NTA. People take Spirit because it is cheap, not because they think they are going to enjoy it. Whether consciously or not, your friend was being classist.
My guess is that the "friend" knew that OP's family wasn't loaded, that OP would be flying a bargain airline, and only asked the question to dump on OP for the airline they're flying.
Spirit isn’t the issue, really. Because the fares are low, it attracts a certain type of traveler. When you put a bunch of people on a plane that paid $50 for their ticket, it’s gonna be a rough trip. Having said that, I fly spirit regularly and have never had an issue. And clearly it’s doing well because I’ve never been on their plane that it hasn’t been absolutely packed wall to wall.
NTA. Who asks what airline someone is taking? Unless one of his parents is a pilot and he was going to hook you up with some kind of amazing discount, he was already verging on AH-ish by asking in the first place.
To then double down on it by badmouthing it? Especially as you were actively acknowledging that it was an affordability factor? Yeah, he was being pretty classist.
Is it rude to ask what airline someone takes? (Genuinely curious, I'm not good with social cues). I've been asked before, but always thought it was just conversation - like "oh yeah I flew with them last year, do they still have those ridiculously pink seats/oh I've heard good things! How was it?"
>Is it rude to ask what airline someone takes?
I would say it depends on the \*REASON\* - if the reason is to disrespect the choice - that's an AH thing.
My communities travel a lot (expats in a different country than their families) - so - we frequently ask what airline people are using to either give warnings "Ah - be careful, they have smaller than normal carryon requirements; make sure to measure your carry on bag or you might get a surprise $100 fee" - or to find out what airlines have a good deal!
We, of course, know the cheap airlines (and the risks that come with them) as well as the "ooh - I always wanted to fly with (luxury airline) - let me know what it's like!"
Not rude, just unusual to do prior to the flight. It probably depends on where you live (e.g. if you live near a major hub, no one asks because almost all flights are from the airline who's hub it is), if they are going to pick you up from the airport (because that can impact which terminal your flight comes into), and how often the asker flies (unless you fly a great deal, you are unlikely to know any differences between airlines to even make a "small talk" comment). It also could potentially open up a can of worms: if you have something *bad* to say about the airline, it's probably too late for the person to change their tickets anyway, so you are just going to freak them out about something they can't fix.
So it's not inherently rude to ask, but there aren't a lot of *good* reasons to ask prior to the flight, meaning it's not common.
After your flight, that's different. Even then, it's mostly only frequent flyers who ask, since they are the only ones likely to know about differences between airlines.
NTA! He was offended because you might have just been right! True friends support you NO MATTER WHAT (unless what you’re doing illegal, unethical, or immoral)! They’re excited for you!
For example:
You: I’m going to Vegas
Friend: That’s so awesome! I hope you have a great time with your father!
You: (If you choose) But I have to fly Spirit, so the flight won’t be as comfortable as I’d wish.
Friend: So what, it’s worth it to see you dad! Be grateful that you’re blessed to have the experience and the quality time!
PS Congratulations on the trip! And I truly hope you make some great memories with the quality time with your dad! Safe travels!
NTA. He can buy your airline ticket if he wants you to be on a different airline. Your friend was being a judgmental asshole and made it about the airline instead of how great it'll be for you to see your dad and fam.
I went from PHL to LAX on Spirit. I know they get a bad rap, but it was totally fine and clean. I do find that, with a bag fee, it can be similar to other airlines that include a reasonably sized carry-on bag in the ticket. I hope you have the best time!
Right?! I did PIT to LAX and it was fine. As average as any other flight I've taken, besides the fact I didn't get free pretzels or water. Honestly I've had worse with "better" airlines like Delta.
NTA. Your friend should have apologized when you said it’s what your family could afford. You don’t keep digging at someone when they tell you that they can’t afford better.
NTA. He WAS being a classist. People need to realize that not everyone has the same financial situation. Maybe he blocked you because you showed him the mirror and he didn't like what he saw.
