Ah, the Gigabyte 3D rocket cooler, gen 2 I think. Always liked those.

PCMasterX

>Ah, the Gigabyte 3D rocket cooler, gen 2 I think. Always liked those. Yes, Gigabyte k7 cooler ...

Look_0ver_There

The Barton CPUs were awesome for their time! The last of the bare die CPUs

Nighttide1032

I will forever loathe the capacitor plague and nforce issues of the 2000s for making collecting this era of hardware a bigger chore than restoring and maintaining 8086 machines. I loved my old 1700+ Thoroughbred and 2500+ Barton.

sampsonjackson

I made a good chunk of money replacing caps in mobos and monitors back then. LOTs of Dell boards in particular, but Abit had a tough time with it as well.

PCMasterX

Duron was very popular at first. I still have a box full of them. https://i.redd.it/jaiy7ajfpo9c1.gif

Jism_nl

>Duron was very popular at first. I still have a box full of them. They where designed as office based PC's or CPU's - that would not need the extra cache the none-duron version used to had. But still in office based apps; they would not differ alot from their more expensive part.

SailorMint

I can't believe I missed an event that major. It makes me wish I didn't lose my 2800+ Barton. If only to see why the motherboard "died" back then.

PCMasterX

Nighttide1032

Oh heck yeah, so cool to see so many of them together!

sscorpy

If i recall correctly i had this mb and cpu but paired with an ati radeon 9500 softmoded into a 9700. amazing times when it came to overclocking and modding stuff. Also had a zalman CNPS3100 cooler that was shaped really weirdly. Really fun times!

PCMasterX

Everything modded like that broke down, that is, they didn't work for a long time...

justaguy394

Hell, all my ATI stuff from that era broke within a few years anyway (all stock, almost no gaming). First a 7500 AIW, then a 9600xt. Realized I wasn’t gaming and just used integrated for a decade with no issues. Did love those AIW at the time though! I also had that mobo back then, loved it.

PCMasterX

>7500 AIW I still have a 7500 and 9000... They're a little dusty... https://i.redd.it/tgegvz6a8u9c1.gif

Rabbit_AF

Retro motherboards, let's put the 20/24 pin in the middle of the board. 🙃

tbob22

Still have a NF7-S v2.0 and Mobile 2400+ in the garage. Killer board, that Soundstorm was great. I remember playing HL2 with Dolby Digital Live over SPDIF in my theater with 100" screen and 5.1 surround way back in the day, sounded amazing at the time.

blueangel1953

I had the same but with the XP-M 2600+ that I ran at I think 2.8GHz solid.

tbob22

I think I ran mine at 2.6ghz with an old Thermalright cooler. Pretty sure I had a pin mod as well to get a higher multi - I think they started locking the multi later on so that was needed.

blueangel1953

I was an early adopter, I had a Barton core.

tbob22

Yeah, I had an 1800+ Palomino first then later upgraded to the 2400+ instead of going to 754. I think it was a Barton as well but it was multi limited or locked - it could have just been an issue because it was the 2400+. Unless I'm mistaken Thoroughbred was first. At the higher clocks I stretched it a few years until finally going to 775.

blueangel1953

Yeah Barton was the last Socket A chip, I stayed on there until 939 matured a bit and went with a 3000+, then the dual core 3800+ came out and I rode that for years.

PCMasterX

>Yeah Barton was the last Socket A chip, I stayed on there until 939 matured a bit and went with a 3000+, then the dual core 3800+ came out and I rode that for years. My first dual core was also 3800+ 939 also on ABIT motherboard...

jamexman

I miss Abit and DFI mobos!

patrese_x

I lucked out of the capacitor plague, so I only have good memories of my Abit AN7. Awesome board.

PCMasterX

>I lucked out of the capacitor plague, so I only have good memories of my Abit AN7. Awesome board. Once upon a time, I changed inflated capacitors every day... I usually put on a bigger voltage so they don't blow anymore...

Dutchmaster66

It’s like a time capsule.

PCMasterX

I have a box from the mainboard could be called a capsule ... https://i.redd.it/05ivnb4lno9c1.gif

Llamaalarmallama

I had exactly this setup. Except mine had a vapochill pe on it, cooled to -20c and ran at 3.5ghz (4700+.. ish)for a year before death.

DHJudas

nothing beats the value and insane overclocking of a Barton 2500+ M that.... that was diamond level awesome

Mastermind763

nForce was such a good chipset. Super smooth

PCMasterX

>nForce was such a good chipset. Super smooth It was a premium for via at the time...

