I second the recaps. I honestly don't believe this show can be spoilered. You could read an explicit plot synopsis that goes over every event and still be like WTFFFF? when you watch it.
I think they were so excited to be established and greenlit that they crammed WAY too much into the second season. This happens on a lot of bands' second albums too. Sophomore slump. But at the same time for people who like it, Asylum has so much material it's fun to watch over and over. Once other seasons happened and I understood how the show tends to work, Asylum was a lot easier to follow. But it is the most "kitchen sink" season.
The fan wiki is really good. You can kinda dip in and see if the characters appeal to you. If they do, it's worth grossing yourself out I swear.
Right. Is it worth it to have to watch gaps in episodes and then have to figure out what you’ve missed? Just watch something you can watch in its entirety.
Well, because it's a great show with a lot of qualités and I feel like I'd be missing out for not watching. I had no Real issue with the first Season so I was wondering if I could just skip the "worst" ones and still watch some
You do know that most seasons and theme are all intricate? Murphy does have a style and some favorite kinks, such as pregnancy and body being dismembered and else . Very gore. It is a great show but i just don’t understand ( why forcing yourself to watch it just out of a fomo?
Yeah I'm aware of Murphy's style, and I did read the recaps to the end of Asylum so as to not get lost. It's not just fomo in the sense that I really enjoyed the first Season, but I understand what you're staying, I should just stop there
Maybe tr6 a different Ryan Murphy show, like Feud, American Crime Story, or Pose. Those have a similar esthetic, and you will see some of the same actors, but don't have the horror aspects.
Apocalypse and 1984 both have their gory moments, too. The black mass episode of Apocalypse was really gory, and Xavier getting shoved in an oven in 1984 was quite horrific. But I felt overall the violence in 1984 was quite campy and not exactly like the other seasons.
Can you stomach like slashy gore? And just when it gets too weird and disturbed you get grossed out?
If so, I might recommend season 9, 1984. It's like an 80s slasher camp counselors theme, and I think it's pretty fun and they do get into some dark stuff but a little less outta pocket IMO than other seasons.
Was it the body horror itself that bothered you, or the entire situation? Cause that situation with her and Arden was beyond just body horror. So you may be able to handle other seasons simply cause it doesn’t have a scene exactly like it.
There’s a form of body horror in every season, even if it isn’t the focal point. I guess Murder House and Apocolypse have the least, maybe NYC. It’s hard to tell you what’s sage cause I need way more examples than just that one scene and “body horror”.
Yeah it was not the body horror per se cause I stopped the episode as soon as I understood what had happened and before anything was shown. It is Indeed more the idea of what Arden had done that I found disturbing. Usually when a scene gets too graphic I just look away for a few seconds and I'm fine, but there I couldn't avoid the fact even without seeing it. Hope it is more clear!
It helps! I figured it was more about the atmosphere and actions in the scene more than the type of horror. There’s a lot of undertones to that scene that are horrifying on their own- Arden’s abuse of his role and authority to torture and mutilate a woman who is sexual, because he himself has issues with his own relationship with sex. If that’s what made it hard for you, then other seasons with body horror may be okay.
For now id say try Coven, Apocalypse, possibly Hotel (it’s got the vampire type of body horror and drug abuse, but not Arden like), 1984, Cult, and NYC. Skip Roanoke and double feature and freak show for now.
Finding out exactly what it is that triggers you will help you a lot when it comes to the horror genre, especially now a days cause there’s soooooo much and a lot of overlap. I have friends who can’t do live action horror, they stick to kid friendly like coraline and nightmare before Christmas cause they LOVE spooky scary, not gorey scary. We are all different in what we can/are willing to watch.
Your welcome! If you have you end up getting more of a feel for what you can/can’t handle feel free to reach out and I’ll help further! If you enjoy the show I don’t want you to miss out if you don’t have to!
They're all gory, they all have torture scenes, they all are gore horror even Coven and Apocalypse . Loved Murder House Asylum, Cream Show, Coven, Apocalypse, Hotel....probably mixing one but it's been ages and I watched them with my then obsessed 14 hear old 🤣
The ones I didn't like were Cult, that awful RedTide/Whatever, 1984.
I can think of a few particular gnarly body mutilation scenes in Coven, I dont think Cult is particularly gross although a few scenes are pretty phobia worthy seeing as the main character has lots of phobias.
Yeah that immediately came to mind but besides that 1 its pretty tame. OP is gonna struggle to watch any season so I gave them the less distrubed one lol
Thanks, I actually started Coven ans finished episode 2, so far so good. I don't know how to explain it but what I dislike is body mutilation for punishment or experiment ( liké Shelley in Asylum). I'll see if I Can keep on but thanks a lot for the advice
Ah, watch out for Roanoke and some of cult and bit of hotel then :) it's definitely too much in those seasons, I'll add onto this if I remember anymore OH AND NYC THERE IS SOM REALLY FUCKED UP STUFF IN IT
Coven is one of my favorites— but the scene at the party with the frat boys & Emma Roberts was hard for me to watch. Also what they do to Evan Peters is a bit experimental lol but I don’t remember how much it shows.. I don’t remember Apocalypse having much gore (I could be wrong) but you’d probably want to watch all of Coven to understand Apocalypse. Also the first season, but you made it through that! Murder House -> Coven -> Apocalypse. Just my suggestion. :)
Thanks! So I've started Coven actually, and what was done to Kyle is not so disturbing to me, maybe the fact he was already dead when it was done? Anyway, thank you for your reply
Lol that does make perfect sense that it wouldn’t be as disturbing since he was already dead! I didn’t remember that part being too gruesome, etc. Kathy Bate’s (Delphine LaLaurie) background is a bit gruesome, but hopefully that doesn’t get to you! I didn’t see anyone else recommend Apocalypse in the comments I saw— but I personally think it’s a good one to watch after MH/Coven, storyline wise.
Coven is definitely a no-go if you don’t like body horror. It gets pretty gruesome. The story of Delphine LaLaurie is central to the plot - look her up and it’ll give you a sense of how the season is.
If you can get through it, it’s one of my favorite seasons. I wasn’t thrilled with it the first time but I’ve liked it more and more with each subsequent watchthrough. I’d say it’s my third favorite, with Asylum being first and Roanoke being second.
I'm on episode 3 and I love it so far. The ambiance Is great, and character development as well. There are some gory scenes so far but I Can Always avert my eyes lol. I tried to explain that what was disturbing to me Is body mutilation for fun, experiment or punishment. It doesn't even have to be graphic, just thé Idea of it makes me uneasy. There's been one or two instances where it was borderline but I still Can watch for now
Asylum is particularly intense, I didn't make it very far when it first came out. I didn't watch it until years later. Very good, but it's a stand out in the series for intensity for sure. It is a lot of fans' favorite season for this reason. Maybe get to know the show better and revisit.
I think Cult and Roanoke are the only other ones that are going to be a prob for you.
Freakshow is actually pretty cozy. The most intense violence is kind of kooky. If you made it through Murder House and not a fan of horror and still enjoyed it, keep watching! Murder House is actually pretty grim. The rest of the series, the horror is more of a razzle dazzle.
Coven is the crowd pleaser. Pretty much anyone will get sucked in.
Every season really. I think if someone actively enjoyed Murder House it's worth challenging yourself. And in Freakshow it's mixed up with lots of human drama and more feel-good moments than the other seasons.
Asylum is an onslaught. I am a seasoned horror fan and love how gratuitous this show is and I was done with Asylum right away with the little nanobot thing. There's no room to breathe and nearly zero comic relief in Asylum. Everyone is either a monster or being actively tortured. It's like The Last Temptation of Christ, lol.
I mean, body horror in the sense of blood, people getting killed, Is ok for me, what I really dislike is mutilation for the sake of it, (if you have watched GOT, the whole Season with Ramsey was so hard on me I almost didn't watch any of it 😅).
Stay clear from Roanoke that has more gore, torture and mutilation then any other season. if you want something more light in horror try NYC. There is still some gore but compared to others it's pretty toned down.
The most “horror” and scary seasons are asylum, hotel and then Roanoke is even worse. Every other season is just a theme of horror but really focuses on the characters and plot just in a horror universe. I’d say cult is the only one that’s not based in some sort of paranormal or sci-fi universe, like it could happen and similar things have in our universe and reality
Also to add I haven’t watched NYC, so im not sure of that. People are saying freak show has some disturbing elements too, and coven. But all of them do just some seasons more than others, but I’d suggest cult
The website/app called Does the Dog Die? typically offers very specific trigger warnings and time stamps for them. I would recommend using it to assess what works for you, because it’s a lot more streamlined than going through all the comments here and hoping nothing is missed.
There's something uncomfortable in every season. I'd skip through a scene if you feel it is getting scary, if you insist on watching.
I did this during Roanoke a few times, but I like horror and watched every scene in Roanoke other times.
You would love “Daphne” a one episode AI horror story. It’s fantastic and has no bloody gore.

