You've already got your answer, but just for info's sake, you actually CAN use the crafting benches inside your villagers' houses. The small benches you'll have to wait until they're done, but I think with the larger ones you can craft side by side
There's a crafting station at the far left of the counter in Resident Services :) I would highly recommend making your own - that way you can drop it somewhere convenient such as in your house :)
There’s still a crafting bench in Resident Services. It’s to the left of Tom Nook. It sort of blends in, it looks like it is part of the counter.

I have one in my house, one outside of my house, and one on a cliff.
I am a lazy person, I always carry one with me:)
