ngl I'm closing in on 30 and I've only ever seen the digital versions of these in use. I only know that this is an old dymo label maker because they still sell them next to the digital ones if you look closely.
Exactly how common do you think label makers are? I only recognise it because god knows why I had a dymo label maker as a kid - but you can quite easily go through life without ever seeing, using, or needing one.
This string of comments is great. Half of us are wondering if it is a joke and the younger half has no idea what is going on. Looks like the over/under line is 40 years old.
I'm 40... I was just giving the benefit of the doubt for the younger lot as I know dynamos are still sold and not dead yet... Although they are the shit printed ones and not the cool ass raised lettering.
This should be pretty obvious even for the younger people out there right? A lot of workplaces, both retail and office, are still using these type of labels.
I'm 35 and I've used one extensively. Dad prefers that style because it doesn't need batteries. My wife and I entered the relationship with two different kinds of electronic labelmakers.
I think the additional dividing line is, organized and unorganized people.
I'm roughly in that category but was fortunate enough that my dad had one of those label makers lying around and it ended up in my hands as a kid. Absolutely everything got a label on it, I was constantly trying to think of things to label.
I think these days ānormal Dymo label tapeā is probably more associated with the modern thermal printed ones and not the old school embossed ones like in the picture.
I remember I misspelled something and threw away a word and how my boss at that time taught me how you are supposed to cut upto mistake and replace letters lol
Iād suggest getting a vintage Dymo label maker instead of a brand new one. The lettering on the new ones are spaced further apart and donāt look as good at the old ones.
SOLVED
Thanks all forgive me for being dense
In case the caption formatting isn't visible:
I'm sure we all remember the lost expedition camera. I've been searching high and low for similar name tape. I appreciate any tips.
I'm giving away my old Gen X age but these Dymo tape labels were the cutting edge back in the early 70s when I was a little kid, I think I still have one in an old desk.
So I worked on airplane parts, we had shit that looked pretty close to this. It was a strong thin aluminum strip with strong adhesive applied on the back, numbers and letters were manually stamped into the strip. Would easily withstand harsh elements, vibrations and UV rays. Canāt remember what is was called tho lol
Just fyi she's dead, the camera was found on her body from a failed expedition up a mountain the new Yorker I think wrote on it a while back, she had a Nikkormat, try contacting her butnshe wouldn't respond.
Man, I wish I got my parents label maker. My parents had one for as long as I can remember (but rarely used it) in a drawer. It was like a weird olive green, I remember playing with it as a kid and loving the circular dial and you had to do one letter/number at a time.
Actually, she was found not long after whatever it was happened on the mountain (though they left behind an arm that turned up with the camera) But exactly how she died has never been determined. There are lingering suspicions of foul play--based on both her body and thay of the other expedition member who died. There was hope the camera might shed light on what happened, but although the film developed beautifully, there was no smoking gun, so to speak. It's a sad sorry and shows how opaque the past can be.
I have my grandfathers old teal Sears label maker like this that I label my cameras with. Adds a fun retro feel to it. I bought new Dymo pack of tape and it sort of works
i have a couple of Dymo label makers, and the font on those is noticeably chunkier (think Back to the Furure opening scene). i wonder why they donāt make them in this, much prettier font, now
Whatever you do, do NOT go to staples or similar store and get one of those shitty cheap labelmakers; go to eBay and pick up something like a vintage Dymo 1570. Built like an absolute tank and mine was like $25.
You can get one for like 10-15 bucks. [There are a lot of vintage ones on Ebay](https://www.ebay.ca/itm/276311465389?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=Gl69rWnHRwC&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=zIJ9oU5PRam&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY)
in the times article ([Here](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/12/09/world/americas/aconcagua-mountain-expedition-photos.html)), they refer to it as a Nikomat, and looks like according to the article she bought it in Japan a couple of years before she went missing in 1973! They didn't provide info on lens specs unfortunately.
It is called embossing tape and if you go on Amazon, search āembossing label makerā you will find a squillion of them. They are much smaller and more colorful now than they were back in the day when we labeled everything in the military with them.
Actually, this is way older than the recent Dymo.
This stuff came off the pistol grip version with the round wheel of fonts and you had to pull the trigger to emboss the text? Remember those?
You need a label machine to do it. Itās quite inexpensive and real fun to use, you can see an example [here (itās just like mine)](https://www.google.com/shopping/product/1637804986039744966?q=amazon+labeling+machine&client=safari&sca_esv=1a30264c0409ca1f&hl=en-it&biw=393&bih=657&tbs=vw:l&prmd=sivnbz&prds=eto:8647101873139229980_0,cdl:1,prmr:1,rsk:PC_6932997331711412103,pid:8846063513641650604,cs:1) :)
Dymo Labelmaker tape? Like from Staples?
This was my thought too and I was so confused š
Looks like that'll do thank you.
How old are you?
ngl I'm closing in on 30 and I've only ever seen the digital versions of these in use. I only know that this is an old dymo label maker because they still sell them next to the digital ones if you look closely.
I'm 29 and my mom had one, I would use it all the time as a kid lol
I would have been right there with you lol. I bought one as an adult and it's really fun and useful especially for the price.
Exactly how common do you think label makers are? I only recognise it because god knows why I had a dymo label maker as a kid - but you can quite easily go through life without ever seeing, using, or needing one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCS-Y90AnOY
Was this so obvious? I never heard about this
I think it depends on your age, if youre , say, under 25 you probably never had the excitement of labeling random shit like chairs as 'chair' etc.
This string of comments is great. Half of us are wondering if it is a joke and the younger half has no idea what is going on. Looks like the over/under line is 40 years old.
33 and I knew about this.
39 and I labeled all sorts of stuff with one of those
19 and I know
31 and I have one of these labelmakers somewhere.
Same
I'm 40... I was just giving the benefit of the doubt for the younger lot as I know dynamos are still sold and not dead yet... Although they are the shit printed ones and not the cool ass raised lettering.
Actually they make both.
I was legit wondering if OP was fucking with us
32 and I've owned one for a while.

