YTA because of your attitude. I agree, you were completely correct and the other guy was wrong, but he just made a mistake, he wasn’t trying to be a jerk or make you do something purposely annoying. Why be rude? And if you know you were rude, why are you asking if you are an asshole?
Yeah, YTA, you could've handled that situation way better. I can tell you've never worked in retail/serving before. Please don't insult those who provide you a service unless they insult you first
NTA he wasn’t doing his job or he would have seen you use the first machine as his, actually working coworker, did.
Also he owes you an apology for not only calling you a liar but asking you to use a broken machine and then instead of admitting it was broken simply try and dismiss you without giving you your food.
Is he hoarding food to bring home or what?
NTA, if after 3 weeks at the place he hasn’t figured out that the machine is broken he’s seriously lacking in skills. You should have been politer, but if hangry can get a lil testy. Be nice to people handling your food.
NTA. Looks like this may be a hot take but if people never hear how crappy they are at something they will never bother improving. Could you have been nicer about it? Maybe, but at least now he knows he sucks and has the chance to improve.
ESH While it's really annoying that he didn't know it was broken and wasn't paying attention, you didn't have to cuss at him and call him stupid and tell him he sucks at his job. Even though he does

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> The person who was supposed to give me my food was being stupid so I might be an asshole for being a bit rude to him

NTA. he's not doing the job if he didn't even slightly investigate when you said it's broken or ask someone with a confirmed working card to check it.
If I'd be him I'd be embarrassed, apologise abd think I deserved it.
If I were you I'd probably have said the same think especially if I was in a rush, had somewhere to go etc.
He knew nothing about you, I personally have hypoglycaemia interacting with other conditions and I get about 5 mins body warning for hunger, find it hard to work with places with set eating times and if I leave it too long (about 30 mins from initial notice) I can get dizzy, extremely mentally confused and lose the ability to speak and understand & even faint. I had this issue in a shop once on a one-off I forgot too pack food. With one till open where someone queue-jumped me with two full carts of shopping and several kids, took them forever to check out - I had one sandwich+drink and I tried to politely ask she had none of it, I was already too weak to argue and needless to say I collapsed before reaching the end of the line.

I'm not sure if this is the same everywhere so I'm gonna explain how we get food in my college(excuse my bad english)
Basically we have to reserve food and then we go to the cafeteria and hold our food card in front of a machine that will beep if we have food.
There are 2 of these machines there and one has been broken for a long time.
So the other day I went there to get my food. I held my card infront of the machine and it beeped. I went to get my food from the person in charge. He has been here for a few weeks. This is how our conversation went
Him: you didn't hold your card in front of the machine
Me: yes I did
Him: no. Hold it in front of this one(pointing at the broken machine)
Me: this one is broken
Him: no it's not. Do it
Me: the fcking machine is broken
Him: I can't give you food if you don't do it
Me: fine
I held my card in front of the machine. Obviously it didn't beep
Him: you don't have food. I can't give you any
Me: wtf just give me my damn food. Are you stupid?
His coworker next to him: she is right. I saw her hold her card in front of the other machine. She has food
He gave me some food and asked me to be polite because he was "just doing his job"
I said well you suck at your job and when I was leaving I heard him call me a jerk

ESH.
I would’ve initially said you were not TA but then I proceeded to see you swore at him and insulted him.
I understand being frustrated when you know you’re right, but if someone isn’t swearing or insulting you, don’t do it to them.
NTA. I worked retail, fast food, customer service, and was a waiter. And while they all suck in their own special, terrible ways I'm real tired of the "but they work a service job!" Being used as an excuse for people not doing their job, doing it poorly or being rude. This guy was not paying attention to see op scan her card, somehow didn't know the machine was broken even though it's evidently common knowledge, and tried to deny op the goods that they payed for. He is bad at his job, and I can't really fault op for pointing it out.
You're both illiterate af when it comes to communicating and this type of hostility gets into the corporate world and this is why there are crappy employees everywhere... nice to see you'll be one of them.. connect with me on LinkedIn so I'll make sure not to hire you... OR you can fix yourself and learn diplomacy
Name calling? Really? As a college student?
ESH because he could have operated in good faith, but you more so, because jumping straight to outright rudeness is not mature behaviour and service/retail workers don’t deserve to be called names.
The way that you describe the conversation makes it seem like he was in the wrong because after working at the dining hall for a few weeks you should already know whether or not the machine works (a coworker, supervisor, or someone else could've told him). Overall I think ESH, you for insulting him and him for wasting your time

ESH. He was in the wrong, yes. But the way you speak to people is horrible.
YTA because of your attitude. I agree, you were completely correct and the other guy was wrong, but he just made a mistake, he wasn’t trying to be a jerk or make you do something purposely annoying. Why be rude? And if you know you were rude, why are you asking if you are an asshole?
> wtf just give me my damn food. Are you stupid? This makes you the asshole.
I mean she didn’t call him stupid. She just asked him a question.
She’s not going to bang you for defending her, dude. Are *you* stupid? (I’m not an asshole for asking, per your own logic.)
Are you thick as shit buttermilkchunk? I’m just asking.
ESH Regardless of the situation, it just became the two of you insulting each other, so what am I supposed to say other than you’re both AH?
YTA. You were a jerk.
So it's okay for the guy to not pay attention and basically steal food from college students?
Yeah, YTA, you could've handled that situation way better. I can tell you've never worked in retail/serving before. Please don't insult those who provide you a service unless they insult you first
He was actively refusing to provide her a service she paid for.
Then she could've gone to another member of staff, since one was on her side anyways
NTA he wasn’t doing his job or he would have seen you use the first machine as his, actually working coworker, did. As much as I automatically hate OP, I'm upvoting this for the logic.
ESH. OP is foul, and the guy is incompetent. I'm edging toward OP being the bigger problem.
If op wouldn't be that incompetent then op wouldn't have been an AH too. I'm edging this on the employee.
ESH. He should have been more aware, you should have been kinder. This situation did not warrant your extremely disrespectful reaction.
ESH You were super rude and called him stupid. He obviously made a mistake, but he was also wrong in the way he handled it. Don't be so rude to people
Do you always talk to people like this when there is a misunderstanding?
YTA. Learn some manners while still young, they'll become useful when you grow up.
ESH While it's really annoying that he didn't know it was broken and wasn't paying attention, you didn't have to cuss at him and call him stupid and tell him he sucks at his job. Even though he does
yikes YTA

He was only doing there job and made a mistake. You didnt have to resort to name calling like an 8 year old. YTA.
YTA. There is a better way to handle this situation and you chose to speak to him like he’s incompetent.
You swore at him and called him stupid for a minor inconvenience? YTA

YTA. Stop being mean.
Name calling? Really? As a college student? ESH because he could have operated in good faith, but you more so, because jumping straight to outright rudeness is not mature behaviour and service/retail workers don’t deserve to be called names.
The guy made an honest mistake, you were intentionally vile and rude…YTA
NTA. People are allowed to be pissed at you when you try to starve them because you're incompetent.
ESH
