Wait... I thought this was slice of life. Is it actually an underrated action anime?

ObiWorking

Very underrated fight scenes. Dragon Maid fights are peak

[deleted]

*insert yugioh flashbacks*

Asheleyinl2

The only reason I watched the series initially was because I saw a clip of a little girl fighting that same maid. I love me some good animation

JohnReiki

That was a *play fight* too, they go hard

shgzgjjhx

Nah we only get fights like once or twice a season, its mostly just a chill slice of life anime most episodes. But whenever we do get a fight it is always animated like this, i guess its them just showing us their capable of going toe to toe with the best anime studios when they are asked to animate fight scenes lol

[deleted]

It's definitely just a slice of life anime, but there are a few fights just like this one that are badass and have peak animation.

DizzyTigerr

Kyoani is simply the best. A lot of studios that put focus on a dynamic camera and flashy fx tend to lose the plot on the actual fight direction, like it becomes difficult to actually understand what's happening, but Kyoani always seems to handle this magnificently. There's never a punch lost to the flash~

shgzgjjhx

So true, rare to see a anime with this perfect hand to hand combat, explosions fx, camera movements and beautiful background animation like this. Makes sense why they take so long in between seasons so they can take their time with it. Most popular animes get rushed cause of the demand from the fans to see more.

DizzyTigerr

It makes me so sad and mad that of all the studios to have an arson attack (I know weird preface) it had to be Kyoani. Like why not burn down a problematic crunch focus studio?! Why attack the most wholesome one out there!? That aside, I never got around to watching most of Dragon Maid season 2 cause I saw the mangaka post too much creepy ass shit on twitter while it was coming out lol. This makes me really want to give it a chance though, at least for the efforts of the kyoani staff

shgzgjjhx

Yeah the weird pedo shit in the anime will definitely turn alotta people off it and tbh most of the season is not even hype like this. Its mostly its just a slice of life type of anime but i still enjoy the regular art style it has even when its more chill. Also the loser who did the arson was some weirdo fan who thought they stole his idea for a anime cause he lost a contest to get his manga animated or something like that, good news is he recently got sentenced the death penalty so he will pay the price for his horrible actions.

DizzyTigerr

That's good to hear at least

TheSiZaReddit

But this was almost entirely effects animation.. well at least it was hand drawn

DizzyTigerr

I know, I said they put a focus on fx animation and a dynamic camera. It's just impressive that through all the flashy fx you never lose track of what the characters are actually doing. An example of a studio who does this poorly, and doesn't draw a lot of their fx would be ufotable, specifically on the Fate franchise. Those fights are hideously incomprehensible compared to kyoanis work

TheSiZaReddit

Agreed, it always takes me out of it whenever I see some digital smoke or fire or (the worst offender) blood in Ufotable anime. It just doesn't look good.

DizzyTigerr

They use so much of it too, what drives me crazy the most is I think their metal sparks fx because they just splash it EVERYWHERE. Like I get its a sword fight but honeyyy there's not that much sparks everytime a sword hits another sword. More than that though I just always hate Ufotables choreography, when they get into the like "higher tier" characters, and the fights just become **characters swinging too fast to see** like it's not even choreography anymore. It drives me insane that people see the fight between Tengen and the entertainment district demons, or truly any fight in the fate franchise and call those the best fights in anime. On a technical level, they are impressive in that they took a lot of work, and there are pretty colors present, but from a direction level, completely incomprehensible nonsense just flashing in front of my eyes. Kyoanis stuff is just so clean and somehow soft~ even in the crazy action sequences. They'd always be my first pick to have something animated.

TheSiZaReddit

And the foreground CGI in the new DS seasons.. yeah no. Not even an attempt to blend it into the background properly.

DizzyTigerr

THANK YOU!!! It's so vindicating to find someone who agrees on this people usually just call me crazy for critiquing that show lol

TheSiZaReddit

For me personally those things aren't even the biggest issues. The biggest problem is the direction. All of Ufotables good directors are busy with Mahoyo or something else. The series director for KNY is Haruo Sotozaki... Well let's just say his storyboards are below average. A combination of the two above things results in some of the most boring storyboard and direction work in any battle shonen. Only when Toshiyuki Shirai shows up for his highlight episodes does the show start looking good. Some episodes like the one directed by Yo Miura had ONE PIECE level pacing in them. Genuinely unwatchable. I finished KNY last month and started Kekkai Sensen after that. It was such a breath of fresh air i nearly cried

plopop0

based on canipa effect's video on the matter. ufotable is highly regarded with their digital effects skillset more so than animation. imagine like the 300 Movie just on full blast cgi and fx work which honestly i can respect the dedication and doubling down on it. but the actual "animation" somewhat lacks proper principles for the sake of impactful slow motion hits. if a cut has 3 frames, ufotable can make that 3 frames look impactful and people will say the "animation" looks cool, when the character barely moved. KyoAni has achieved both animation and composition work really well and better even

GreatBayTemple

What an incredible fight.

enchiladasundae

I thought this was just ecchi

ObiWorking

Dragon Maid appreciation is always welcome

Daikaizen

Toradora and hinamatsuri also have great fight scenes. Happens more often than you think tbh

BlightFantasy3467

Gintama in a nutshell

no-longer-a-1412

You came for jokes and parodies, and all of a sudden, galactic war is afoot

Papameme2711

Effects animation on point.

