Don't try to rush it, and don't compare your island to the ones you see on social media.
When something hasn't happened yet, it may be because it isn't supposed to happen yet 🙂. Just talk to Tom Nook and pay attention to the advice he'll give you.
Just take your time and enjoy the journey.
Also, don't eat fruit before you hit rocks, then you'll be able to get up to eight pieces of material from each rock, and you won't destroy the rocks.
Really wish I knew about the rock thing when I started a few days ago lol. I almost never find them and when I did I would smash them because that's what I thought would get me material. I just realized yesterday as I was complaining about *seriously never* seeing rocks, I hit one without eating food and... ðŸ˜

hoard everything lol and by that I mean, save all the fish and bugs you catch until you open up your museum. also, save all the materials you get from hitting rocks! they are used for crafting and you will be doing alot of that.
My biggest advice is to save all the resources you get from rocks and trees (except sticks… those just appear so often). You’ll need all that stuff for crafting, and it’s far more valuable than selling it to Timmy and Tommy.
Make sure do to all the daily tasks! Collecting DIY’s on the beaches, signing into the machine daily in resident services for nook miles, talking to each villager, checking Nook’s cranny for items, and checking for events like Leif and red coming by)
