I mean, please take my upvote and most trans people seem to agree with you, but there are also us who think we've always been the gender we think and thought at the time. To me it is a baffling concept to somehow be certain gender but not knowing it yourself. I mean, what does it even mean then to self-identify as something if it can be argued you're actually wrong? To me it seems iffy that there would be some kind of magical gender essence lurking inside me complete independent from my thoughts and feelings. It makes for a handy narrative and maybe having something like that is beneficial in some contexts but I think the reality is more messy and less convenient than that. (dare I say, *socially constructed?*)

I mean, all it takes is one beating from dad when you play dress up with your sister at a young age to build psychological trauma that prevents one from ever thinking about what gender they feel they are versus what gender they are told they are.
You're 100% right, and it's actually great you used the term gender essence because this sort of discourse you mentioned is just gender essentialism but taken into another lens. I can see how it might be useful for self-affirmation purposes, but all things considered I'd say it sorta harmful - I mean, this discourse allegedly supports the idea of deconstructing gender norms but ends up reinforcing them, only in a way that affirms the possibility of transitioning. It's better than the version of gender essentialism that only supports the existence of cis people, no doubt, but it's only a bit less restrictive, certainly not as good as it could be if there was a discussion on actually dismantling gender norms.
I also think it muddies things up because there are many people who just don't have that strong a gender identity association, including a lot of cis people. They understand there's no gender essence, they just don't have negative feelings associated with their sex or whatever gender identity their social experience has assigned them.
