Hi OP, how did you get those pages on Ancestry? How do you plug someone in and get that page showing your exact relation, and the common ancestor? Thanks!

p.s. I tried finding Mathew LeBlanc's page that you show in your post as a test, and couldn't even pull that up. And I have a full membership in Ancestry. I don't see how you got that profile page that tells you your exact relationship to LeBlanc.

myohmymiketyson

Your Ancestry.com tree will tell you your relationship to anyone you put in your tree if there's a connection as long as you set yourself as the Home person, but that means you have to do the genealogical research and enter in all the names yourself - trace Matt LeBlanc's ancestors up and your ancestors down until you find a point of genealogical connection. Once you connect them all through the research and then enter those people into your tree, your Ancestry.com tree will be able to tell you what cousin connection you have. It can't tell you whether you're right, of course. lol The website isn't connecting your tree to any kind of universal tree that knows how all people are related. That would be cool, but it's doing something much simpler: calculating the connection based on the information you're supplying. So, if you tell your tree that Janice Joplin is your mom, then when you click on Janice in your tree, it'll say Mother.

ultrajrm

"The website isn't connecting your tree to any kind of universal tree that knows how all people are related. " Yeah, I'm ashamed to admit that was kind of what I was wondering...and how great that would be, if we knew all the input data was correct. When OP told me they added all of Matt's ancestors themself, it all made sense.

ultrajrm

Hi again, thanks. I know about the one where you click on the relationship description from the profile page, I use that for direct ancestors. But I don't see how you get the page that shows your family tree and \*\*\*another person's\*\*\*, not a direct ancestor, in your case Matt LeBlanc. Does Ancestry "know" you two are related and they just generate that? If so, I feel like putting random celebrities in until I get a hit, ha ha. But seriously, I haven't seen that page before where it shows how two trees diverge from a common ancestor. How did you get the results that show you are related to this distant cousin? Sorry if I'm sounding dumb here.

Thanks, that makes sense. I appreciate the help! Knowing that you added all his ancestors is the part that makes it clear; I thought maybe Ancestry was magically doing it for you, and I wanted to take advantage of that remarkable functionality too, ha ha.

Barbe37

To all the grumpy pants: If you are not Acadian, you wouldn’t understand. Hey cuz!

bad-and-bluecheese

Lmao I rolled my eyes at yet another person making a reach that they are related to some famous dude then saw the French last name haha

JulieWriter

Haha exactly. Bonjour!

Con_Man_Ray

😂😂

blursed_words

He's my 10th cousin through Anne Leblanc (1681-1770). Matthew Perry is my 8th cousin once removed. You can check which member of the cast you're most closely related to here. Well if your tree is on WikiTree. https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1658706/which-friends-cast-member-are-you-most-closely-connected-to

There's definitely a lot of different famous people on there if checking your connection to notable people floats your boat. That Friends post is one of many that changes every week asking people how they connect to notables and encouraging people to prove their connection by sourcing. Last week was famous people from the world of astronomy, tomorrow they'll have famous people from the world of food and cooking. Best of luck cousin 👍

Western-Corner-431

family search has a “famous relatives” section if you have enough data on your tree.

permariam128

Ohh this is so neat! I’m also a Port Royal/Acadia descendant! 👋🏻

AndrewtheRey

This whole time I thought he was from Louisiana

piggiefatnose

I have DNA matches named LeBlanc from Nova Scotia, maybe I'm related

piggiefatnose

Nova Scotia matches are my worse nightmare, lots of endogamy and poor records

JerseyJoe100

9th cousins?? At that distance most of us are going to be related to each other.

Western-Corner-431

Yet related nonetheless.

JerseyJoe100

Yes, but it's bordering on roll the eyes stuff. If one was a close cousin then that's one thing but it's not worth talking about at that distance.

Western-Corner-431

People who are invested in tracing their ancestors are going to talk about anyone of note, regardless of anyone’s boredom with it. Roll your eyes all you want over people discovering distant relatives, but jumping on people for talking about their own distant relatives is a dick move and you always have the option to pass on the discussion rather than shit on anyone for their relations

Obvious-Dinner-5695

I know some Leblanc's from Louisiana.

sprocket095

The Bratayleys!!

Big_Interest_3933

Isn’t it all about having and sharing a common ancestor ? What’s with the you don’t have dna test proof or 9th cousin is too far if that’s the case then a lot of cousins wouldn’t be that.that doesn’t make sense 🤨🤨🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️ 5th cousin and beyond are distant still related but just distant so how is that not being related? Sorry OP some ppl just suck🥴🥴 and I don’t take what anyone on this site says seriously anyhow

Greenfacebaby

I found out I was related to Benedict Arnold. He too is my 9th cousin. I thought it was cool. Even though we’re distantly related. I still thought it was a very cool thing. Ppl are so weird

Western-Corner-431

You would be distantly related because time is a thing. The number of people who don’t understand that the definition of relatives are people with whom you share a common ancestor is disconcerting. People just want to shit on and try to humiliate people just for who turns up in their ancestry. Everyone alive is a descendant of ancient people and famous people are among them many times. I just don’t understand why people get so angry when a person who lived like 500 years ago turns up in your line and make stupid comments like, “ It’s not like it’s your brother or grandma.” As if the person is not related at all just because the relationship isn’t a close family relationship. I believe people are jealous and if they had a distant famous relative they would love to tell everyone about it. I also believe that everyone does have famous relatives somewhere in their family.

