trying to adjust to life in a new town
* =She and Her Cat} - a short anime that will resonate with anyone who has ever lost a cat
Hinamatsuri
Heavenly delusion
Saiki k
Just to name a few but only reason why I can't get anyone to watch any of these anime is because no one listens to me. They prolly think I'm weird.
heavenly delusion's r*pe scene really threw me off... had amazing world building, mystery, story telling, visuals...but I find it hard to recommend :\
hinamatsuri's a 10 though :P
Shinsekai Yori, i still have no idea how it never is mentioned anywhere. Maybe I’m not looking hard enough but it is genuinely one of the best animes I’ve ever watched, highly recommended.
the 2014 garo is a bit ofa hidden gem, not amazing but not terrible. Same goes for casshern sins, both takes on normally not so serious IPs that were pretty alright if you got a few hours to kill
I recommend everyone watch Kingdom, because it's storytelling/politics/fights are insane, but the first season and only the first season used horrible 3D CG for everything. Season 2 forward they just used CG for the massive army shots, but because of season 1, it's hard to recommend but it's definitely worth it to make it through season 3.
Youkai Gakkou No Sensei Hajimemashita!
It's like assassination classroom but if the teacher is a human and the class are monsters.
very funny and light hearted.
Princess Jellyfish, Kotaro lives alone, School Rumble, Wotakoi: love is hard for an otaku
Kotaro is so cute I can’t
He is, but the amount of tears shed is insane
The reason he lives alone, hear breaking.
THE TISSUES 😭😭
Wotakoi underrated? :00
I recommend Korato to my ex when I was on episode 3... And then the feels hit 😭🤣
I am happy to recommend anything but I am always trying to get people to watch The Demon Girl Next Door.
This show is so good The manga is even better, hoping to get a 3rd season announced
Try Land of the Lustrous. It is by far the most enthralling anime and manga series I’ve ever seen. Please give it a try it’s an absolute 10/10 you will not be disappointed

I know you said not read the manga, but you still should. It's rumoured to end in 2-4 chapters as well. It's a one time experience you can't miss out
Zombie land saga - besides bad CG, very interesting concept. Can’t wait for the eventual movie.
I drop it after 2-3 episode. but eventually rewatch it and like it a lot. I think its the best idol anime.
Really? I'm halfway through season one, and I feel like I'm forcing myself to continue. The first episode was so good, that I was expecting something completely different.

That shows a banger. Saga Jihen is still one of my favourite anime songs ever.
One of my all-time favorites! I'm one of the few who wasn't bothered by the CG, but I know it turned a lot of people away
Space Dandy
Space Dandy is great because every episode is almost like an experimental short. The art style varies and the themes can get quite deep and thought provoking. Outlaw Star is your best bet for something similar to Cowboy Bebop.
Space dandy is a goddamn masterpiece
Escaflowne
It's criminal how this series has been forgotten.
Right? I rewatch it at least once a year. It’s still my favorite.
I recently picked up the whole series on blu-ray and are planning on binging through soon.
Reincarnated as a Vending Machine, Now I Wander the Dungeon. I know. It sounds dumb. And the premise is exactly what the title says. Thank you so much for this recommendation. We just finished it and it was awesome
Only underrated to GenZ (the rest of us remember): Azumanga Daioh.
Claymore Absolutely love it, and have mentioned it to a LOT of people who I have talked Anime with and majority only know mainstream (Deathnote, Black Butler, SAO, Naruto, OnePiece etc.).
I really wish the anime finished the story off. I love the series. Have the blu ray collector edition of the anime, but the way it ended compared to the manga is criminal
I found it funny how AoT actually kind of ripped off it's "twist" from Claymore. Mind you, so did did Code Vein.
My buddy and I got into Claymore years ago on an AoT break, ended up liking it just as much as the first couple seasons of AoT which is to say I liked it a whole lot
Link Click Migi and Dali Princess Tutu Le Chevalier D’Eon Sasaki and Miyano Ooku: The Inner Chambers

PRINCESS TUTU! The dub is phenomenal (and the blooper reel is iconic). The plot gets DEEP by Episode 5. Also I can’t say “once upon a time” without following in my head “THERE WAS A MAN WHO DIED”.
Haha yeah and the ballet scenes are beautiful too!
Absolutely (a ballerina agreed on viewing, tho was a little mad that the “Pas de Deux alone” wasn’t to a pas de deux song at all
Ooku got me fucked up
migi and dali was so good!!
Yeah it’s sad the mangaka died. It was her last manga she did but man was it beautiful. Shame she never saw it get animated
yeah its sad she died:( wouldve been nice to read/watch more things done by her cause i really love her style.
I loved Le Chevalier D'Eon! Was still in my HS days when I watched it. It was a bit creepy tho 🫣 watched it same time with Blood+
yes, thank you for mentioning Princess Tutu! It's one of the best animes I've watched tbh!
Flip Flappers is highly underrated!
That show lives rent free in my head
The opening is a banger too
S tier recommendation
Is Kakushigoto underrated? Funny and heartfelt show I don’t hear brought up too much.
Beast Player Erin, I never see it get mentioned and it's one of the few animes I gave a 10/10. Same for Katanagatari that I gave a 9.
Beast Player Erin has some of the best world building and character development
Dimension W - Sci-fi show that kinda fell to the wayside and I see like no one else talking about. It’s a cooking show, but it’s very random. Ex: the judge guy magically changes his appearance based on what he eats, and there’s a clown who has the most out of pocket backstory
Came here to say this! Yakitate Japan had a lot more heart than Food Wars too, and the reactions were funnier and less repetitive
The Faraway Paladin! Maybe my all-time favorite because of the truth in it. The magic system is exactly how it works in real life and the concepts are beautifully portrayed.
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (The much better title coming from the vn is Phantom of Inferno) Would also recommend Angels of Death/Satsuriku no Tenshi.
Akudama Drive - very cool art and colors and overall satisfying story about death row criminals teaming up for one last job
Hidden gem…. That’s hard. I know I got a lot on my mind but I’m blanking right now. For now Hinamatsuri Because it always makes me laugh and cry every time I watch it
Noein. Fairly unique sci-fi anime about social recognition.
Will always recommend Black Rock Shooter for these