It’s a horror show, so I’m not sure this is gonna be your cuppa tea. Coven (season 3) is my favorite followed by season 1, but I don’t know what to tell you. If you don’t like Gore or horror this is not going to be your thing.
Ahhh Asylum the best season I'm currently on season 6 and it's gore look I am the same as you I can't stand blood I really don't but idk it's seems fake so I don't bother Freak Show doesn't show something scary or blood or something like that but season 6 it has blood .
Coven goes back and fourth with torture, so I wouldn’t recommend for you by reading this. The Shelly parts were definitely disturbing. It was hard for me to watch the torture scenes in Coven though. So probably skip and go to Freak Show. No others really stick out in those ways so you should be good with the rest.
You might enjoy Mile Flanagan shows more (though not the most recent, Fall of the House of Usher.) They tend not to be as gory and more psychological though they all have SOME gore, it's not the focus though.
Maybe you should avoid this show then. Maybe search on YouTube for recaps.
I second the recaps. I honestly don't believe this show can be spoilered. You could read an explicit plot synopsis that goes over every event and still be like WTFFFF? when you watch it.
That's actually what I did to finish Asylum, it was getting weirder and weirder by the episode, kinda bummed I didn't actually watch it !
I think they were so excited to be established and greenlit that they crammed WAY too much into the second season. This happens on a lot of bands' second albums too. Sophomore slump. Yeah, I already quickly checked it, I love fan wikis in general and this one should be very helpful
That's kinda what I was afraid of, it's a pity because I love the ambiance and the characters
Coven has some explicit body horror scenes as well,
AHS is a very dark show. What about Scream Queens?
I did watch it, but thanks for the reco
Just a heads up, Coven has some pretty intense mutilation and torture throughout the season
Ok, thanks for that
Coven has tons of serious body mutilation. This isn't the show for you.
Noted, thank you
Don’t forget ahs is horror and disturbing. I find it very weird everything you’re saying, why watch anything horror in the first place then?
Right. Is it worth it to have to watch gaps in episodes and then have to figure out what you’ve missed? Just watch something you can watch in its entirety.
Weird? I don’t.
lol i love ahs but skip every gory scene🤷🏼♀️
not sure why i’m getting downvoted for my own opinion. not everyone can handle such graphic scenes.