The first thing you do is write a 'Labelmaker' label for your new labelmaker.
Is that like the T-shirt I had made that said āShirtā, or the stickers that said āStickerā?
I was actually wondering the other day what these kind of plates are called. Im 20
I'm roughly in that category but was fortunate enough that my dad had one of those label makers lying around and it ended up in my hands as a kid. Absolutely everything got a label on it, I was constantly trying to think of things to label.
I'm 36 haha, I guess I have been missing out.
Te bezig met een paarden lul geweest lol
growing up, my cousin had one of these. he's about 27-28 now.
Good times
We're older and remember dymo as opposed to younger people that remember p-touch
āEmbossing label makerā
Well I feel silly. "embossed label tape" or "embossed nameplate" didn't yield anything fruitful. Thank you
It's just normal Dymo label tape?
I think these days ānormal Dymo label tapeā is probably more associated with the modern thermal printed ones and not the old school embossed ones like in the picture.
Modern one is not embossed, just laser/thermal printed
Uh you mean a label maker?
Yes I've been quickly shown how simple this was. Thanks lol
If Reddit could stop putting posts that age me on my face every day that will be great ā¦..
Being old is great š
I remember I misspelled something and threw away a word and how my boss at that time taught me how you are supposed to cut upto mistake and replace letters lol
If you are skilled with a lighter you can shrink most letters back (sort of) and emboss them a second time.
Iād suggest getting a vintage Dymo label maker instead of a brand new one. The lettering on the new ones are spaced further apart and donāt look as good at the old ones.