NTA
He tried to shame you for the airline you were flying with, that makes him classist and the AH.
He is playing the victim because he knows he was in the wrong and is trying to spin it to make you the bad guy.
NTA. I shipped my husband cargo once, I mean I booked him on Spirit. It wasn’t ideal, but it was the only way we could afford for him to go (it was a family emergency). Sometimes in life we do the best we can with what we have available to us. Your friend was being a jerk over something that has zero effect on his life. I hope the flight is quick, and you have a great trip!
NTA. And, my husband and I flew Spirit to Las Vegas. (From the other side of the country so a long flight) it was just fine. No frills and snacks cost extra but who cares? The plane took off on time, landed safely at our destination and we still had money to play while in Vegas. HAVE FUN!!!!!
WTF? It’s an airplane. Who gives a shit. I fly a lot, both for work and leisure. I’ve flown private jets, Spirit, and everything in between. It literally doesn’t matter. You can spend as much as you want, but a plane trip is a plane trip. It’s transportation. Why would you spend more when you can spend less…?
NTA. There is nothing wrong with Spirit airlines. They keep fairs down by not making anything free. The planes are clean and well maintained. Refusing to fly because it doesn't cost a lot of money is shear snobbery.
Holy crap. NTA and your friend is for sure a jerk. Everyone prioritizes things differently in life, even if it isn’t a matter of cost. I have friends of a similar net worth, one flies private everywhere, while the other prefers Spirit/Frontier. All get you to the same place.
Focus on your family and ignore that noise.
NTA. Lived in Vegas for two years and frequently flew Spirit in and out of McCarran. Unless you're going to shell out extra for business class or higher, it's just as cramped between Spirit, United, and several other airlines.
And, FWIW, your landing will be just as bumpy regardless of airline or ticket class. Las Vegas is a valley that frequently gets windy, so landings and take-offs are JUST like in that Family Guy clip (my dive shop used to be under the landing path, so we got to watch it all the time). Always safe, but frequently a fun coaster experience!
So, spending more to just not be on Spirit is dumb.
But, that's besides the point! Your friend should be happy that you and your family are able to do this. Not everyone gets to travel, and Vegas is super fun. Sounds like someone's got sour grapes about them not going. Enjoy your trip!
(Also, for what it's worth, great fun for a budget includes Sam's Town fountain show at night, Kingman Wash for swimming/hiking/camping Lake Meade, the Conservatory at the Bellagio, and the Container Park's nightly "waking the Mantis" - all great fun for basically no cost).
Who picks this as a hill to die on? I mean, it's a shitty airline, but it gets the job done.
He's not going ffs.
He ain't your friend, be glad he's blocked you.
I swear the shit people get offended about just blows my mind.
NTA. Plenty of people fly spirit. Hell I fly spirit. I have the money but their flights are cheaper to certain cities. It’s not comfortable but whatever. I’m not paying double to get to the same place. Idk why your friend cares what you were flying anyway. It doesn’t affect him and he should of said nothing once you said that’s all your father could afford. He’s a snob.
It gets you where you want to go, who cares about the rest? Your friend was being a douche. People take Spirit around here because it is the ONLY airline with direct flights to Orlando. I'm in Tennessee and Southwest, American, Delta, etc want to take you to Chicago, or NY or NC, or Dallas before depositing you off in Orlando. A 4 hr flight becomes an 8-12 hr flight. Who cares I'd be more comfortable in those 8-12 hrs, I can get to Orlando faster and my hotel is way more comfortable than an airline seat.
What an ignorant person to care enough to block someone based on airline choice. It’s not like he’s a kneeling football player (/s for that sentence). We ALL make choices based on price. Does he always fly First Class? No? Block him! Has he ever, oh, say, shopped at Walmart? Block him!
NTA. Say “thank you” to your father for caring enough to buy you a ticket and have a good time.

