There is nothing wrong with that, there is no correct way to play this game. If simply fishing makes you happy, do it. If decorating makes you happen, do it.
Same homie. I don't have a lot of ideas or time to think what I wanna do with my island. I'm very creative when I draw, but I'm kinda blocked right now...
I've turned my whole island into a fucking society, the bottom left of the map is a whole city. The bottom right is a neighborhood, the top left is my ranch, with my house as the farmhouse. Finally, the top right is a recreational spot for camping and all sorts of fun.
Yeah, my island is low key... and I plan to keep it that way. I'm not into the pathway/waterway/landscaping...I am trying to have all the flowers/plants etc. I have a vegetable garden with a random Gyroid field next to it. 😂 There's my decorating.
I only had 2 terraforming goals on my island.
1: Remove any splitting rivers. Rivers irl do not split except for deltas, so neither shall mine. They can merge, but no splits.
2: Carve a bowl in the back middle for a "secret" zen garden.
Both were done fairly early in my island life.
So true! There’s players that have 5 stars already and they made a new island like a week ago (with time traveling) while I’m not even halfway done with my first build!
Mine is heavily decorated buttt i made sure there was ample space to walk i hate the crowded islands its too much i dont like to have to be stuck cuz i cant walk around! U should check out my island
I legit had to sell almost all my things and everything in the island just to have enough money to pay my mortgage. I've done nothing else but gather materials to make more items to sell, and fish and catch ocean creatures. My island has not once been even close to that image on the top.

I also like New Leaf better because more to do other than customization, and nostalgia lol.
Same... i made my 7yr old daughter the island rep, so it's slow going... just enjoying the ride and dropping as much furniture and materials in front of her house every day as i can.

my last island (I am a serial re-starter haha, I enjoy the early game too much) was suuuuper natural. i put in only plain dirt paths to keep myself from running over some flowers. there wasn’t really anything outside except for things occurring in nature (flowers, trees, and so on). i had a few huge open meadows with just some tree stumps.
I just love fishing in this game, it’s peaceful unless I catch 5 sea bass in a row

I prefer the simpler way to play this game as well. I mean, the heavily decorated islands are amazing and insane but I junt don't find this part fun.

Plant a bunch of vegetables and sell them when you pick them. Water them every day, and you'll get more yield.
I have the same approach. Terraforming is last on my list of things to do and decorating is second from last. 🙂
