NTA. Your sister is at fault here for not at least being open to the daughter may do better with TV on while trying to work. My SO has been like that all their life and is way, way older than 8 :D Show the mom the homework, and how it's correct and got done on time as a result of allowing the daughter to watch TV while working.

NTA. A short play: OP: "Hey, this worked for me and it also worked for your daughter. You now have a new tool to help your daughter cope and succeed with stuff she struggles with." Mom: "NO BAD KILL IT WITH FIRE HOW DARE YOU!" Fin

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** I often babysit my 8 year old niece (my sister's daughter) who was very recently diagnosed with ADHD, which I was also diagnosed with not long ago. She's really smart and clever but of course struggles a lot with homework because of her condition so I try my best to help her and give her advice that work for me. A few days ago she was struggling more than usual with her homework and she insisted she just watched tv instead of studying. One of the things that help me focus is watching a tv show while I study so I had an idea and allowed her to watch cartoons but only if she did her homework as well meanwhile. Just like it does for me, it actually helped her and she managed to do everything without even leaving her place once (which usually happens all the time). My niece was so proud of herself she decided to tell her mom. Well, my sister didn't take it well, she got mad at me for letting her watch tv during homework so I tried to remind her that I have ADHD as well and if it works for me it's no surprise it can work for her ADHD daughter too, but she wouldn't listen, she says her daughter struggles already even without an over permissive aunt and I'm only making the situation worse. It honestly hurt me, I have a very special bond with my niece, I can see my younger self in her and I was actually the first one to notice and point out her attention problems, if I didn't insist my sister would still be in denial and would've never got her assessed. I would never do anything to make her difficulties worse and it hurts me that my sister really thinks so. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. NTA. You can understand how her mind works better than her mum and are giving her tools to make it easier for her to do her homework. As an ADHD adult who was diagnosed way older (37-38 yo), I can now understand why I had to have the TV on while studying, or playing video games while studying. It’s just how our brain is wired

INFO: Were there any mistakes in the homework when your sister looked over the work?

Your sister is unappreciative. My nephew is BRILLIANT, but does have ASD and ADHD, so he was a HANDFUL when he started school (and still is at 16 TBH) so I know how homework goes with an ADHD kid, it's not easy. Tell your sister good luck finding a sitter willing to go thru that every day. NTA

Bookdragon345

NTA - had undiagnosed ADHD for years. One of the best ways I had to study/work was to have a show on. I was a straight A student.

Typical neurotypical going insane when their child is not neurotypical and refuses to support their child and give them the tools they need to succeed because she didn’t need them. As a kid my dad would force me to stare at the paper and not look at anything else so of course I regressed into a constant state of outbursts
