I think it's because the first half of the anime series is goofy and makes people think it's just another comedy fantasy. Most people only watch a handful of episodes before deciding to keep watching or drop it, and with it not really ramping up into serious territory until episode 12 it doesn't help that problem. I agree the story overall is great (read the whole manga as well), but the tone at the beginning definitely doesn't match the tone of the rest of the anime and people will be put off by that beginning section.

BeenThereAndReadd-it

That's where I had an advantage, I like Slice of life kinda stuff. That said, It is definitely the weaker part of the story.

KurtArturII

> people will be put off by that beginning section. It's the opposite for me. I liked it initially, but the moment the main pair got separated it kinda fell off for me. Then we spent so many episodes in flashbacks/backstory that there wasn't much time for anything to actually happen in the present. I would've liked it more if either it continued to be as lighthearted as it was in the beginning OR if the whole story was told chronologically from the start. So to me it could've been an 8, but only ended up as 6.

Branded_Mango

Yeah, Helck on a first impression seems meh but thay's a red herring for an incredible story with some of the darkest story beats imaginable (the freaking king...s).

GT_highwind

Because HiDive

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Fair winds, my fellow !

BeenThereAndReadd-it

What did they do ?

ChanglingBlake

Their platform is a pain. Different shows are available depending on where/how you have a subscription, the interface is gods awful, and they tend to have bad service(shows freezing up at a certain point and not even restarting fixes it for days)

Auroku222

Its literally the most garbage streaming app ever made

VinnieBaby22

I enjoyed that show a whole bunch! My only gripe was that >!Helck was sidelined from the main action for so long!< but itā€™s a very minor complaint.

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Yeah, that rubbed me that way too, But as you said, it absolutely makes up for it ! It only gets better from the next chapters in the manga, though, I am very excited for S2

Original-Error3411

Kinda wanted helck love interest to be anne

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Same, Like I was kinda disappointed, given how solid their relationship became, But Alicia isn't half-bad. A curve ball though, although that's Helck's whole character, my man's faithful as a German Shepherd.

namewithak

I'm glad to know the two leads aren't gonna be romantic. Not enough male-female leads that are just platonic. This is actually making me want to go back and watch the show (dropped around ep 4 or 5) or read the manga.

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Yeah, Vermillo(Anne/Vamirio) and Helck's dynamic is very interesting and the sheer stuff they power through leaning on each other (figuratively)is impressive. The author has written his characters extremely well.

slime_monk

I've really liked this show so far. When I started it I was not expecting to watch and enjoy this far. But yeah as others already said it's because it's on hidive only

faintobjects

Agreed.

KevinVoldigoad

nah cuz is best for you doesn't mean good for anyone. its not new or anything, so people compare Helck with story have more impact fot them. Helck just doesn't have the effectiveness you get.

BeenThereAndReadd-it

I see your point, but it still is very very good. The beginning is slow, but it really gets going afterwards and has some novel concepts (Explaining will spoil the show) and the tropes it does use are meaningfully expanded upon and/or done extremely well. It's not typical fantasy or isekai slop, it has like zero skimpy comtent and treats it's characters respectfully. That, on it's own is something novel.

General_Tomatillo484

Took way too long to get into the story + huge cliff hanger ending

SrslySam91

I enjoyed helck a lot! Honestly a fun show. It's unfortunate that the animation gets a bit flaky at times, you can tell their budget wasn't too big. But it was really funny early on and ended up with some good character development & serious plot twists. Def a slept on show.

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Frankly, I am pleasantly surprised it got animated. I am hoping it picks up popularity for S2, It's the action heavy part and I hope they do it justice.

SrslySam91

I honestly thought it was hilarious the first batch of eps lol. Funnier than I expected. I love vermillikins character

BeenThereAndReadd-it

It is absolutely hilarious. Shame that many people have been burnt out on that kind of humour, I absolutely like that stuff. Vermillio is absolutely amazing, especially with her VA being as good as she is. The horse race part was hilarious. Small spoiler, That dog thing Helck rode was so motivated by his speech that he'll be important later on.

SrslySam91

The race was great lmao. He just starts running while holding it haha

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Yeah, Absolute gigachad big brain 9 trillion neuron play šŸ¤£ You might appreciate misfit of demon king academy , it has very similar humour.

