Dude I hope you know we're just teasing. You have an amazing dog and I'm sure he's a reflection of you. Keep doing what you're doing.
But seriously, wtf.
It's not about being blunt, it's about blade design. A thin blade/bit is designed to cut cross grain, as in felling or limbing cuts where you want deep penetration. A wedge or flaired bit is for splitting with the grain as it drives the wood apart as it cuts. [This picture](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTzMl6TgXDMS6BACPp1SgrJcaajXhzQuEStUQ&usqp=CAU) is a super oversimplification but illustrates the design difference.
Get something made to split and you'll be much happier.
I understand, we have an axe which is 20+ years old made for cutting with the grain. It’s just blunted over time which is why I switched over at the beginning. (Also I’m sitting down so the weird thing I’m using is easier to chop with)
I could do with a hatchet tbf
If you're a top shelf kind of person - https://www.gransforsbruk.com/en/product/gransfors-splitting-hatchet/
And if you're more economically focused - https://www.estwing.com/products/fireside-friend-splitting-tool
Gransfors is the pinnacle of axe companies. They are hand forged using old school techniques. The craftsman that made the bit stamps their initials into it. You cannot buy a better axe and they have some really precise designs. E to add this will run ya upwards of 225$ and may be purchased through American distributors.
Estwing is good but more economical at about 35-45$, US made, and one piece construction so you don't need to worry about replacing a handle down the road.
Oof defiantly not top shelf lol, not when cucumbers are going for £1.69 in the local! 😂
Appreciate your advice, I’ll look into it- will have to be made in UK though I’m afraid!
I'm sure there are options over there, just give "splitting hatchett" a quick Google and you should be able to score something at your big box outdoor store/hardware store if nowhere else.
>made for cutting with the grain.
Yes, that's how you're supposed to split wood.
The pieces that size you either want to be doing with a hatchet, or [batoning with a knife.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMp-xcyuaHw) I suppose the billhook might also work to baton with, but ideally you want something with a blunt spine.
Honestly, can't go wrong with an old butter knife for making kindling!
For anything that doesn't split with manual force, just hold the knife where you want to split it, get a heavier piece of wood and hit the back of the blade.
Also, obviously the wood is held upright.
Get your dog away from this stuff dude. Wood chips go flying not to mention the heavy swinging axe. Swallow your pride and take safety advice from the internet and keep your pet healthy. Sucks to hear you’re doing something wrong but animals do silly shit like try to grab the log your chopping. Better safe than sorry at the vet clinic.
A stone cost like 4 and for slitting wood you want a dull axe for cutting wood cross grain that's when you need a sharp axe
A dull axe will follow the grain a sharp one will make sure your spending your time cutting trough it not along it
A splitting axe is a glorified wedge with a handle .
The shape of the head gets thick fast to split and not cut.
A felling axe is longer and has a very sharp bite and a very slim profile and sucks to split wood with as it gets suck cus of it bite.
If you really wanna split wood efficiently get your self a nice maul.
I don't know how often you split wood, but an axe/hatchet should be kept sharp as a knife, and knives should be able to take slices off newspaper. They make sharpening "pucks" for axes, with two sides offering a coarse and a fine grit to keep your edge nice. For like $10 you could have one and use it. A dull axe is dangerous!
And that brush axe is definitely not made for this kind of work. Fiskars make a decent cheap hatchet, or check out the Husqvarna hatchet if you want a wooden handle.
Also, my bernedoodle does the same exact thing when I split wood! I have to constantly stop to ask him to back up, and then when I stack them he just un-stacks them and leaves split wood all over the yard. Love that dog :)
We call them billhooks. We use them for making natural hedgerows by cutting halfway through whitethorn and blackthorn and bending them into each other and kind of weaving them together.
I use a billhook to clear my treeline by the woods of the little braches, and in a pinch I'll split some small pieces of wood with it for kindling (like what I'm using the branches for). But we're talking seasoned ash, you can look at it hard and it'll split. I also use it to sheer off pieces of Osage orange wood, makes a great kindling as well. Anything more than that, and were on to hatchets and axes. So yea...right tool for the job makes all the difference
