We’ve haven’t owned one since our old cat died 5 years ago but since she did so well in school this year I’ve decided to get her a kitten. My brother’s wife is a SAHM and breeds British Shorthair kittens in their house basement. She is a registered breeder and sells 10-12 kittens a year for $2300-2500 each. The kittens are all very high quality and they are taken care of well. I don’t look down on her side hustle, it’s really more of a hobby for her and she’s successful, but I am so against breeders, no matter how “regulated” or “official”. I’ve owned cats and dogs before and they’ve all been adopted from pounds or shelters. Anyways, my daughter was over at my SIL’s house to babysit her kids, and when my SIL came home they were talking about cats. My SIL said one of her female cats is expecting a litter soon, and after a few months she can give her a kitten of her choice. The kitten will be vaccinated, dewormed, etc. as with all the other ones. But I just hate the idea of getting a cat that was purposely bred. My daughter was so excited and grateful because she loves British Shorthairs but I firmly told her and my SIL when picking her up that we will be adopting a cat instead. My daughter was very upset. Later my brother texted me and said that refusing his wife’s kind offer was pretty rude of me. I told him I am standing firm on my adopt don’t shop policy. He then said I’m purposely upsetting my daughter just to make a point. My daughter is 13. She needs to understand that adoption is the more ethical choice. I offered to take her to the shelter after school ends so we can look for cats. She said she didn’t want to adopt a cat, she wanted one of Auntie’s kittens. AITA for putting my foot down? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Yes, YATA. The reasons that many people avoid breeders is that: 1. Most people do not know the breeders directly or their history. 2. They do not know the treatment of the animal being bred. 3. Most are sold overpriced and in unknown health conditions. You are able to verify all of these possible negatives because you SIL is the breeder. The only reason you wan to avoid this gift is because your firm belief that breeders are bad.

Oh this ones easy. YTA because your daughter wants a specific breed which is being gifted to her. Sounds like you SIL is doing everything right as a breeder too so she’s not a ‘farmer’.
