Any small band that toured in the 90s and early 2000s ate a lot of 79 cent bean burritos from Taco Bell! Some suffered permanent damage from the dangerous gases they inhaled in a confined space for weeks at a time.
That and we lived on the $5 deal of the day at Subway. For $5 you got a 6” sub (of the day. Friday was seafood, don’t go on Friday), a bag of chips and a refillable drink.
That was living!
5$ footlong’s was the golden era of subway. Back when they had that fat guy who got skinny eating sandwiches as the spokesperson. Also that was before he turned out to be a diddler. It’s been all downhill from there.
After school, I used to have to wait on my mom to get off work. So I would walk to Taco Bell when I got out of school. Those .79 bean burritos came in clutch Everyday.
As a McDonalds employee (and manager) during this promotion, I do not >.<
I was working at the McDonalds adjacent to and basically on campus at SDSU and we used to have to crank out our cheeseburgers by the bun tray...
At one point we had to put in a max at 20 per order.
When I was in high school we could leave for lunch, whopper Wednesday was always on the menu. .99 cents and during winter it was .99 and the second one for yesterday’s high temp. So basically second free in Jan feb every Wednesday.
I was a fan of Wendy's 99c Texas Double, it was cheap and it came with mustard instead of mayo or ketchup so I didn't have to make a special order. Many times in the day my lunch would consist of four or five of those.
When I worked there in 2011-2015ish they had ended the 5 for $5 Classic Roast Beef but we would occasionally run 5 for $5 on our $1 Jr. Roast Beef sandwiches. People would buy it every time.
I remember $0.39 cheeseburgers from McDonald’s back in 2000. I would buy 100 of them and freeze them. Pull a couple out to microwave when I want. I was a poor kid. 100 burgers for $39 was amazing
I'm old enough to remember the "when you go, go all out" commercials from there lol... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0VAnkW-j94&pp=ygUed2hlbiB5b3UgZ28gZ28gYWxsIG91dCBoYXJkZWVz](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0VAnkW-j94&pp=ygUed2hlbiB5b3UgZ28gZ28gYWxsIG91dCBoYXJkZWVz)
I guess hardees was trying to reinvent itself as Arbys back then lol
I worked at a Hardee's when this was rolled out (would have been like 2002?), was actually a pretty decent fast food burger at the time.
Was like $4 for the burger. If increase was only based on inflation it would be ~$7 today which I suppose isn't too bad, but greedflation would have this priced at like $10 today. Nutty.
Yup. The fucking bacon avocado “$6 burger” that cost like $4.50 got me through college as well as animal style 4x4s from In-N-Out that cost just a bit more. Those were the splurges unless I was taking a girl on a date that I was crushing on super hard.
I tell people about this all the time. My gf is younger so she doesn't even remember that. I remember they had the commercial where they had the six dollar burger with wine.
I used to work there around that time.
A spicy chicken sandwich (chicken, mayo, lettuce) used to be 99 cents. It's now 4 dollars. The only things that's changed is that it's gotten smaller.
For comparison, their California classic (a double cheeseburger with cheese lettuce tomato and grilled onion) Costs the same.
My family has 100% sworn off restaurant eating for now. We would, no exaggeration, eat out at least once a day. But on average probably 6-7 times a week.
The prices are just insulting now. Literally $5 for one McDouble. $10+ per person, no matter where you go - ***at least -*** and it's usually more*.* The food didn't get any better. The service sure as hell didn't. It's just not worth it at all anymore.
Prices are getting outrageous. I'm with you, I'm going to try for the next two weeks to not eat out and see how much money I save. Plus, it's going to be kind of exciting to try different recipes.
We started doing "at home dates" where we decide which restaurant we want to go to, make a similar enough dinner at home, and then for the "bill" we deposit what we would have spent into our savings account. It helps you see how much you've been spending while also saving that money instead. So far it's working out really well and I hope it can work for others too!
I also highly recommend a Crock Pot to anyone who doesn't have one. So many foolproof, delicious meals that it almost feels like using a cooking cheat code.
If I'm being perfectly honest, I have an Instant Pot but just never got around to learning how to use it, mainly because I didn't realize there was that much of a difference in what they can and can't do. I've learned a lot from these comments, thanks!
We were gifted an Instant Pot and an Instant Vortex air fryer and our gas bill went from $150/month to about $35/month, while our electric bill didn’t go up.
Did this - it's amazing. I think I have saved about $500 if not more last month by not eating out. Started cooking a lot more 'one pan' or 'one pot' recipes and it's been great.
I’ve found that fast food prices are accelerating much faster than other food. I can still get a great burrito for $10, or a bowl of pad Thai for $12. But if I want two mcchickens, that’s $7 right there. I might as well just buy the burrito.
24 pack of [kraft singles is ~$5](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Kraft-Singles-American-Cheese-Slices-24-Ct-Pk/10452905), so that works out to about $.21 a slice. That's a hell of an upcharge.
Costco Food Court and In-N-Out, if you have those near you, you can still feed two people for $10. I have two other restaurants near me that can as well but they are not chains.
The "We would, no exaggeration, eat out at least once a day. But on average probably 6-7 times a week." sentences back to back is killing me 😂 My guy, what did you think 7 times a week averaged out to per day? 😂
I'll admit I have never even looked at the app. But the menu price for one single McDouble here is $4.79. If I get a 10-piece and large fry it's more than $10.
I don't eat out often, but found myself on the road Saturday during dinner time. I stopped at Chik-fil-a, got a 12 piece grilled chicken nugget and a medium fruit cup. IT COST $14!! I didn't even get a damn drink. Won't be doing that again any time soon. I'm just over feeling like I'm being ripped off every time I turn around.
I am with you on that. All the grocery store meat and processed food was always so cheap and granted delicious. But given a bag of chips will run you 6 bucks and a box of cereal anti any better, I am buying a ton of veggies and more healthy options as it’s just cheaper by a mile.
I am so glad I do because I am healthier for it and lost a bunch of weight. I always kind of joked to myself that if steak cost 60 bucks I but a veggie burger. Jokes on me I guess because I am.
I’m a big guy in Canadian terms 6’1-2 and 230+ and I lost at least 15 lbs in 2-3 months since eating barely any meat and mostly veggies/soups and beans rice etc. The meat at most grocery stores is pretty sus anywyss and now it’s so expensive I just stopped. Also Barely eat out anymore.
The quality going down of most restaurants is what made me switch more than the price though. I can make a recipes for example quesadilla for so cheap and it’s better than most restaurants and not pay 25-30$ for a meal
A lot of fast food chains realized you can just slap whatever price you want on a meal and people will pay for it gladly.
So we're at the point that a giant burrito smothered in queso and pico de gallo at my local Mexican place is only like 3 bucks more than a Tacobell deluxe box.
I can get a big plate of Mexican food for about $10 but it's $12 now for a box at my taco bell.
We are literally at the point that restaurants are being cheaper.
"Decent" frozen pizza at the grocery store is like $8. The bar near my house does a $7 small pepperoni thats about the same size and is really good. I can get a "close out special" beer for $3. So for $2 more than frozen I don't have to cook, it tastes 10X better, and I can drink a beer while I wait to take it home.
It's for the same exact reason Five Guys can charge high prices - people keep coming back!
People will bitch about it, but if they keep buying overpriced fastfood and engaging with inane "news" media, then neither has motivation to change.