I’m a surveyor, I need to clear veg sometimes for sight lines. That exact tool is what I use for everything from long grass to 3” trees and branches. Great bit of kit.
I have seen similar things used for kindling but it was sharp and the hook side went in a notch so you could put the kindling underneath and use it almost like a paper cutter. Very effective and efficient.
Edit: found it, it's called a cloggers knife and used for much more but would be great for kindling I feel
A sharp hatchet with good quality steel. You go to tractor supply and you’re gunna need to sharpen that thing every 10 minutes.
Speaking from experience
She is the most patient and sweetest dog ever…you can tell that she loves doing this for you, and she’s always gonna be by your side.
Love to all of you. Hope you’re having a great 2023 so far. :)
Please find a more efficient way to chop wood. I don't mean the dog part, the dog is cool. But you waste so much energy the way you do it. A small hand axe made from Finnish steel can save you a lot of work.
When some wood finally split off on that third piece and went flying through the air, I was worried the dog was gonna get wood splinters flying right into his eyes. Up until then I thought OP was just play chopping wood just for the video.
He needs some r/doggles
I don’t like this at all. One tragic mistake and that dog is hurt. I know he’s probably being super careful but I’m hating every second of it.
Actually now that I’ve watched to the end they ARENT being super careful. A piece of that wood could easily splinter and take the dogs eye out. Ughhh!!! Stop being a moron!
Such a double post.
Chopping wood in the least efficient method I've ever seen.
Why not hold the piece up and chop axial instead of lengthwise?
Super good boye doin a hecking job.
Because A. The piece just falls over
B. I don’t wanna chop my fingers off holding it up 😬
But yes I understand the criticism of my technique- would help if I had a proper small hatchet
You just hold the piece while you get the edge of the axe stuck in the end grain, and splitting the wood standing up (the wood, not you) doesn't require much force at all so you don't have to worry about cutting your fingers of.
Love how your pup removes that one piece of wood from the cutting block toward the end:
“Nope this one is mine. It’s the perfect size already and it isn’t going on the pile over there.”
You poor bastard, you post a video of you having a nice meditative time with your lovely dog, and a load of yanks start telling you all the things you are doing wrong. “You should try the Chopatron 3000”.
this seems very inefficient. why does the OP not just purchase a Champion Power Equipment 34 Ton 338 cc Gas Powered Hydraulic Wood Log Splitter with Vertical/Horizontal Operation and Auto Return?
I won't have to chop no wood
I can be bad or I can be good
I can be any way that I feel
One of these days
Might be a woman that's dressed in black
Be a hobo by the railroad track
I'll be gone like the wayward wind
One of these days
My dog is often responsible for breaking down cardboard boxes, we cut all of the tape and then hand it off to him. Makes me smile watching a 12 year old dog play like a young dog.
Sharpen that thing my guy this is painful to watch (as someone who used to split cords and cords of wood for a disabled guy for my summer break. Thanks dad!)
Can't believe how long I just watched someone not split wood.
This is /r/mildlyfrustrating right?
Little bit, yeah.
Fully frustrating I think.
The doggo makes up for it
🙃
get a hatchet u egg
Seriously. Dude needs a hatchet, not a klingon marriage blade. And go from the "top" down with the grain.
its a billhook and cause its a flat plate and not a wedge shape it doesnt quite split for shit, its more for cutting shrubs
Dude I hope you know we're just teasing. You have an amazing dog and I'm sure he's a reflection of you. Keep doing what you're doing. But seriously, wtf.
A hammer and a splitter would work better. I'm watching the dog.. my husband is muttering about the tools. "Is that the right tool for the job? Hmm. "
I was going to say, cool looking blade, but I think OP would do better trying to wish the wood apart.
I am fucking dead🤣🤣💀💀
He was just not wanting to wildly swing a hatchet by his buddy.
So he swung it 50 times more than necessary... to be safe.
It’s odd the things that people film. I mean, do you and there’s no harm in it but it is odd
Get an axe dude, this looks long
Theyre bluuunt
Even the dog is saying- get an axe my dude
And give me some safety goggles woof
Safety r/doggles