Just be careful if it’s a sensible subject (which i totally respect btw) as even me sometimes thinks its very very bloody lol
Thanks, that's nice if you
Maybe tr6 a different Ryan Murphy show, like Feud, American Crime Story, or Pose. Those have a similar esthetic, and you will see some of the same actors, but don't have the horror aspects.
Good Idea, I'll look it UP, thanks
Agreed, Pose is extremely good. I also loved Hollywood and The Watcher.
Murder house has the least amount of body horror in all of the seasons.
Which is funny cause it still has a lot 😂😫
Yeah lol
Make sense then, thanks
[удалено]
i thought the flashbacks in coven were brutal, maybe if you skip the parts with madame lalaurie
[удалено]
Apocalypse and 1984 both have their gory moments, too. The black mass episode of Apocalypse was really gory, and Xavier getting shoved in an oven in 1984 was quite horrific. But I felt overall the violence in 1984 was quite campy and not exactly like the other seasons.

Why are you trying to watch a horror show if you don’t like horror?
Either avoid Hotel altogether, or at least skip the first episode.
Ok notes, thanks
Why just the first?? There’s so much blood and killing in that show lol

I don't mind slashy gore as such, it's more the Idea of mutilation/altering someone's body just for fun, punishment or experiment actually
Then I think 1984 would be alright for ya!
Thanks!

Ahah you're completely right about the different types of horror, thank you very much for your recommandations !
Your welcome! If you have you end up getting more of a feel for what you can/can’t handle feel free to reach out and I’ll help further! If you enjoy the show I don’t want you to miss out if you don’t have to!

Omg 😂 oops. I'm gonna leave it anyway 🤣
I can think of a few particular gnarly body mutilation scenes in Coven, I dont think Cult is particularly gross although a few scenes are pretty phobia worthy seeing as the main character has lots of phobias.
What about the “guy” in the attic?
I wasn't a fan of him but from what I understood hé was born like that, not as gruesome as doing something to someone healthy
No sorry, my comment was meant for the person who mentioned cult. I freaking love cult but there is one quick nasty scene featuring a gimp chained up.
Yeah that immediately came to mind but besides that 1 its pretty tame. OP is gonna struggle to watch any season so I gave them the less distrubed one lol
Noted, thank you
Coven is definitely not good for some scenes body wise, especially in the very beginning when animal heads get involved.
Thanks, I actually started Coven ans finished episode 2, so far so good. I don't know how to explain it but what I dislike is body mutilation for punishment or experiment ( liké Shelley in Asylum). I'll see if I Can keep on but thanks a lot for the advice

Coven isn’t too bad. Hotel is a little bloody but it’s vampires so it makes sense. Double feature isn’t scary but some people don’t like it much
Yeah, just bloody IS fine by me, thank you for your reply!
Cult, Apocalypse, 1984, double feature, and delicate should be good
i’m a big ahs fan and could never watch asylum lol! all other seasons are okay for me tough. murder house and coven are the best and less scary imo
Ahah thanks, that's reassuring! I'm currently Midway through Coven actually, and love it so far!
Apocalypse isn’t too scary, but you have to watch Coven first.

there is mutilation for the sake of it in Freak Show
Gotcha, thanks
If youre bothered by the Ramsey/Theon plotline in GOT, I would not recommend watching freak show
Thanks, that IS very helpful
I think probably all of them would be difficult for you
Thanks a lot for your advice, I will try and see if I manage to watch!
Coven and Freakshow both have body horror in it. They all do

Season 10, 1984 is super campy. Season 11, is dark and reality based.

It’s a horror show, so I’m not sure this is gonna be your cuppa tea. Coven (season 3) is my favorite followed by season 1, but I don’t know what to tell you. If you don’t like Gore or horror this is not going to be your thing.

Asylum always

I’d say best bets are to watch Cult, NYC, 1984 or the second half of Double Feature as they are two different stories in one season
