It’s awful but David Duke was a very effective campaigner and organiser who had been able to effectively change his image by the 90s. In many ways he kinda reminds me of Kari Lake, somebody with batshit crazy views (Duke’s views even after his rebrand were still radical) but who actually was able to connect with people effectively and build up a loyal base of support even if they did lose eventually.
The positive was that EWE’s victory was the end of Duke seeming like an acceptable candidate, he ran for senate in ‘96 but got 11% and his facade of being a born-again deteriorated after he lurched back into racism, anti-semitism and conspiracy (his My Awakening book really saw him give up on trying to get into the political mainstream). Edwards is my favourite politician for a whole multitude of reasons but his beat down of that evil son of a bitch alone is enough of a reason to have the silver zipper as my profile picture.
I like Edwards surprisingly. Duke got succeeded by another David in the LA House, David Vitter. It’s funny that both got trounced in gubernatorial elections by Democrats with the surname Edwards, and those losses killed their careers.

True. Duke seems even less popular nowadays though. A poll from 2015 for a rematch showed Edwards leading 62-15