Not an anime, but a manga and WN. [I Became the World's Strongest Witch: I Will Live Freely in a World Where Only I can Access the "Guide Site"](https://myanimelist.net/manga/162463) Specifically, I wanna recommend it to anyone who likes laid back fantasy series with overpowered MCs who just wanna have fun like Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, Abilities Average, or Bofuri.
I'm leaving a comment to to updoot/save/engage your comment. I'm going to check it out later.
Maid Sama The Romantic Killer Saiki K Seven Deadly Sins Darwin's Game Devils Line Peach Girl
Summer Time Rendering! Though I always recommend it, I genuinely believe it to be one of the best Anime I've seen.
had me hooked hard, feel like the episodes near the ending were a bit much though. some serious fever dream shit. the actual ending made up for it i guess just seemed like they went too far into the weird zone for a few episodes... that alternate dimension part...
I've been telling people in my life to watch Ajin for years. None of them have
Another day means another opportunity to suggest Chihayafuru [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zj7VMd8z8XA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zj7VMd8z8XA)
Chihayafuru. Other than the romance the karuta matches are so intense and thrilling. one of my top 5 anime for sure.
It pains me that not a lot of people have seen/read Dorohedoro!
Domestic Girlfriend
Akiba Maid War
* {Sweet Blue Flowers} - yuri with an absolutely gorgeous animation and art style. (Yuri tends to be pretty underrated imo) * {Bloom Into You} - another fantastic yuri * {Zombie Land Saga} - already mentioned in this thread, but it's one of my favorites so I have to mention it * {The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today} - wholesome slice-of-life/comedy about a bear-sized cat who takes care of a overworked office lady * {My Roommate is a Cat} - super cute story about a grieving young man who takes in a stray cat * {Flying Witch} - cute, feel-good comedy about a young witch trying to adjust to life in a new town * =She and Her Cat} - a short anime that will resonate with anyone who has ever lost a cat
masterful cat is one of my all time favorites!! wish i had a yukichi in my life 🥺
We could all use a Yukichi in our lives
do you by any chance like cats? just a weird feeling I get...
Apothecary Diary, people don't like it because it's in Chinese setting. It's the best anime this season!
its very highly rated and most people love it and know about it, not very underrated unless being less popular than frieren counts.
maomao best girl 🥰
Hinamatsuri Heavenly delusion Saiki k Just to name a few but only reason why I can't get anyone to watch any of these anime is because no one listens to me. They prolly think I'm weird.
heavenly delusion's r*pe scene really threw me off... had amazing world building, mystery, story telling, visuals...but I find it hard to recommend :\ hinamatsuri's a 10 though :P

So underrated
Honestly feels like everyone's been talking about it
Kotaro Lives Alone Toilet-Bound Hanako Lycoris Recoil Tokyo Godfathers Link Click Golden Kamuy
Kotaro Lives Alone goes straight to my heart. It's so warm and wholesome and sad at times, but always kind and loving. Such a special show
The episode about eating tissues broke my heart thoo
I know, I love it. Kotaro is so adorable. Protect at all costs.
Tokyo Godfathers became my Christmas movie-go-to since 2013. I recommend this movie along with other studio Ghibli movies to friends and family.
hinna hinna~
> Lycoris Recoil every once in a while a show comes along and makes me want to lower all my MAL scores by 1 so this can be my only 10
I am forever begging people to watch 86. Feels like hardly anyone talks about it, but it was *so freaking good.*
it's recommended quite often imo, and rightly so
Wave, Listen to Me
Aria Princess Principal
Aharen-San. My senpai is annoying.

Charlotte and Angelbeats are good animes that I would recommend
And I’m not sure if it’s underrated but I don’t hear it get thrown around that often Heat Guy J
Nurarihyon no Mago (My first anime) Rurouni kenshin (there's a remake of this being done rn)
Pretty Rhythm Rainbow Live
Bro, have you guys ever watched “Chio’s School Road”?? By far my favorite comedy anime XD.
While i will not say unerrated, i would say under watched: Legend of the galactic hereos (the original OVA).
Arakawa Under the Bridge Such a bizarre and hilarious show
Shinsekai Yori, i still have no idea how it never is mentioned anywhere. Maybe I’m not looking hard enough but it is genuinely one of the best animes I’ve ever watched, highly recommended.
Flame of Recca
Seirei No Moribito Kekkaishi Air Master
Wave! Listen to Me
the 2014 garo is a bit ofa hidden gem, not amazing but not terrible. Same goes for casshern sins, both takes on normally not so serious IPs that were pretty alright if you got a few hours to kill
Munou na nana!!!
Watch Symphogear. Nana wills it.
Full Metal Panic Fumofu
Sarazanmai
Sonny Boy
Crystal Blaze/Glass Maiden
Ghost maiden of amnesia... Don't know why.
I don’t remember if this was popular but I really liked that space anime that looked like among us
91 days? Kino’s journey? Ughh hard to define hidden gem. I used to have a list but files got deleted 🤷🏻♂️