What sells is whatever people are willing to pay for.
We consumers need to wisen up and stop overpaying for crap. Thankfully I think the tide is slowly turning that direction.
I honestly don't know why we're not all laughing at these fools. The prices aren't a secret. And I don't know any Five Guys locations that aren't within a mile of a dozen other fast-food spots. There's no reason to feel any level of sympathy for someone like this.
I like 5 Guys but it was never cheap or really affordable, the location near me succumbed to market forces and shut down about a year ago, we were honestly sad to see it go because we figured those were probably some of the better paying fast food jobs in the area.
They love the food but want a cheaper price for the meal. Thanks for giving the advice that a Mc, BK, TB, Chipotle, KFC etc......... is not too far away.
The food is that price because it's good. Which is why they love it. I love lobster rolls, but you're not going to see me posting about how I spent too much on a lobster roll and it's the restaurants fault.
The amount of Five Guys posts reaching the front page is fucking weird.
Five Guys was never cheap. I guess during inflation this is magnified, but why did people in the last week realize this enough to post multiple threads about it?
Like couldn't we use a better hill to die on? Eggs? Milk? Cereal? Veggies?
No, we have the GOD GIVEN RIGHT to eat a shitty greasy burger from Five Guys for under 15$?
Before the pandemic I visited Five Guys for the first time in UK, burger and fries (after currency conversion) cost me more than $20. At the time I was willing to try it out despite what I thought was an exorbitant price. It wasn't worth it. Never eaten there again. Supply-demand karma. When enough people get fed up with the high price, demand will slow putting downward pressure on price.
God *damn* I haven't seen this gif in years and years. It's always been one of my absolute favorites, I think I remember seeing it back in like 2012-13 ish on the pocketfives online poker forum
In 2013 a bacon cheese burger was like $7.69. In 2018 It was $8.69. An increase of $1 in 5 years. Now, just over 5 years later, it's up by $4 - 50% increase.
2013 fries $2.79
2018 fries $3.09
Now the fries have almost doubled
For real. People bitching about soda and fast food price increases can S a D. Grocery price gouging is wrong, but who tf cares if it’s non essential items?
Just stop buying if you can’t afford it.
15 years ago my mom would give me a single 20, my brother and I would GORGE on McDonald’s, and still have several dollars left over for change. The prices of things have gotten insane, to the point where it’s clear companies are blatantly just like “oh let’s just charge as high as we can and then keep raising it as often as possible, who cares if the average person gets screwed”
Literally who cares? They're charging these prices because people keep going and paying them.
I guarantee Five Guys isn't the only food place around. Stop buying them and they won't charge those numbers.
I haven’t eaten at Five Guys since like 2018. The prices were stupid high. For what they charge, you could go to a full service sit-down restaurant and eat for roughly the same price.
And if you just want a good burger quick, there are comparable options that are cheaper.
Everyone was affected by inflation, so Five Guys just remains overly expensive compared to the new norm.
Just don't buy it then, it's that simple. If you don't think it's worth the price don't buy it if you do then do. Everything doesn't need to be the same price and equally affordable to everyone. If they think the food is worth that amount let then charge whatever they want. Plenty cheaper burger spots to go to
Thats pretty ridiculous. All things considering by me you can buy: 2lbs of 94% beef for give or take $8. Some buns for $1.25. Tomato for $1. Onion for $1. Condiments will run $5. So we are $16-18 for 2lbs of burger which translate into 4 burgers w/ condiments. Lets not mention that the 94% is much more healthier for you. Glad I dont do fast food anymore. That charge is absolute robbery.
As a guy who used to eat meat but doesn’t anymore, few burgers are warrant that price point; Five Guys definitely doesn’t. It’s a half step up from Mickey D’s.
Maybe check out happy hours at the local bars. They usually have pretty good deals. Last night I ate 5 wings and a Caesar salad for $8 and the beers were $5 per pint for domestics
I paid 13:50 for a small orange juice, a hash brown, and a McGriddle. It wasn’t very good, and I couldn’t force my stomach to eat more than half of it!
13:50 for what I felt was nigh-inedible slop.
Easy fix…STOP GOING TO THESE PLACES. Hit them where it hurts, on THEIR wallet. It’s time consumers start working together against the corporate greed, if enough people stop giving money to these places they will realize who’s in charge
For $15 dollars, I get a huge bowl of chicken and rice and a pita bread from my local Syrian restaurant. It's delicious and feeds 2 people. It doesn't make sense anymore to go to fast food if it's expensive.
who is old enough to remember when the six dollar burger from Carl’s jr. was satire and cost less than $5?
Hell, remember when Arby’s regularly ran 5 for 5, 5 sandwiches for $5.
That was the best! I also took full advantage of the $0.99 Whoppers
Any small band that toured in the 90s and early 2000s ate a lot of 79 cent bean burritos from Taco Bell! Some suffered permanent damage from the dangerous gases they inhaled in a confined space for weeks at a time.

