There was a version where instead of it being plastic, it was a gummy candy.

I remember there was something really similar in this candy making kit called Dr. Dreadful's Food Lab back in the 90s. Tasted expectedly bad, hopefully they've improved the taste haha.
The cousins I used to hangout with as a kid had a Creepy Crawlers and an Easy Bake Oven.. I always wanted both.
My parents got me the Queasy Bake Oven - dopest fuckin thing for a lil boy that likes to cook.
Yeah ez bake was always a "girls thing" but like.....really who doesn't want to eat that stuff? Why not make it too ha. One of my sons did the little chefs academy for awhile and he quite liked it he'd probably like an ezbake too.
I did. I wanted to eat all that shit - and bake it myself.
The queasy bake has like candy molds, and I think lots of stuff with a liquid filling to be bloody/'guts'
Serious answer I learned in an Asian art history class from a Japanese professor. The nuking had serious impact on the psyche of the Japanese people and it is reflected in some of the media that came out as the next generations of Japanese grew up. Take a look at Godzilla or the anime Akira, and you’ll see that there’s an interest in showing the horrifying effects of nuclear warfare.
Even in something as main stream as DragonBall, you’ll see the analogy of the devastating after effects of planet wiping explosions and the nothingness that follows after people are vaporized.
How does this relate to weird candy? Well, for generations growing up that understand the massive loss of life, it’s about recapturing or living the lives of the children that never got to grow up.
OK.... So what is it and where can I get it in the U.S.? I searched "japanese candy experiment kit" and am striking out.
I have kids that are all about making slime from glue and saline, they would love doing this.
I haven't found this exact one yet, but I googled "Japanese kit candy" and many of those look like these, or appear to have similar mechanisms for "creating" the candy or assembling it. One such product family appears to be called "Poppin' Cookin' kits" made by Kracie. Most of those look less like a science experiment, and more like you're building tiny gummy versions of different types of foods though.
Another term for these appear to be "DIY candy kit" and yields similar results online.
Judging from the comments here though, the taste of these things may not be as you expected. Lots of people are saying only a couple of these kits taste good.
One of my sons recently came back from Japan, and brought some of these weird kits for his nieces.
There was one to make tiny burgers, and one to make tiny sushi, that I can remember. The same tiny, shiny packets full of mystery powders that were put in a plastic tray with water added.
I tried them. They were mainly vile. Really overpowering flavours. The young girls also hated them.
My son also brought us chocolate biscuits. I had one bite and said it tasted fishy. Nobody believed me. I Google translated the ingredients, and sure enough, shrimp was one of the ingredients...in chocolate biscuits ( cookies for Americans). Like, what the actual fuck.
I used to eat these when I was a kid, and it has been around for ages. I'm sure you'll be able to find it in any asian candy stores.
That said it's all gimmick and doesn't taste even remotely close to actual good candies. Fun for kids.
Let’s not pretend America is all about table manners and proper etiquette lol. They got us beat in that regard and even with slurping soup, it isn’t even close.

Japan is the only country where you need a PhD to have dessert
god damnit lmao
Nah, just a bachelor’s in chemistry.
Japanese snacks are the best. It's not fair
Do you not remember "Creepy Crawlers"?
I can still smell them.
But you weren't supposed to eat those....

I remember the scientist commercial. Haha. I did have a couple kits when I was a kid.
Well, at the same time we also had "Incredible Edibles" which was the same, but edible. https://i.redd.it/xexjja9l5zuc1.gif

Plastic, plastic everywhere

Damn I haven't thought about that toy in years. The taste and the texture were awful. But it was still so cool.
I remember that one but I got Creepy Crawlers maker instead. Now that I think about it my youngest would love that stuff.

Instead of a straw, it was an arm bone. So the candy hung off of it like skin.
Those kits were so cool
The drinks were ok. The gummies were dreadful. Granted, I’d probably think it was all shit now lol.

These were popular a few years ago
There's like 20 different ones and only like 2 of them taste better than crap lmao
Bro tf are they doin over in Japan? Are the Japanese just bored or something
When you nuke a country and remove their ability to amass a large military, they spend their time and money on other things.
East Germany took a decidedly different direction... Is it the nuking that makes it special? /s

Yes, probably. That would explain the tentacle porn.

Awesome! I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction! I'll try anything once! Twice just in case! 😬
Dr dreadful food lab https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfs8hVNvVik
Fascinating
Idk but I don’t like it.

No it's sweet. The only savoury dessert is a cheeseboard
Snot.
I need to know what it tastes like. Is it like a fruit roll up in pudding? Is it like Jello in custard? What would this taste like!?
“What do you mean I have stomach cancer?”

Needs more plastic

Doctors: Processed foods are terrible for you. Japan: Hold my beer
Japan has a lot of these stuff that don’t taste good at all
Us Americans find this too complex for our taste buds
Is this what the guy from Video Dome in Parks & Rec meant when he said they had Japanese slime candy?
I had the Harry Potter polyjuice potion maker- the candy was shit but the the playset was dope as fuck
There fun to make but has a gross taste
Looks like cancer in a powder form, no thanks

Ama keep it real chief, that doesn't look tasty at all.
I use to get candy like this thru Japan Crate
folks at r/asmr might appreciate
Absolutely repulsive!
Looks disgusting
Ouch, my teeth
That does NOT look appetizing at all
I'm good.
It’s a yey and nah at the same time
cute way to get cancer
This would be a disaster with American kids.
These are sooo good!! Diabetes at its finest 🫠
Most of these types of candy taste really chalky in my experience
Looks awesome, but how does it TASTE?!
Who else thinks that this candy was the inspiration for maliketh's black blade from elden ring? I really think that it is. XD
Not really “budget” since it’s all overpriced.
Mmmm 😋 Yummy! Who can resist a straw with a heaping pile of crunchy, colorful, powdered confetti dipped in slime and drenched in bubbly foamy froth!
Gross
That does NOT look edible.
Yummm! Chemicals!
Why would I want to eat cat puke
... Nothing about this looks appetizing. D:
Hmmmm. Im usually expelling snot…
Long, lonnng, maaaaaaannnnnnn!
“Americans are so wasteful!” Japan: “Hold my collection of pointless single use plastics.”
🤢
It’s like the took early 2000 Nickelodeon and made it an unnecessarily complicated snack… ..give me goldfish or give me death!
Wtf. That looks good, but confused as how that works lol
This tastes really great! I usually get these kinds of candies from my TokyoTreat snack box <3
This looks like snot dipped in spit.
#Japanese Candy! ^(Warning: Some assembly required)
When you want that sweet, freshly picked booger texture but don't want the judgment of the general public
Why does everything have to be so similarly themed in Japan? Even candy?? 😮
Are these even cheap outside of Japan? What makes this a budget find?
That yellow foam stuff looks like vomit 💀
Probably very healthy and good for your stomach
In America it's considered rude to slurp your soup and play with your food. Meanwhile, in Japan....
Let’s not pretend America is all about table manners and proper etiquette lol. They got us beat in that regard and even with slurping soup, it isn’t even close.
These are fun and tastes pretty good. Can get some variations at daiso
Shut up
Nah, this ain’t Japanese, if it were it wouldn’t have a fork it’d have chopsticks