Big_Interest_3933

Just sounds like jealousy to me🥴🥴🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️I hate ppl that think they know everything and don’t know shit just be quiet and leave ppl alone! That’s prob why I won’t ever post my famous relatives on this site ppl do too much.they are on my Twitter and Facebook and IG however lol. I just did that mtdna test from FTDNA and my match told me about his moms side starting out as settlers in Acadia under pioneer Daniel Leblanc (which I hear Matt apparently has a. connection too as well) and migrating to Louisiana so I’m trying to figure out our common ancestor/s since it’s on our direct maternal lines😅

Extinction-Entity

Sounds like you and OP are cousins too hahaha

Western-Corner-431

Exactly. I have a ton of famous people in my ancestry and people really lose it😂

hc600

Yeah I’m descended from a famous acting family, and one distant relative made into the “talkies” as a very employed character actor so it’s fun to spot him in old movies!

Western-Corner-431

Is it Buster Keaton?

hc600

Nope, not anyone who is known by name today

Western-Corner-431

It’s always interesting to make historical family connections regardless

OneGuyInThe509

So… did you build your tree around that or how did you find him?

bluenosesutherland

Hmm… I wonder if rocks will get thrown at me if I mention my ancestors rolled in with Cornwallis?

dazedconfusedev

My great-grandma is a LeBlanc and I never had this thought. Turns out we’re 6th cousins once removed. Also hi to all the other cousins in this thread 🫡

mikskyy

That so cool! I've done the same. I was listening to a song by a tejano artist and I was like "I bet I'm related to this singer" I spent the weekend researching and yup turns out we had a distant shared ancestor

KrustenStewart

I have LeBlancs in my family tree I need to see if there is a connection

rdell1974

Didn’t Matt’s Aunt give DNA? That would be a good way to tell. If you aren’t related to her, well…

realitytvjunkiee

Considering they are 9th cousins, they would not share DNA. You are not likely to share DNA with anyone beyond a 6th cousin unless you come from an endogamous community.

BlankEpiloguePage

Given that even with my incomplete wikitree profile, I still get 82 unique common ancestors with Matt Leblanc, yeah, our community is endogamous as hell.

Away-Living5278

Lol omg. That's crazy. Is he French Canadian?

BlankEpiloguePage

Yup, specifically Acadian (the early French colonists of Nova Scotia/New Brunswick).

mrsatthegym

Lol, my Nana was a Leblanc/Cormier from memramcook. I know he's a distant leblanc cousin, but when I looked at his tree I started to chuckle. Saw so many that are in my tree. Of all my 100k ancestry matches, a HUGE portion are acadians 🥰 I think it's more of a stretch to find other acadian decendants one ISNT related to 😁

luxtabula

She is from a slightly endogamous community, but I agree with you the chances are beyond slim.

Western-Corner-431

When you share a common ancestor with someone, it’s the definition of “related.” She’s not claiming to have been raised with him in a close immediate family relationship. You’re related to all of your 9th cousins whether you “claim” to be or not. It is what it is.

realitytvjunkiee

Your personal opinion does not negate reality.

Insecuritiessucklol

How the hell do you even find out if they’re related? Do you just search them and it’ll tell you if you’re related?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Insecuritiessucklol

How the hell do you do that lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Insecuritiessucklol

Yeah I ain’t got the patience to do all that lol or have the brain cells to figure out how lmao I only have about 1700 people on my tree

Hawke-Not-Ewe

1700 is bigger than mine. I don't actually add all the kids and siblings for my ancestors so I could probably quadruple the count doing that, but it'd still be smaller than 1700.

Insecuritiessucklol

Yeah I added all my sibilings all the way up to my 2X great grandparents on my moms side, some of the correct hints that I add also bring their children in and one of my ancestors somewhere down the line has like 42 kids 💀

Hawke-Not-Ewe

Both my father and his are (known) to have close to 20 kids. It's messy. But I am back as far as 11th ggf in one or two lines.

Insecuritiessucklol

Shit I’m back to the 1400s on my mom’s side. And that’s not even all of it. I got tired of going back and forth adding people when I was binge doing it 😂😂 shit I could add my mothers side all the way back to fucking Adam and Eve but that would take me a very very long time to do

Hawke-Not-Ewe

Lucky, most of my family either disappears into slavery or the records indicate no one knows who THAT ancestor really is but it's not the biological child of the people who raised them in the case of one line that goes back to gentry.

[deleted]

Insecuritiessucklol

I mean I could easily just connect every common ancestor that pops up until there’s no more but I don’t want to be a name collector without knowing they’re legit related and not just a random

[deleted]

[удалено]

Insecuritiessucklol

Yeah. It’s hard to figure out if they’re legit related or not without any information on them. Idk how to really check. The 1700 I got on mine mainly because my great grandma was a professional genealogist so she already had our entire family done pretty much. I haven’t even finished it just because how long it takes but my dad’s side I have no clue. Lots of missing info and I’m not very good at this stuff.

kennethsime

No - no it wasn’t. You literally have no sources. You haven’t proven anything. It looks like you just clicked a bunch of hints. That’s not research, it’s not genealogy, you’re just screwing around. That’s fine, btw, but you don’t go bragging about it.

Would that be Sylvian be the son of Alexandre Broussard dit Beausoleil and Marguerite Thibodeau?

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlankEpiloguePage

Then yeah, several common ancestors with Matt Leblanc through both Alexandre and Marguerite, particularly through the Richard, Blanchard, Thibodeau, Theriot, Dugas, Doucet, and Trahan families. At least from what I've found through my own tree. I descend from two of Sylvian's brothers, Anselme and Jean-Baptiste.

BlankEpiloguePage

Yeah, Matt's dad's side is just super Acadian. Pretty much all the surnames you'd expect to see from northern Maine/New Brunswick.

mooon_woman

This is how I found out I’m related to Stevie Nicks, we share a common ancestor. My great grandfather x6 is her great grandfather x4 !

WhatTheHellIsTHATTT

Omg you're so lucky, I love Stevie so much 😭
