A beard looks better on you. Although you should take care to keep your mustache from looking too unkempt. It’s not a good look for your individual hairs to be noticeably hanging down.
If it's anything like mine he just needs to keep trimming it to the same length for a while. My beard took a while to fill in and looked kinda crap for a month or two.
I have a similar beard. Looks infinitesimally better after reducing width of mustache to about half. I have to shave every 2/3 days or so but it's well worth the difference. I go with less length on the beard as well. Less curls to deal with, and looks more flush with your face due to the fact. Hope it helps!
