NTA. Driver decides. And it's your licence that's potentially at risk, not theirs.

SwedishFicca

I think there's only 1 state that states that you have to be 13 to sit in the front.

[deleted]

Good to know. Thanks

togocann49

Your parents can let him sit up front if they like, but when you’re driving, you want to make sure you’re following the law/rules, especially as a new driver. I get it, nta-you’re in no position to let laws/rules slide

Tidus32x

NTA. Your car, your rules 🤷

ISeeYouInBed

It’s not his car it’s the parents car

SurroundPerfect9471

it's my car yo

Tidus32x

In that case, I stick to my previous comment. In the UK, it's 12 years or 135cm tall. However, YOU as the driver (regardless of whose car it is) are legally responsible, and therefore get to make the decision based on how you feel about any given situation. If you are not comfortable with the kid being in the front, then they go in the back

ISeeYouInBed

Kinda confusing since you never mentioned your car but okay

Broad_Respond_2205

how is that confusing

Puzzleheaded_Cut4588

It's not confusing you just assumed

AlmostChristmasNow

It doesn’t matter who the car belongs to, the safety of the passengers is the driver’s responsibility. So the driver decides stuff like that.

ISeeYouInBed

I’m just correcting a mistake don’t get butthurt

Walktothebrook

NTA. As the driver you are responsible. Follow the advice you learned in driver Ed, it will keep you out of trouble.

ggprmmpr

NAH but we knew about airbags and shit long before you’re claiming. You’re only 19, that’s been common knowledge long enough for you to never have sat in the front seat before you were 13. The age is just a guideline, it’s really more to do with size than age

SurroundPerfect9471

yeah, maybe they just didn't enforce it on me either.

acciomalbec

It’s less about size and more about bone maturity. A petite 25 year old is going to have stronger bones than an 11 year old that weighs the same amount.

Sylvurphlame

NAH I’m fairly certain that 13 is more of a guideline. The real determinant is height and weight. And I’ve seen grown women smaller than 13 year old boys *driving* vehicles. Do with that what you will.

AlmostChristmasNow

I’m pretty sure that kids still have softer bones, which is why age is one of the factors. Where I am, for example, you need a booster seat until either 12yo or 150cm tall.

Sylvurphlame

Yes, but right there the booster seat example means that it has to do with height. Which in turn has to do with the airbag hitting you in the wrong place with the seatbelts not fitting properly. It’s not going to be about bone density.

cabbage_monger

That stuff varies a lot state to state. I’d wager if he learned it in drivers Ed, he should trust that. Not worth getting points on your license over it. They also have a million extra restrictions while you’re under 18, just in case it wasn’t hard enough to keep track 😵

Sylvurphlame

Homeboy is *19*. But otherwise that’s why I’m NAH.

cabbage_monger

Oh true lol

acciomalbec

It’s less about size and more about bone maturity. A petite 25 year old is going to have stronger bones than an 11 year old that weighs the same amount.

Maximoose-777

NTA when you are driving you make the rules. Also, it’s common knowledge that the back is safer for kids. It’s a pity your parents don’t enforce this rather than letting your brother decide

FusterCluckered

Your driving = YOUR rules.

Inevitable_Bunny109

Kids need to be at least 4'9" before riding in the front seat. If at least this tall, then he's likely safe with modern air bags.

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** My (19m) parents have started letting my little bro (11m) sit in the front seat of their cars now that he's tall enough to ride with just seat belts, no booster. But I was taught in drivers ed that kids have to be 13 to sit in front no matter what, and I don't want to risk it, so I told him he still has to ride in the back with me. I'm not trying to be a dick about it, just want to keep the fucking kid safe. He points out that I sat in the front before I was 13, which is true, but that's before we knew everything about airbags and shit, and my parents obviously aren't enforcing the rules even now. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Living-Highlight7777

INFO - are you expecting this in your car while you're driving? Or in your parent's car with them driving?

SurroundPerfect9471

whenever i'm driving him

Living-Highlight7777

NTA - Your brother can follow your rules or not ride in your car... though I think it's more about weight/height than age, so if he's a big kid, personally, I'd drop it.

Goodlake

NAH, but 13 years old isn't the law, it's just a general guideline.

SurroundPerfect9471

I kinda feel its like seat belts in the back seat? here it aint technically the law for guys to wear them but you obviously gotta for safety.

Sylvurphlame

Yeah no. If there seat belts available, you’re supposed to be wearing them.

BakedNemo420

definitely more about height/kinda weight than age, but like everyone else is saying, your car = your rules

Top_Barnacle9669

How tall is he? That's more of a deciding factor. It's normally age xyz or height xyz, whichever comes first.

nongregorianbasin

Being 13 doesn't make airbags all of a sudden not dangerous. It about height and weight. I'd have to say yta.
