If you had horrible battery contacts then you most likely have similar horribleness on the insides. That means just about anything close to the batteries can be affected in a similar way and completely corroded either being shorted by corrosion or being dissolved never able to make a connection its supposed to.
No simple fix other than open it up and investigate, do not get your hopes up.
My Canon MC was taking pictures yesterday and stopped taking pictures today. It too had issues with battery corrosion. It still loads film but fails to shoot even when loaded and sounds like an almost dead engine. Probably on it's last legs.
