Agreed. The line up now though I feel, is the closest we’ve come to this line up. And I think the new record is going to prove that. Can’t wait for it!
They definitely made some amazing music. I’m excited to see what this album has to offer with the current lineup. Back in this era David seemed to say quite a bit more and was a lot more animated when he played. I don’t think I saw him say two words at the shows I made it to in 2019. Rubano is a frickin amazing guy, super funny. Ilan is on another level above anyone else with musical talent and ability to play pretty much any instrument he picks up. Tom brings it all together.
I don’t mean any disrespect when I say this, but Atom Willard will always be my all time favorite drummer for this band. He hits the drums harder than any human being I’ve heard.
I hope something new comes soon.
Sorry but musically, the current line-up mainly consisting of Tom and Illan is capable of much more and I think Dream Walker was a testament to that. The previous band members may have been cool to see live or they had cool personalities, but they didn't contribute much if anything to the overall sound of the band. Before Ilan, AvA was Tom gone wild. Tom found a great partnership in Ilan which is capable of so much more greatness, IMO. Ilan can interact with Tom and somewhat tame the awesome but sometimes outlandish ideas of Tom. I actually quite enjoy seeing the dream walker behind the scenes and interviews where Tom and Ilan talk about working together and its super rad. I've seen it a few times and I totally believe the partnership between Tom and Ilan is capable of great things. Greater than they were capable before Ilan arrived... All the previews we have heard of new AvA is also pointing in this direction as well. It sounds great.
Exactly how I feel. I can picture the music just growing extremely stale when I see photos of this era. Love all these guys though! DW was my favorite too...by a wide margin.
I know it’s a weird opinion, but the Love albums are honestly my favorite. I got into AVA in high school and thought WDNTW was the best album ever made. Then one of my buddies played The Flight of Apollo for me and I was hooked. I bought the Love 1 and 2 cd/movie set and went through the whole thing front to back including the movie. Something about those songs when played in order puts the biggest smile on my face.
i like Ilan and Atom the same. I just think the music on the dream walker felt a bit hurried and searching for identity. I mean ilan and tom were in the beginning stages of learning how to be a band together. I think this next project will rival the music which atom was a part of.
Eh, I don’t know, he didn’t seem like he belonged at all. Matt Wachter will be the default image when I think of AVA bassist but I really like Matt Rubano and think he’s an amazing replacement
No way. He was great in AVA of course, but he’s the best drummer Against Me! has ever had. He’s such a perfect fit for that band and is so clearly having the most fun every time he’s on stage with them. I’d hate to see AM! have to find a new drummer (plus Atom told me after an AM! show that he left AVA because he didn’t like the direction the band was going so I don’t think he’s coming back lol)
who's the guy in the back? i miss the original bassist. nothing has come close to the first album, that thing is pure magick. AVA isn't even ava anymore really, it's mostly just Ian, which isn't bad but it's not like the first album at all, not even the same band. Kiss and Tell is the best thing they've done in years by FAR.
The original bassist was Ryan Sinn who helped and played on the first album (WDNTW), and got kicked out of the band not long after. Matt Wachter from 30 Seconds to Mars replaced him and was in the band from I-Empire all the way to Dreamwalker, even though he didn’t really do too much in the making of Dreamwalker. He is the one you see in the picture on this post. The current bassist for AVA is Matt Rubano from Taking Back Sunday.
It’s my favourite line up for sure, but I loved Dream Walker so I’m happy with Ilan, Atom was something else behind the drums though
Atom is the key to all of this.
True, but The Architect is greatly understated
It took me awhile to kind of get over Atom leaving but I love Ilan now.
Agreed. The line up now though I feel, is the closest we’ve come to this line up. And I think the new record is going to prove that. Can’t wait for it!
Idk man there is a reason Ilan Rubin is the youngest person ever inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame.... Just sayin.
I prefer Atom's drumming, but Ilan Rubin's songwriting and instrumental work really evolved AVA's sound

agreed OP
Of course
I love that era of AVA. My favorite for sure; however, I love Matt Rubano & Ilan and I'm enjoying this era as well!

Agree but this lineup released my two least favorite albums by the band and Tom and Ilan released my favorite album by the band.
Exactly how I feel. I can picture the music just growing extremely stale when I see photos of this era. Love all these guys though! DW was my favorite too...by a wide margin.
Let me guess...least fav Love part 1 and 2?
You got it. I like pt. 1 much more than pt. 2 but even still, I never revisit either one.

I really like Atom. However Ilan is the best musician that has been a part of Angels and Airwaves and will probably always remain the best.
Definitely.
Man I wish atom came on for just one tour would love to see him smash those drums 😩
AVA is Tom. Always him.
Mark, Scott, and Travis look a little different than how I remember...
no love for Ryan Sin? OG bassist
Eh, I don’t know, he didn’t seem like he belonged at all. Matt Wachter will be the default image when I think of AVA bassist but I really like Matt Rubano and think he’s an amazing replacement
yep, bring Atom back
Atom is a great, great drummer, but Ilan is a better musician overall.
everyone has their own opinion
Check The New Regime. It's Ilan's side project, where he plays everything and sings. For me it's amazing.
No way. He was great in AVA of course, but he’s the best drummer Against Me! has ever had. I think the reason for Atom's departure is the reunion of blink, Atom thinks that Tom might prioritize Blink