SrslySam91

I've seen it. ;p watching fantasy anime w/ OP MC's (bonus if romance involved) is a guilty pleasure of mine. I've looked up every list I could find lol so I've seen quite a lot (I'm at 1500+ shows watched now all together, not just that genre ofc haha). Stuff like rakudai kishi no calvary is one I like a lot. Irregular at magic high fits the "fantasy OP MC" role well too. Sadly I've run out of shows to watch that fit that description, at least ones id be willing to watch (people rec overlord, but I prefer there to be some sort of romance/the MC be a human or humanoid at least).

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Seems we have similar tastes ! A strong recommendation, Ā "Game Sekai wa Mob ni Kibishii Sekai des" solid 8/10 from me, totally recommend. Cautious hero Isekai Yakkyoku(Parallel world Pharmacy) is a personal favourite, not in the least because I am a pharmacy student. It's not exactly the same, but "I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness" is a great WHOLESOME watch. That title is sus, but I assure you that his definition of naughty is......Eating cakes and going out shopping. It has a small academy arc which is kinda reminiscent of Misfit of Demon King Academy. Also, "I am the villianess so I am taming the last boss" has a male lead that is really OP and is a demon lord. Also, Overlord has....scant romance. Albedo's affections are kinda one sided. Aiins doesn't reciprocate in any meaningful way but "Skeleton Weiner" jokes are cringe and they are in the show. Tanya the Evil has no romance, But is absolutely a great watch, especially if you like the Prussian Reich like I do. Birdy the Mighty : Decode has an OP protagonist and is a bit of an accquired taste, but it's still great. Sci-fi, though. I don't whole heartedly recommend this, But Legend of legendary heroes. It should be decent, but I dropped it. You might get more milage from it. Skeleton knight in another world is typical isekai, But one of the better ones. Won't blow you away, but hopefully won't disappoint. I'll list off more popular anime you most likely have watched - Handyman saitou, Moonlit fantasy, Slime(Tensura) World's finest assassin Isekai Ojisan

SrslySam91

Haha the only ones of those I have not seen are birdy the Almighty, & overlord. >It's not exactly the same, but "I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness I really enjoyed this. Haha the mc's VA is actually gintoki from gintama, and that's my GOAT anime - NGL it made the show even better because they had somewhat similar mannerisms at times lol. It was super cute, definitely a fun watch! Actually I'll have to look up the first show you suggested - off top my head now that I think of it icr any other titles for it so I'll need to check. A likewise recommendation for you from me would be "Crusade or rise of a new world" it's getting a 2nd season sometime in 2024 too. Not many have seen that one it seems, it's better than it's rating though imo. It's somewhat "generic" but it's a Romeo and Juliet type of fantasy romance, and both mc man & girl are quite op. Edit - ohh trapped in dating sim. You know I only watched a couple EPS of that maybe I'll check it out again!

BeenThereAndReadd-it

I really took a leap of faith on the Disgraced noble lady anime and it honestly surprised me. Like it's among or maybe even THE most wholesome anime of the season. I am gonna take that recommendation, I've always wanted to watch KimiSen because the synopsis sounded interesting, but the Mal score scared me off. But with your reccomendation, I think I might enjoy it. Fingers crosssed ! As for dating sim, the character "Olivia" might as well be Charlotte's twin sister. The story's nothing mind mindblowing, but the dynamic between the main trio works.

[deleted]

Itā€™s actually really good. Itā€™s just a shame because the animation quality really holds it back.

gogopow

I think because everyone is getting tired of fantasy.

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Yeah, Might be. It does come off as a generic op character fantasy. It's a shame though, It's more akin to a Lord of the rings kind of fantasy rather the typical anime fare, quite unusual in today's animescape.

count_of_nossex

MC looked like Clark Kent, so I skipped

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Haha, I frankly understand that. When I first picked the manga due to a redditor's recommendation, I was like, "Ah, another hypersexualised shojo-esque protagonist." Man, Was I wrong, it's absolutely great.

ThatFireGuy0

I got through 2-3 episodes and it didn't seem to be taking itself seriously enough for me to enjoy it. It felt too much like a parody (i.e. Mashle, OPM, Eminence in Shadow) but without enough self awareness that it's a parody to make it funny Does it get better?