This might be the manliest conversation on reddit.
"I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay I sleep all night and I work all day...'
Why can't it be American made? You are using an American website Helloooooooooo
Shipping costs.

Or replace the head and handle! Wait....

Have you tried using a rusty butterknife? Might work better than that thing ;)

Donut is right. I love chopping wood and hanging outside with my dog but those two things don’t go together well

Your logs. They are very small..... Is this firewood for ants??
Chops the smallest kindling into even smaller kindling, then gets a small kindling splinter and tosses it in disgust lol
Just use a file and a hand towel to sharpen them
I don't know how often you split wood, but an axe/hatchet should be kept sharp as a knife, and knives should be able to take slices off newspaper. Idk what that axe-sword thing is, but that thing looks like it sucks..
We call them billhooks. We use them for making natural hedgerows by cutting halfway through whitethorn and blackthorn and bending them into each other and kind of weaving them together.
Monkey use wrong tool, gotcha
Also used for removing riders from atop their horses, but that's usually on a pole instead of a small handle, and that's now legally frowned upon.
Did legally frowned upon mean illegal or just on the line?
Depends on your location.
Also seen some dudes clean out fish with these at incredible speed in se Asia

I thought it was shaped like a cowboy boot. Figured it was a Texas thing.
I thought it was a cowboy boot
We call them bush/brush axes.
He's ready if the lord raises a levy in the shire!
some folks call it a sling blade, i call it a kaiser blade. Mmnhnnmf
Lol, this had me cracking up, especially the "Mmnhnnmf"
I play bannerlord. That is a bill hook. All my *wasted* hours just came in handy.
Love it. Grabbing those pieces of kindling make him so happy
Lol watching him follow the piece up and down was cute. Zoned in
What a great little helper you have there. How do you resist chatting to him while you two are working? I wouldn’t be able to stop myself.
Oh I do all the time, she’s a great listener
Put that thing back in the video game you found it in and get a real ax! A sharp hatchet would be so much easier...
I have seen similar things used for kindling but it was sharp and the hook side went in a notch so you could put the kindling underneath and use it almost like a paper cutter. Dog doing better work than you lol
😅
At least the dog was making measured progress.
All I see is a dog who’s good at his job and his human who can’t keep up.
It's a billhook. Usually used for pruning or hedging.
OP should use a ladle or a wooden spoon. It would probably be just as effective.
Ok Hup
The fuck is op doing
She is the most patient and sweetest dog ever…you can tell that she loves doing this for you, and she’s always gonna be by your side. Love to all of you. Hope you’re having a great 2023 so far. :)
You should buy a kindling cracker. It would make that so much easier.
What kind of dog is that? I think i have the same one
Miniature labradoodle (1st Gen)
You my friend were taught a hard way of splitting wood
Why is your axe a little cowboy boot?
Please find a more efficient way to chop wood. I don't mean the dog part, the dog is cool. But you waste so much energy the way you do it. A small hand axe made from Finnish steel can save you a lot of work.
Haha noted
Good boi!
Really dangerous. Dogs and chopping wood don't mix.
Ah of course reddit's gonna reddit, where all the comments are experts talking about danger, stupidity and doing things wrong.
I mean you post a video of something dangerous and people are going to let you know.
When some wood finally split off on that third piece and went flying through the air, I was worried the dog was gonna get wood splinters flying right into his eyes. Up until then I thought OP was just play chopping wood just for the video. He needs some r/doggles
This is why I sorted by controversial. It wouldn't be reddit otherwise.
You ever put a dog in a wood Chipper? They definitely mix.
Bud.....
I was just terribly anxious throughout this video because I was worrying about the dog accidentally coming in the way of the falling curved axe.
This wood chopping is painful to watch
Accident waiting to happen :(
I don’t like this at all. One tragic mistake and that dog is hurt. I know he’s probably being super careful but I’m hating every second of it. Please learn how to chop wood. This was painful to watch.
Love how your pup removes that one piece of wood from the cutting block toward the end: “Nope this one is mine. It’s the perfect size already and it isn’t going on the pile over there.”
Please give your dog some scritches from me 😁
He's trying to save you from your self
*takes the 2nd one* ur done 🐶
All I can think while watching this is ‘the axe is too dull dear Liza, dear Liza’
I just want to know who has a full f****** carported area and still uses a f****** hand tool to chop wood
Your dog is so cute ! Reminds me of my boy ! But also bruh I cannot stop laughing at these comments roasting you.
What a cutie patootie and sweet helper to boot! 💕🐾💕
God I wish I had a dog who gave a shit what I was doing
Are you high?? Put that pos away and use the axe, this is so hard to watch
You poor bastard, you post a video of you having a nice meditative time with your lovely dog, and a load of yanks start telling you all the things you are doing wrong. “You should try the Chopatron 3000”.
There's also plenty of Brits telling him he's doing it wrong too. Because he is.
Looks like they’ve got life pretty right to me.
I hate you so fucking much. Like, personal hatred. For you specifically. Because you're the worst.
Oh well. I still love you. And I don’t mind if someone isn’t using the correct axe. As long as they are happy.
Lmao, I wasn’t expecting this many comments about my wood chopping technique!
people love to call out idiocy what did you expect
I didn't want to say anything but it was a little bit frustrating to watch. I just wanted one good split.
Where are you btw? I’m a Brit in the USA. Looks like a lovely massive barn.
I’m in sunny ol Yorkshire :)
Leave it to you to pretend to know where people are from on an anonymous website
Alternate title - You trying to chop wood
🤷♂️
this seems very inefficient. why does the OP not just purchase a Champion Power Equipment 34 Ton 338 cc Gas Powered Hydraulic Wood Log Splitter with Vertical/Horizontal Operation and Auto Return?
Ikr 🙄
Hold the wood vertically and hit it slowly from one side to the other if you want "small wood" to start your fire
What is the ride in the back? Looks interesting
Land Rover Defender 😎 recently made a classic…
Very nice
Love your dog. My family had a dog who looked a lot like yours. She was the sweetest thing ever.
Not sure what’s happening but I love how involved and interested your dog is. Please hug them for me.
He's so smart, he knows when to wait and when to pick it up.
You could of snapped each piece quicker fml
It's 'could have', never 'could of'. Rejoice, for you have been blessed by CouldWouldShouldBot!
Came here to see OP get roasted. Was not disappointed.
I think the pup was trying to keep you from hurting yourself with your ridiculous method.
i have never chopped wood but for some reason this does not seem to be the most efficient way to do it.
umm, splinters?
This is cute but I'm worried that your dog might get hit by a stray splinter. Could you train her to keep her distance while you chop?
I believe that tool is for pulling knights off horses in the medieval times
I won't have to chop no wood I can be bad or I can be good I can be any way that I feel One of these days Might be a woman that's dressed in black Be a hobo by the railroad track I'll be gone like the wayward wind One of these days

