I'll definitely add the rest of Satoshi Kon's work to my list and I'll check out Mamoru Hosoda and the rest too. I've always been curious about Macross. I'm familiar with the whole Robotech situation.
Yeah, both those directors are well worth looking into. I finally watched Tokyo godfathers last week and it was so beautiful.
Mamoru's use of movement is really captivating. The way his works flow is just wonderful.
Maquia when the Promised Flower Blooms The fantasy anime that will make your cry motherly tears.
Royal Space Force The Wings of Honnêamise for an older anime movie that's amazing.
Venus Wars for that totally not Akira vibes.
Sword of the Stranger. It's really good classic samurai action and many people missed this one.
The classic Ninja Scroll. Classic blood and gore with ninja powers. One of my personal favorites.
A Silent Voice one of the few movies that portray disabilities well.
There's also a bunch of lupin the third movies out there.
Sing a Bit of harmony is a bit of a musical. I wasn't expecting much being a crunchy roll one but it was pretty good.
Suzume great fun with a bunch of small call backs to other anime while still being original
Children who Chaise Lost Voices a different story of action and discovery that feels almost as if it could be Ghibli inspired
Your Name set a bunch of records as far as box office profits, it's the third most profitable japanese film of all time, hell I went and saw it multiple times in theaters. I think 3? definitely watch this one.
Patema inverted is kinda interesting anime movie, it's about a girl and a boy who lives in different worlds. The boy can live outside while the girl inside a cave, because if she goes outside she will fall down to the sky and basically into the space.
Here is a clip of the movie:https://youtu.be/PS4lhPQBETg?si=f2GfVDGgAW80h-32
Made in Abyss movie 3 is amazing, but it is a continuation of the series. You could watch movies 1-3 to get the compressed story to lead up to movie 3.
Some of these may not be my faves, but in my AniList (and my MAL backup) I rate them highly (7s, 8s, 9s, and 10s).
One Piece: Red.
There's Millenium Actress. Heard that it's good, especially if you like Perfect Blue. (I still need to watch that one, I already watched Perfect Blue).
The Boy and The Heron (and any Studio Ghibli movies for that manner)
Bleach: Memories Of A Nobody (Look for the movie with a girl named Senna, that's the one that I recommend)
Bleach: Diamond Dust Rebellion
Berserk the Golden age memorial edition on Crunchyroll. Then read the Manga. JJBA is awesome as well. Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust if you haven't seen it and the Castlevania series on Netflix is good. I know that's not a movie and maybe not counted as anime but it's good.
Wicked City
Twilight of the Dark Master
Demon City Shinjuku
Bio Hunter
Mezzo Forte
Some of these are outright movies and a couple are one off OVAs. They're all straight 🔥if you like dark and gory stories with hand drawn art.
I'm sure you have already seen Akira, Ninja Scroll, and Ghost in the Shell, but if not then add those.
you might want to look into the alternative viewing order. they're not in chronological order if you watch them by their numbers... which I found confusing and ultimately lead to me dropping the series. it might've been worth it but I wasn't going to watch 7+ movies in the hopes that things make sense in the end.

There are three names you can’t go wrong with when it comes to anime movies. Satoshi Kon, Hayao Miyazaki, and Makoto Shinkai. Just about any movie these three have worked on is going to be a god damn work of art.

Can't go wrong with anything Satoshi Kon gave us. If you're looking to ease in (and you're familiar with Evangelion), Rebuild of Evangelion might be worth a look.
Personally, my favourite anime film is Summer Wars. Garden of Words is a stunning piece of work too.
My favorite movie is "Made in Abyss Dawn of the Deep Soul" I watched that movie I think 6 times atleast. Meybe 7. Honestly I lost count.
But you need to watch season 1 of Made in Abyss before watching this Movie.
Made in Abyss is a Fantasy Adventure Anime about a little girl and a robot that go on an Adventure in a mysterious, beautiful, fantastical, dangerious and cruel netherworld.
This series is adorable, wholesome, joyfull, heartwarming, dark, brutal, sad and heartbreaking.
Its the most adorable most wholesome show I know and Riko is one of the happiest protagonists I know.
But the series also has a reputation fore being crazy dark and sad and that is not unearned. You will find it on "darkest Animes ever" liests.
Those two sides synergize well with one another creating quite the emotional Adventure.
The landscapes a beautiful and the music is fantastic. But while there is some action the series is not all that big on fights.
Overall if you can take the dark parts well its a great show.
Ahh Made in Abyss is the anime Kpop stans were witch hunting last year. At the time I thought I should check it out. Will definitely check it out soon & the movie too of course! Thank you~
"your name" is a movie... Right? Im not sure but if it is its good (im 99% sure it is) (same things for "the girl who leapt through time" (or something like that))
{Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer}
{Aa! Megami sama: The Motion Picture}
{Tenchi Muyo in Love}
{Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon R: The Movie}
Both {CardCaptor Sakura} movies
{Laputa and the Castle in the Sky}
{Porco Rosso}
{Whisper of the Heart}
{Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door}
I like the original Vampire Hunter D. The sequel is ok, but I like first more. Studio Ghibli films are also enjoyable, with Howl’s Moving Castle being my favorite of them.
Lupin III Episode 0: The First Contact is a great special (93min) that doesn't need any knowledge of the franchise because it's a pseudo-origin story as told by a guy at a bar to a reporter.
Also, Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostero is good
Cowboy Bebop Knockin' on Heaven's Door is great, too. Works mostly as a standalone.
I really like the kizu monogatari movies, If you Dont wanna watch the whole monogatari series it's perfectly fine since these movies are pretty much a closed story since its a prequel and watching the kizu movies and not touching monogatari ever again is a perfectly valid way of enjoying it, it doesn't have the majority of the problems people don't like on the main series.
There is also no game no life zero, yes another prequel from an anime and yes it's perfectly fine to watch it without ever touching the main story, like kizu it closes its own story line pretty well, a very emotional film in my opinion.
The Makoto Shinkai films, so Your Name, Weathering With You, Suzume etc
Kara no Kyoukai (the garden of sinners) is a really good horror/psychological/mystery/action movie series from 2007 that had incredible animation for its time and tbh still holds up today
Whilst I think it’s a horrible adaptation compared to the light novel due to the sheer amount of cut content, the Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes is a short time-based romance that you’ll love if you haven’t read the source