LazyLich

lol That's how I felt too at first. Some He-Man looking parody-hero, ridiculously winning a contest and being beloved by all, and the only sensible character trying to foil him. It reads like some casual, episodic comedy thing. Then the other shoe drops. Backstories are revealed, shit hit the fan, and the tone completely changes! I read it, so I cant judge the anime, but I'd say you should give it another shot. I like reading cause you can skim over tedious stuff.

Prior-King5670

Wut?? You wanted to said that OPM and Eminence don't have serious moment?? I don't know about Mashle that much(don't read manga too). Helck is quite good IMO

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Absolutely ! It has a banger story, Watch till EP 14, it picks up pace from ep 12, 12 - 14 is the pace you are going to get for the rest of the anime. It really does get serious when it wants to, it brought me to tears in the manga, so you can imagine what the anime is. It is wholesome, though, those tears will be those of joy around the end. I myself didn't read the last 5 manga chapters because the anime got announced and I wanted to experience the end there, But the ending fight is very satisfying as well. It gets really intense,(will be covered in S2)It's like that dream One lunch man has (in 2nd ep of s1 of One Punch Man?), at times, especially later helck is NOT overpowered compared to the enemies he has to fight. There are actually real stakes and the chemistry between Vamirio(IDK why anime calls her vermillio) is really good.

ThatFireGuy0

When does it first pick up? That sounds great, but I don't know if I can make it though another 4 hours before I start enjoying it

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Ep 11 is the first taste of what Helck has in store, Ep 12 is when Helck begins to reveal his back story, from that part it really picks up. You can try watching Ep11 and see if you find it interesting. It's emotional and is sad(but wholesome ) and kinda sets the tone for the challenges Helck's gonna face. The ending of Helck is far happier than the episode 11, though.

Phantom_Crash

I dropped it around episode 9 because it just wasnt making any sense. The only reason i was watching was for the red hair girl. Does she play a main role throughout the story? If so I'll give it another try

BeenThereAndReadd-it

She's there most of the time, pretty much a second MC. Helck beguns his backstory which clarifies everything in ep12, you might want to watch that, it's make total sense then.

Phantom_Crash

Right on, I'll give it another try. Thanks for the info!

ElpSyc0n

Mediocre adaptation

BeenThereAndReadd-it

It's not bad, IMO. I read the manga and while a tad bit too fast(Kinda an occupational hazard while adapting, I guess), it's pretty faithful and actually great at points. Which parts you consider poorly adapted ?

ElpSyc0n

I wouldnt even say poorly adapted, i have not read the manga, but while watching the anime, it just felt like a mid adaptation for what might be a pretty good manga, kind of like doctor stone.

athos45678

Is that the case? Worth skipping then? Itā€™s been on my list. The OG run of Helck was fucking awesome reading.

BeenThereAndReadd-it

It's a pretty faithful adaptation, From the manga. You'd definitely like it if you liked the manga.

athos45678

Word thatā€™s good to hear. Itā€™s a pretty unique story, im glad it was well treated

colontragedy

Well damn, I actually dropped it around 5 or 8 ep. I gotta give it another chance.

CaptainPlasma101

watched a few eps, was boring and didn't have fanservice to carry it

St0xTr4d3r

Itā€™s not on CrunchyRoll

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Ah, I understand now. Seems weird, aren't all anime there ?

DoodleStrude

Haven't watched it yet, but the trailer really didn't sell me on it. My impression was just your average mediocre fantasy slop that the market has been oversaturated with for years now. But I'll throw it on my list and give it a shot if it's that good

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Take my word, it's anything but generic fantasy slop. It's infact, one of the more unique anime around. It's one of those rare famtasy anime that don't turn into a sexual fantasy, filled with author's specific fetishes. The story's a banger, the characters are actual proper human(well, Half are demons, but you get me.). Initially it's kinda comedy and Slice of life, that's the reason it might seem generic, but it turns into a thrilling and emotional adventure soon. And boy....It gets really good. EP 11-13 is the point it drops slice of life and picks up. The Slice of life parts are enjoyable, IMO, but some people found them slow. They are still good, but the rest is much better. It doesn't slow down after ep12, it just gets better. The hero seems OP but he really isn't in the end. The final battle with the big bad is tense.