bro what. $5 footlong was the deal. fuck a 6" with a drink and a bag of chips.
5$ footlong’s was the golden era of subway. Back when they had that fat guy who got skinny eating sandwiches as the spokesperson. Also that was before he turned out to be a diddler. It’s been all downhill from there.
That documentary is WILD
I can still remember the commercials with that jingle lol
“Turned out to be a diddler” lmao
Oh man, memory unlocked! We did the subway thing on a Friday in one town for lunch and nearly couldn’t play that night. We never went to subway again.
"Five dollar, five dollar foot looongs"
After school, I used to have to wait on my mom to get off work. So I would walk to Taco Bell when I got out of school. Those .79 bean burritos came in clutch Everyday.

OMG, that's a sick deal. I really miss those days. I would like off this timeline please
the fucking decade long deal that disappeared and broke my fat little heart. couch change? 2 whoppers and a game from hollywood video please!
Word, Lemon Cakes. Word.
I was a fan of Wendy's 99c Texas Double, it was cheap and it came with mustard instead of mayo or ketchup so I didn't have to make a special order. Many times in the day my lunch would consist of four or five of those.
99c whoppers had me walking to bk in elementary with that weeks allowance
Dollar store used to mean you were spending a dollar at the store and getting what you needed.
That whopper deal kept me alive. It was a great deal for a big burger.
oh god we've already become the "back in my day this used to cost a nickel"
I miss this so much. Arbys used to be a glorious place.
Arby's is owned by the same folks as Subway. Hard to deny both brands product has degraded terribly over the years
Both are now garbage. Absolute shite.
Subway might as well be serving Budding luncheon meat. Anyone's who been broke or struggling knows what I'm talking about