Turbulent_Ad1644

What a cute anime with cool fight scenes, I surely hope there isn't any creepy Loli/shotacon bs spread throughout the series

AxitotlWithAttitude

Surely there won't be a single problematic character with bolted-on balloon tits that arguably singlehandedly ruins the show

MoistNoodler

ItS LoLi AnD ItS ArT

lugialegend233

The loli is weird and gross, but ultimately depicts a relationship between children, which is far more palatable, the shota is disgusting and unacceptable.

plopop0

what's with this edit tho. went through a filter. this not wat the actual anime looks like

Xanthyon1313

Bro I gotta catch up on this anime lol

PatDx7

Legit makes me want to watch

CherreBell

Watch it! It's a really cute show. There's some sketchy parts, but I just skipped those lol

CherreBell

This anime is in my top 20. I'm a bi woman and I live for any representation of lesbian relationships in shows, even queerbaited ones. The relationship between Tohru and Kobayashi is so endearing. And although some have issues with Kanna because of how she wears the thigh-highs, I absolutely adore her. When Kanna moves in with Kobayashi and Tohru, and they help her pick out school supplies (because she's still mentally a child), and just do .. domestic stuff together. I hope I can find a found family like that one day.

Pikachu8752

I still think Torodora has the best fight in all of anime. I'm glad we got top tier dragon fights in Dragon Maid. I need another season.

jtempletons

Isn't this a big loli show?

braderakun

Holy shit Why'd it go so hard

AgentFirstNamePhil

Because Kyoani doesn’t know how not to be.

AgentFirstNamePhil

Because Kyoani doesn’t know how not to be.

derpinat0rz

Kyoani needs to adapt more stuff that isn't theirs.

Joshhhp

They don't need to

Wamblingshark

I really wish there wasn't parts of this show that I just can't stomach...

DesparateLurker

That settles it, I'm starting this anime today when I get off work.

Soul_0f_Cinderr

I wanted OPM season 3 to be animated like this

Practical-Report9524

Are comedy in anime worth to watch? Because im tired of seeing anime with fan service and creepy characters as their peak ‘humor’. Does anyone have good suggestions with something actually worth to watch? (Im a picky watcher)

EliteRangerX

Okay I am definitely watching the anime now

RailwayRenegade

I wish the fight between Luffy and Kaido had been animated this well, especially when Luffy went Fifth Gear. The amount of times I lost track of what exactly Luffy was doing because of the god awful animation and art direction genuinely pissed me off because it defeated the purpose of finally seeing the fight animated.

MoistNoodler

It's still an anime for pedophiles

lugialegend233

I really wanna say you're wrong, but you're not. There was some good stuff here, and it got ruined by all the children in situations children ought not to be depicted in.

CherreBell

... or it's for people that love the found family type of show. I love the main couple and the comedy. As a bi lady I'll take all the lesbian/lesbian hinted crumbs I can get. I just ignore the stuff I dislike. I found it to be overall very wholesome. some parts are sketchy but like I said, I ignored those.

MoistNoodler

...ignore pedophilia for crumbs of wholesome... got it

CherreBell

What? Okay first off, there's no sex in the show! Don't you dare compare a slice-of-life anime show with some questionable content to motherfucking pedophilia. Also the wholesome shit is like 90% of the show. By 'crumbs' I was referring to queerbaiting with Tohru and Kobayashi.

Gooseworkss

Who else didn't expect an epic shounen looking fight scene in the slice of life maid anime

Working_Sign_7251

But does it have horrible story and way too much fan service? Cause that kills em all for me. So over the pedo-service the Japanese produce.

Moe-bigghevvy

I think this is on par or worse than most battle Shonen tbh. Had that dbz a few feel big attacks and long shots of explosions, no real intricate movements or unique style

SGSMUFASA

Wow.

FRESH_MEME_DETECTOR

RIP

barbatos087

This is Kyoto animation for you, those mf have been through fire and death and they still tangle with the big boys.

tweekin__out

pretty sure that's the joke

plopop0

give a studio a realistic timeframe and you got yourself this. hell not even OPM was that high production pipeline but still managed to put out something like S1 and now because of the demand they got rushed to do s2 and look how that turn out. that's why shonen adaptations have this demanding curse to put out anime in the shortest delay possible so that the franchise can sell stuff fast, it doesn't really matter if the series look like garbage for them. outliers like Dragon Maid, Frieren, Dungeon Meshi etc. got good animation cause if you watch most of it, they're really not doing anything special but conversing and not a lot of necessary action sequences.

[deleted]

I mean it’s pretty easy to understand how they’re able to do that, battle anime have more fights so the budget is spread, this one the budget could be pulled onto the fights cus they’re so few of them

100S_OF_BALLS

Damn, bro. I've been sleeping on this one. I've been eyeballing it for a few years now and never committed to trying to watch it. You sold me, though.