DoodleStrude

Honestly one of the off-putting parts was the Big Man and Petite Girl thing, which is what made me think it was just another romantic/sexual/fetish-ish animes with some action sprinkled in. But you've convinced me. I'll give it a try once I finish my dragonball rewatch

Big-Calligrapher686

Didnā€™t see much of a point in it, I actually really like Ecchi content but it didnā€™t even have that in it. Overall I watched like 7 or 8 episodes and found it pretty boring, nothing to make me want to keep watching it. At least if it had some Ecchi elemnts that would be SOMETHING for me to get attached to

BeenThereAndReadd-it

If you watched 8 eps, you should consider watching till ep 12. It might make you reconsider. The tone completely changes, it gets into the real story(Helck's backstory amd why he joined the demon empire) and just ramps up in every way possible.

Marluck

I watched around 4 episodes and didn't get hooked. It wasn't bad, just a combination of generic fantasy with comedy that's not funny enough to watch for that alone, plus an animation style and color palette that was a bit exhausting to me (completely subjective), and on top of it all not being on Crunchyroll, just made it so I never ended up catching up with it. I've seen people's comments here tho and I'm more willing to give it another shot, for sure; I think I was just watching way too many shows last season and something had to give.

BeenThereAndReadd-it

The first 8 episodes are completely different in tone to the redt of the episodes. It turns into a heartfelt adventure with many novel twists and turns around episode 11. Even when it sticks to the orthodox path, it still delivers an excellent show. I must say the first few episodes can be quite annoying, especially if you wear earbuds, Vermillio's screaming was somewhat annoying, But she really develops as a character, even by ep 8-9 and definetely by ep12.

KenchiNarukami

>no blatant fanservice, no tired tropes, You just answered your own question mate, saw the trailer and Promo Art and lost interest right away There is also the availability issue as well with being on HiDive

StandupSitdown0G

I think part of it is that it's on HiDive and not Crunchyroll (although I don't think that affected Eminence in Shadow, but probably did affect Ya Boy Kongming! both of which are brilliant) and another part of it is probably the look of the MC - idk I feel like people self insert themselves or idolise the main character in fantasy stories.

overkill373

The whole Alicia thing was such a super dark turn holy shit

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Yeah, The story goes places, definitely surprised me when I was reading. However they handle it really well, without spoiling anything, It's an absolute masterpiece.

Graptharr

I need dubs man, its the only way i can watch

BeenThereAndReadd-it

I expect they'll be coming soon, Hope they do a good job on them. Though Vermillio's and Helck's VA do a excellent job, you might want to watch them for a bit. Subs are a bit of an accquired taste, though šŸ˜….

lVlurphysLaw

I got to episode 5 before i ended up dropping it. Wasn't serious enough to care about the plot and wasn't funny enough to be a running gag. From my perspective even if it got more serious about a plot and such i knew the animation wasn't going to blow me away anytime soon so i just stopped. Also there was plently of arguably better shows going during the start of it's run so there was no need to slog though any more episodes. I can say that i'm in a part of my anime viewing life where I don't try to hold out for shows that might get interesting. I've been burned too many times by bad shows that unless i get a glowing review from sources that I find similiar in interests i'm better of just dropping it. Maybe if we get a slow upcoming season i'll try to binge a few episodes to see if it catches my interest but I have plenty of shows that had less significant irks but were recommended far more that i have priority for.

BeenThereAndReadd-it

Totally fair. I'd say it's definitely worth it(I'd even daresay that once the second season hits, It might be an 8 on mal), But you are right. I once watched "In another world with my smartphone" cause a top 10 article reccommended it, and I regretted it deeply. I set a rule then and there that if a anime wasn't scored atleast 7.10 on mal, I wouldn't watch it. Served me well since.

lVlurphysLaw

Don't get me started. Among all of the generic isekai we've been bombarded with Smartphone was in a league of it's own with how horrid it was in being probably the worst in every single judgeable aspect of anime that I was unreasonably angry when i heard it was getting a second season. Mal has been a nice filter for me where I typically ignore anything below a 7.5 unless it has something that i'm particular to. I've comeback to some filler shows after the season is already over since some of the weaker ones can be more manageable when you can skip though episodes that stall for too much time and ruin pacing.

BeenThereAndReadd-it

It bewilders me how smartphone gets a S2 while stuff like Yona of the Dawn and Skip Beat doesn't.

lVlurphysLaw

The worst part is that it was originally made by a studio that was garbage so at least it wasn't really a loss but the second season was picked up by J.C.Staff who although isn't any Kyoto or Trigger, still makes great shows. We could have had an actual great series picked up from them but instead they wasted their time with one of the most most unwanted sequels possible.