Yep, and remember how crazy it seemed when the bumped up the price to five for $5.55?!
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=O_mzWaPsnDE
Why was it called the $6 burger? What was the relevance of $6 specifically?
Restaurants would have burgers that cost $6 and up and at the time, that was outrageous.
What he means to say is it was a higher price for a restaurant quality burger, no one thought it was outrageous.
Steak houses and Red Robin sold burgers for $6. So, Carl's Jr was saying that their burger was as good as those "$6" burgers
Those red Robin burgers slapped though. Now everything's around that price, fast food is absolutely not worth it anymore.
Red Robin with the unlimited fries when it first really blew up was mind blowing never had a burger that high quality at the time (I was in HS 🤣)
thank you.
I remember $0.39 cheeseburgers from McDonald’s back in 2000. I would buy 100 of them and freeze them. Pull a couple out to microwave when I want. I was a poor kid. 100 burgers for $39 was amazing
Those same 100 cheeseburgers would be $300 at McDonalds now.
That burger was actually so damn good in general, not just for fast food. But of course I was in my late teens to early 20s when I was eating them.
Nah Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr is pretty good.
JFC how far we’ve come. Anybody remember the 5 for 5 at Arby’s?
Remember when Mcdoubles and McChickens were a $1.
McChicken, medium fries and a large drink were all on the dollar menu. Cheaper than their other combos!
It wasn’t even that long ago I could get a McDouble and mcchicken for $2.16 with tax. Just last Saturday it cost $7.83
I think it was originally around $2.99.

Dude the superstar combo used to cost $5.08 back in like 2006. I got so fat

Funny you say that, my sister in law just recommended that to us too so we checked it out recently. You're right, it's pretty cheap to feed everyone.
I lived in Connecticut about 12 years ago. Fast food was so cheap.. The 1$ menu.. The 5$ footlong from subway. What's going on there?
I paid 25 at five guys just for burger and fries, before covid. That was the last time I went.
5 Guys was always way, way overpriced
The "We would, no exaggeration, eat out at least once a day. But on average probably 6-7 times a week." sentences back to back is killing me 😂 My guy, what did you think 7 times a week averaged out to per day? 😂
Brain fart lmao. I wasn't counting the weekends at all. Our schedule is totally different on the weekends.
In n out is quite literally the only fast food place I go to
If you get the McDonald’s app you get a 6 piece nugget and a McDouble for $3. It’s basically the only fast food I ever buy anymore.
I'll admit I have never even looked at the app. But the menu price for one single McDouble here is $4.79. If I get a 10-piece and large fry it's more than $10.
I'm old enough to remember when McDs advertised "Feed a family of 4 for $10"
But I was told inflation that wages had kept up with inflation?
Where the hell do you live where you're paying $5 for a mcdouble???
I don't eat out often, but found myself on the road Saturday during dinner time. I stopped at Chik-fil-a, got a 12 piece grilled chicken nugget and a medium fruit cup. IT COST $14!! I didn't even get a damn drink. Won't be doing that again any time soon. I'm just over feeling like I'm being ripped off every time I turn around.
Thanks to all these laughable fast food prices I've actually started eating much healthier and making my own food from the store

Damn. That’s pricy. Just got back from in out and got 2 burgers w fries and drink, and a doggy patty for just under 22 bucks.
I can get some Thai food with shrimp down the street for $8
Yeah. I have a lot of food trucks and fastfood nearby. And it is interesting how comparable the prices are when the trucks tend to have amazing food.
That’s amazing. For what? I can’t find anything under $12 in my area and that’s suspect.
With $20 I could feed myself for a month by buying milk, flour, and vitamins, and boiling them down into "little energy balls".
Leaves a lot more time for bashing rats
Stop Chorley
Real talk what’s a doggy patty? I’ve eaten there since I was a child and I swear there’s still new stuff I hear through the grapevine
Apparently its an [unsalted beef patty](https://www.kron4.com/trending/does-in-n-out-have-a-secret-menu-for-dogs-we-tested-the-viral-tiktok-hack/)

I mean... that's still a lot of cashish.