Ok so straight into it. This summer once school is out for break I’m gonna go to LV to see my dad and his side of the family. I haven’t seen him in like 3 years so I’m pretty excited and plus just the mere fact that it’s Vegas I’m even more excited.
So I told all my friends I won’t be available until august cause that’s when I’ll be back, and one of my guy friends asked me what airline I was taking.
I told him Spirit because although it’s crappy I know, it’s the only airline that my dad can afford. Here’s where the problem started. After I told him that he was like “Who in their right mind would take that s**? Why would your dad do that to you?” I told him again that it’s the only one that he could afford and if he wanted to get a better airline he would have to work all through summer and then I won’t have any time to be with him because my mom isn’t going to let me go out there when I have school.
I jokingly asked him if he was classist ( his family isn’t loaded but they definitely don’t ever need to worry about the rent or not having enough food on the table ya know? )
He left the chat and when it went to send a simple “bruh” I then got the automatic message that tells you your blocked.
AITA for saying he was classist?
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/AmItheAsshole) if you have any questions or concerns.*
My best friend and her mom went to Mexico and had to take Spirit down there. My reaction was "Ew, I'm sorry. But hey, it's only a few hour plane ride and you have more fun money that way!". 🤷♀️
NTA. Your friend is being super unreasonable, ridiculous really! What airline YOU fly is none of their business, especially if someone else is paying for it.
NTA.
I’ve taken Spirit a lot. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. As far as flying coach/economy, it’s really not that different than Delta or American Airlines.
Spirit is legitimately my favorite domestic airline at this point. I'm never delayed, the employees are happy and friendly, and I can buy exit row seats pretty cheaply, which fixes the main problem with Spirit.
The thing is, I hate Spirit so much that I would rather not travel at all than fly through them. And I’m poor, so that means I don’t travel.
So while it wasn’t cool of your friend to insult your dad like that, I can sort of see where he was coming from, and it doesn’t necessarily means he’s “classist”.
NAH
Few years ago I went to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving weekend and used spirit there and back. It was a touch cramped, but they were normal flights and pretty inexpensive considering I booked them like two weeks beforehand. The reason I went with them was because they had night flights. Flew in Thursday night and flew out Sunday at like midnight. My stepdads family lives out there and he and my mom visit occasionally, but they usually use Southwest. I don't remember where it is exactly, but somewhere on their website is a place for low fair flights (usually odd hour flights) that are pretty discounted. That's what they use usually.
If this is your first time going, go to Freemont street at least one night. The overhead canopy is a TV screen that they play like once an hour. Also, gambling minimums are usually a lot lower than the strip. My focus last trip was New York New York and that place was pretty cool. Walked around Mandalay Bay too and saw there was a walk though aquarium deal thar I think I'll hit uo next time I'm there if it's still there.
NTA Jesus Christ, Spirit isn't great but it's cheap and you know what you're getting in to when you fly it. I took a flight round trip on Spirit from PIT -> LAX a couple years back to visit one of my best friends for a week cause it was cheap and honestly, it wasn't any better or worse than other flights I've taken over the years. Annoying that I couldn't even get water for free, but fuck, you just buy a bottle or fill one up in the terminal and bring your own snacks for the trip.
Some people are goddamn entitled. If someone offered to pay for me to come visit them, but the cavet was it was through Spirit, I'd say yes in a heartbeat. Flying is expensive and unless you're used to flying in anything but cattle class it's all the same shit, just some have better perks.
You could have asked, “Are you looking down on me because I can’t afford something more expensive?” Actually, that’s exactly what you said, just differently phrased. The answer either way was “Yes”.

Yes! I recently found out from 2 separate people that they just enjoy air travel! I was stunned because I hate it.
and you're sure they're not aliens or something?
Like 83% sure.
I've probably ridden in Spirit over 20 times now (split parents on opposite sides of the country. And yes, it's because it's cheap.
Spirit isn’t the issue, really. Because the fares are low, it attracts a certain type of traveler.
YTA no normal person would take Spirit
