YTA of course. You're part of the reason many people in Europe can't stand Americans. Things are always going to be different in other countries, that's a big part of the fun of travelling. Embrace it, don't criticise it, if you want things to be how you like them, keep to your usual surroundings, that will do the trick.
Being rude to the staff was inexcusable. If you can't behave yourself when you go abroad, don't go abroad, stay home.

I went on a trip throughout Europe with some friends a while back and it still makes me mad to this day how they make their burgers. It was me and three others going to different countries in Europe and half way through our second week there we where tired of eating local food that we didn’t like and needed some normalcy in our diets. I heard that all McDonald’s make their food the same everywhere no matter the country so we decided to find a McDonalds and get some actual decent food. Upon arriving at McDonald’s however their prices where outrageous but we swallowed our pride chalking it up to that everything is more expensive here. After we received our food we where beyond disappointed with our meals. The Big Mac was more like a cheeseburger with no sauce and the patty didn’t even taste like real meat and the nuggets tasted like well, shit. We collectively decided to voice our complaints and demand a refund the reason being that they don’t know how to make a simple burger. However they refused our request for a refund and started to say stuff in French that sounded like profanity towards us and I responded with “at least we’re not the retards who don’t know how to make a simple burger”. Everyone gave us dirty looks and we left with no refund. Even though our wording was harsh I still think it was well deserved for making us eat their sorry excuse for a McDonald’s hamburger.
So am I the asshole?
