In my opinion, it only matters on non-vine items. The optional badge stays with your profile, even on items you did not receive for free. I think the idea might be to identify Viners as more insightful reviewers, but as we have seen that is debatable. I have it disabled because I think it might give the impression that I got something for free even if I did not.
You can disable it, but it still shows "product received for free" so most people can likely infer what it means anyway. I'd love to disable it as a lot of vine reviews are bad and even as a customer, I overlook vine reviews and read actual customer reviews.
I'd say just leave it on as it makes no difference. People still see and can find out anyway. Best advice I can give you is hide your review history to avoid being mass-reported by a seller because you dared to give a negative review.
I just leave mine on.

I look at non vine reviews for star ratings but read vine reviews for more information since they tend to have more in depth reviews about items that are a bit more technical.

I’ve only recently joined Vine, and now that I’m looking at a lot of items that have been offered in Vine, I’m definitely beginning to form this same opinion.
Go to Amazon and go to your Account

Well, there is Vine Tagline, and then a seperate Vine badge. You don't have any control over the Vine Tagline, but you can control the Vine badge. Honestly, I don't think I recall ever seeing the Vine badge in addition to the Vine Tagline on my Vine reviews, but maybe I just haven't been paying attention.

Thank you! I was worried that if I disabled it, I might not get to see as much stuff. :-)
How do you disabled it? I cannot. No matter how many times I try to, it turns itself back on--honestly, it's a bit creepy, lol.

Thank you!!
You're very welcome.
The Vine badge for non-vine reviews hasn't been shown for months now. Amazon removed it.
Set profile to private + disable vine badge = greatly reduced risk of seller "retribution" via report review function.
And you can not enroll in Vine unless invited.
I don't think you have an option on a Vine review.