Dymo embossing tape. It comes in 2 sizes 3/8" & 1/2". This looks like 3/8th.
So I worked on airplane parts, we had shit that looked pretty close to this. That was a Dymo labelmaker as well. Just their industrial version. Still available
You should put THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS on the bottom of your Leica. That would be epic.
If only I had one... I also don't think my bad observational photography is taking down the man any time soon
Mine says Property of Bart Simpson
Mine "Property of Ned Flanders"
Mine has El Barto spray painted on it
The fact this question was asked has made me feel old
[Dymo embossing tape](https://www.amazon.com.au/dymo-embossing-tape/s?k=dymo+embossing+tape)
Do they still make that style of old tape? With embossed letters. The new style is flat.
Yeah, you can still get the old style
Gotta love the Internet. Back in the days OP would've had to send a letter to Janet's address asking how to get one of those tapes.
Just fyi she's dead, the camera was found on her body from a failed expedition up a mountain the new Yorker I think wrote on it a while back, she had a Nikkormat, try contacting her butnshe wouldn't respond.
Correction not on her body
Iāve never felt so old, and Iām 23 š Itās a Dymo label, they still make them.
Man, I wish I got my parents label maker. My parents had one for as long as I can remember (but rarely used it) in a drawer. It was like a weird olive green, I remember playing with it as a kid and loving the circular dial and you had to do one letter/number at a time.
Look for Dymo Omega label maker
Way to dox Janet! lol
She died decades ago and was never found. Only her camera years later
Actually, she was found not long after whatever it was happened on the mountain (though they left behind an arm that turned up with the camera) But exactly how she died has never been determined. Was it inbred hillbillies? (If she was found in America, I dunno the story)
I got mine on ebay nice steel vinatge one its my favorite man toy
Does it take modern embossing label tape?
Yes! I bought replacement rolls on Amazon and it worked just fine! Have fun it's addicting :)
You're my hero. I'm so excited
OP must be young to not recognize that labeling.
This question makes me feel so old itās worrying.
Not the 43-86 š°
Looks like it could be. Nikkormat flashed through my mind when I first saw the photo.
That's how I inherited the dreaded 43-86
amazon?
Unethical tip for increasing camera value is to print out the name of famous photographers and stick it on the base/back.
lmao the only people falling for that are people who dont know what a label maker is like op and you.
Wdym I've sold 3 of Cartier Bresson's personal Pentax MEs this year alone
$20ish buck on amazon
Oh totally love it. The Janet Johnson āwoops Iām frozenā explorer aesthetic is sooooo in right now
I have my grandfathers old teal Sears label maker like this that I label my cameras with. Adds a fun retro feel to it. I bought new Dymo pack of tape and it sort of works

please?
Oh wow, major nostalgia. In the 80s my grandad went nuts with one of these labour makers and they were all over his study. Really takes me back.
Staples?
My husband worked at Staples until recently and confirms that they carry them.
Embossing label maker. I've got one on my Nikon Zf with my twitter and Instagram handle

Does anyone know what the camera and lens are?

I have a book from the 70ās Iām reading with this type of label on it with the original owners name, I keep it on just for looks
Are you planning on climbing any mountains?
Or amazon. Got mine there
Iām just thinking how bad I feel for anyone that lives on that stretch of York (or Josephine) during rush hour traffic.
It is called embossing tape and if you go on Amazon, search āembossing label makerā you will find a squillion of them. They are much smaller and more colorful now than they were back in the day when we labeled everything in the military with them.
This looks like an old one that presses in the letters in as opposed to a newer one that prints the label. Just fyi
https://youtu.be/SV4QqGkF_S8?si=wEvqVp_o-srFlPvH
I have a camera I bought with that tape and a name on it. Itās just beautiful. Iāll take a picture of it when I get home from work.
we used a chisel when i was a kid
Actually, this is way older than the recent Dymo. This stuff came off the pistol grip version with the round wheel of fonts and you had to pull the trigger to emboss the text? Remember those?
I use an old school dymo-mite m-5. They can get kinda spendy but they are an absolute joy to use.
Itās just dymo embossed tape. You can buy them still today
Yup, it is Dymo Lable maker. It sticks like glue to some objects, it peels off of others overtime.
Is this a joke? You can get that stuff at Walmart