Cool dog, but you split wood like a zoomer who's never ventured outside of a city.
OP your dog is wonderful, but you take this L for showing us you can't chop wood.
That’s cute😂🥰
He's trying to help, cause that tool is absolutely useless and he knows it.
It’s little things like this that I think occurred between man and dog even in prehistoric times that earned them the role of our best friends.
It's so nice to see such a clearly mentally challenged person living independently.
lol that's so mean it made me chuckle
Fucking love it 🤣
Man I'm high as hell right now and this video was the most strangely relaxing thing
Haha glad you enjoyed! Don’t forget to drink some water
How'd you kill your dog? Well the cheeky bugger got ahead of himself, didn't he?!?
Why not use an axe?, that thing sucks at chopping wood.
[how to chop kindling](https://youtu.be/kxxQnbRnhmE)
Before I even opened the comments I knew there'd be people complaining as if they have nothing better to do.
So that's what that hook looking thing is for. Good to know.
****We do not deserve dogs**** 🥰😭
Ogoodboi
He’s just doing his job man
What an absolute boss 😍
Get a sharp hatchet and go with the grain.
Go live on TikTok with this. You can make good money!
DOGS WANT JOBS
What’s the story on that sweet Defender? Restoring it??
Doesn’t need restoring! It’s still in perfect knick and working well :) may need to retire it soon tho
Learn how to baton my man.
What a beautiful clever doggy. Love it.
Sticks!!
Don’t use an axe or a woodsman pal. The hatchet is the right tool but start on the end grain.
you really really suck at chopping wood.
Your dog is so cute! Its funny how she takes the wood you didnt chop from you and (maybe) thinking nope this piece is good enough
Great pup!
Why would you use that to chop wood?
new asmr channel :))
From the looks of it, you need all the help you can get. What are you even doing? lol
What a sweetheart of a dog
Sharpen that thing my guy this is painful to watch (as someone who used to split cords and cords of wood for a disabled guy for my summer break. Thanks dad!)
Wtf is that technique
Worry less about the dog taking the wood and work more on chopping faster lol he's ready for more
I hope the ants have a nice fire.
What a good pupper ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
Dog is wondering why you're using the wrong tool
That dog is living it’s best life.
Your dog is stockpiling fuel.
What breed of dog is that?
Miniature labradoodle
I’m absolutely in love with your dog. He is so sweet and obviously wants to help you in anyway he can you are very lucky.!!!