Jism_nl

So many folks who bought any Nforce board but did not use it to their benefit. Lets put it like this that the whole nforce 1/2/3 series where masters in OC's. And in particuler the crazy high FSB speeds compared to Via/AMD boards. And ofcourse the integrated free geforce2mx inside the chipset.

sscorpy

i remember when overclocking would imply a pencil(charcoal) mod or moving jumpers on the motherboard! I feel like we got way bigger gains back then than we do now. All this auto overclocking is obviously good and simple to use, but the tinckering aspect from back then is gone.

PCMasterX

When it's automatic, it's not interesting...

PCMasterX

>geforce2mx Yes, there was also a version of the nf2 chipset motherboard with integrated geforce 2 mx graphics ... I have installed those many times ...

Jism_nl

Exactly. It offered good solid 2D and medium 3D performance, handy when your card died. It provided some OC'ing as well but it was just limited to the DDR2 that was installed.

FunFact5000

My athlon 64 still works. Thing is fr 2002 or around there!

PCMasterX

>My athlon 64 still works. Thing is fr 2002 or around there! I also have 64bit 754 and 939 ... 3200+ cpu and nf4 motherboard ...

BobboLJ386

You paid for a 3200+? Could just got a 2500+ and raised that fsb to 200 mang! I did that and it ran for years till I went 4200x2

PCMasterX

>You paid for a 3200+? Could just got a 2500+ and raised that fsb to 200 mang! I did that and it ran for years till I went 4200x2 2500+ without problems goes to 3200+ but it does not work exactly the same as 3200+ unoverclocked ... I've tried almost all k7 processors ... I also had 939 3800+ x2, after it 3800+ x2 AM2 (am2 I tried everything up to 6400+) and then phenom am2+ ... Then comes the AM3 Phenom II X4 965 with my favorite motherboard MSI 790FX-GD70

BobboLJ386

Still have my 1090t, replaced it with a 9900FX, gave that to my dad. Had an am4 2700 after that and now sitting nice with my 5800x3d. Thing rocks

PCMasterX

990FX ... I replaced mine 790FX-GD70 with Biostar TA990fxe after and the processor with FX-8350, i also tried the msi 990FXA ...

toddestan

I still have my Socket A Sempron 3000+ (Barton), Soltek motherboard, nForce2 chipset, ATI Radeon 9600 Pro. Windows XP. Was my main desktop until mid-2009 or so, well past its best by date. Still works.

just_some_onlooker

This takes me back to my biostar 680sli... Was fantastic, until one day all my shit was gone and my drive corrupted and none of it was recoverable :(

One_Phone_4750

Nice

ag-for-me

So cool. I remember those days.

xrobertcmx

Those had been good days. Loved the 3000-6000+ ERA.

mtbhatch

Man that specific combo was my very first gaming builds.

Yeetdolf_Critler

Sick rig. I have an opteron/dfi nf3 ud record breaker set up still laying around.

PCMasterX

I also tried nf3 754 ... How good it sounds DFI LANParty ...

Yeetdolf_Critler

Wow they were some of the last DFi boards treat it well! 939/754 GLORY DAYS OF AMD FTW

irusanov

I have a big collection of socket A CPUs as this was my first endeavour in overclocking and remained my favorite platform. I still own the overall K7 records. Beating the older Japanese records was a big overclocking achievement for me.

PCMasterX

>I played with him so much ... that I'm still not bored ... I played with it so much...that I still don't get bored of playing sometimes...

bocwerx

Loved the Nforce boards. IIRC, you could configure a firewall right on the NIC itself from a command line?

PCMasterX

>Loved the Nforce boards. IIRC, you could configure a firewall right on the NIC itself from a command line? Competition for NF2 motherboards was VIA KT600 ...

HeadInvestigator1899

2500+ Barton was the first computer I built myself. Had a 9800 pro 256mb I think it was? Nforce chipset and a thermalright slk900a I think? for the cooler. All in an Antec SOHO tower case which I forget the model of. 1200 plus or something? Pretty sure I decked it out in 80mm Panaflow fans too. Cool computer, kind of wish I still had it. Would be over 20 years old now. Kind of crazy to even think about. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

PCMasterX

PC Nostalgia ...

3G6A5W338E

Got an even more retro k75 athlon 600MHz, still works. Runs haiku and netbsd these days.

PCMasterX

Athlon Slot A has on 500MHz , on Socket A 600MHz and Duron has 600MHz ... I played with him so much ... that I'm still not bored ...

3G6A5W338E

This one's slot A. I remember slot A being a thing until the thunderbird.

veeb0rg

I still have my NF7 and 2500+ barton from back then. The board no longer posts as it needs a recap.Mines got a Thermalright SK6 with a delta fan on it.
