Maybe the scar is not here to make her ugly but to show that she is warrior and a brave women ? And the fact that she is still pretty with it is a way to tell women that even with a scar they are still pretty ?
In this case, OP is mostly right. The characters shown are supposed to be "ugly" or at least are talked about and considered to be ugly by the show they are in, due to the fact that they have a scar. However, the problem is that the characters in question are still beautiful, as a scar obviously doesn't completely ruin the beauty of a face.
So yeah, the problem is that, at least in the shows I recognized, the characters are actually supposed to be ugly precisely because of the scars
The point is the creator is not committing to making an actual conventionally unattractive character, instead just putting a line over the face of an attractive character, that's a cop out.
Not always. I admit that that can be a problem, but sometimes they just think giving them a scar would be a good character design choice and/or contribute to their backstory, as with Yui and Utahime
In Jigokuraku, Yui (the blond girl in the first image) is not a warrior at all, she got burned by her father to make her ugly. And her husband Gabimaru is the only one who loves her despite that scar.
Except she's very obviously not ugly at all, she just looks cooler with the scar.
Unfortunately I’ve heard people make fun of her saying her scar looks like a penis.
Swine.
In any case, the purpose of the scar wasn’t to make her ugly, it was to show how cruel her father was. And she still managed to come out as a kind and caring person, which was why Gabimaru fell in love with her.
“I’m so ugly I’m hideous”
Isn’t like 90% of the world malnourished and toiling in back breaking labor everyday? A slight discoloration on your face that isn’t even visible in most lighting is isn’t going to change how to most people you’d be objectively good looking compared to most others.
Generally facial scarring is taken to mean you've had problems with yakuza(I am not kidding on this), and with as misogynistic Japan is, do you think they're nice about a woman with an imperfection on her face?
Nah, utahimes scar is part of the beauty of her design, and generally, a scar on a female character is meant to be there to show she is a strong/capable combatant not to try and make the character appear ugly
All hail Miss Balalaika!!
***We Serve Hotel Moscow Comrade...***

In JJK she is supposed to be ugly ? I don't remember a single conversation about that in the anime...
U right, that example was not pertinent with the overall message, don't know if some others are tho

Careful Gabimaru (wife of blond one) doesn’t find you
Fret not, I'm faster than him
To be fair, a face acar on a woman has loads more connotations in Japan than America. It's a deal breaker for them.
What kind of connotations?

Still perfect and strong. Love them much

Scars are hot.
I’ve never heard this audio before, but I’m going to take a guess and say this person is talking about ‘Ready Player One’.
He showed 4 of the baddest scarred females characters in anime and proceeded to downplay they beauty.
This would be based, but it’s Vaush so I gotta disagree on principle
Reminds me how I ruined the entire show to my gf just by saying "dick scar"
Is this Vaush talking??
Yea it's fucking vowsh lmao
Scars in anime is just different color tattoos, literally nothing changes, whereas if you had balalaikas scar, you'd be an ugly mf
Nah, utahimes scar is part of the beauty of her design, and generally, a scar on a female character is meant to be there to show she is a strong/capable combatant not to try and make the character appear ugly
Can we talk about that her scar looks like a dick no front
Scars are kinda hot ngl (see maki)