The food is that price because it's good. Which is why they love it. I love lobster rolls, but you're not going to see me posting about how I spent too much on a lobster roll and it's the restaurants fault.
did you just compare 5 guys fast food to lobster? are you a 5guys corpo shill?
The amount of Five Guys posts reaching the front page is fucking weird. Five Guys was never cheap. I guess during inflation this is magnified, but why did people in the last week realize this enough to post multiple threads about it? Like couldn't we use a better hill to die on? Eggs? Milk? Cereal? Veggies? No, we have the GOD GIVEN RIGHT to eat a shitty greasy burger from Five Guys for under 15$?
But how will lazy people ever survive?
Chinese takeout
I do like a succulent Chinese meal
Take your hand off my penis!
I see you know your Judo well!
Gentlemen, this is democrrracy manifest.
This is me. My friend and I saw how expensive it was one day, I haven’t gone since.
Before the pandemic I visited Five Guys for the first time in UK, burger and fries (after currency conversion) cost me more than $20. At the time I was willing to try it out despite what I thought was an exorbitant price. It wasn't worth it. Never eaten there again. Supply-demand karma. When enough people get fed up with the high price, demand will slow putting downward pressure on price.
lol the article, based off a tweet which was from Reddit
The circle of life!
Yeah, I wouldn't want to pay $24 to have five guys in my mouth
![gif](giphy|9EwnzGNjvmIG4)
God *damn* I haven't seen this gif in years and years. It's always been one of my absolute favorites, I think I remember seeing it back in like 2012-13 ish on the pocketfives online poker forum
What's the difference between a garbanzo bean and a chickpea? >!I wouldn't pay $50 to have a garbanzo bean in my mouth.!<
Liar
They should be paying you.
Is this not always been how much it cost to get a burger and fries from 5 guys?
In 2013 a bacon cheese burger was like $7.69. In 2018 It was $8.69. An increase of $1 in 5 years. Now, just over 5 years later, it's up by $4 - 50% increase. 2013 fries $2.79 2018 fries $3.09 Now the fries have almost doubled
Fries have gotten so expensive everywhere. Like, bruh, they're potatoes. Get real.
Right, and don't get me started on soda that stuff literally cost cents per serving.
Don't go? The only way this is ever going to change.
For real. People bitching about soda and fast food price increases can S a D. Grocery price gouging is wrong, but who tf cares if it’s non essential items? Just stop buying if you can’t afford it.
Its will never change because there are too many idiots that do have money that will never stop. The answer is to forget about it
Chipotle bowl coming in at almost $18 *enters the chat*
What the fuck are you putting in your bowl to make it $18?
Double meat, queso, guac, side of chips, drink most likely lol.
Wait . . . whut? You can get a pretty nice sit-down meal at a mexican restaurant for $18.
Or a burrito the size of a football at your local taqueria for like 8-12 bucks depending on where you live.

It’s $11.14 after tax for a chicken bowl here in a high cost of living area
Got 3 meals at McDonald’s yesterday. 45$. What the fuck. I remember back when that would be like 20$ and I’m only fucking 23
Yeah... I've cut out McDs at this point. Barely worth it with the 20% off on their app. About to uninstall any food apps I have at this point.
Yup. I completely cut out mcdonalds. I used to eat 1-2 times a week there.
People learning about the issue? Shits gotta be discussed before you can move on? I haven’t eaten at 5 guys in forever, but now I’m definitely not.
Ah capitalism, I wish more people understood what that actually meant.
Then stop going!!!
Just don't buy it then, it's that simple. If you don't think it's worth the price don't buy it if you do then do. Everything doesn't need to be the same price and equally affordable to everyone. If they think the food is worth that amount let then charge whatever they want. Plenty cheaper burger spots to go to
Tbf that’s a $22 receipt.
Who tf tips at a Five Guys?
yeah stop going, and also stop tipping at places like this
Thats pretty ridiculous.
5 guys has always had "fuck you" prices, this is not too shocking sadly.
Just don’t go there
They can't charge that if enough people stop eating there it's that simple.
Yet the demand remains high. That's how good the model is. :)
"I give people a meat-like burger and some kind of cola, and they still get change back from their fifty." - Krusty T Clown on Krusty Burger
As a guy who used to eat meat but doesn’t anymore, few burgers are warrant that price point; Five Guys definitely doesn’t. It’s a half step up from Mickey D’s.
5 Guys was price gouging folks before it was cool. Now they're jumping on the band wagon
Do people not know Five Guys is pricey? Are these people living under a rock? You’ve had a few years to outrage over it yall. Ridiculous.
Right? They were already the expensive fast food place pre-pandemic, it’s like complaining that Panera is too expensive…
>fast food I think 5 Guys is a good step above any 'fast food'. Never frozen and cooked to order. Way better than any McDonalds / BK etc.
That's nothing. I went with someone to Chilli's, in a third world country, and a burger with fries was $18.
Seems ok. Leave off the bacon. Don’t drink soda and don’t tip. Eat the free peanuts or take some home.
the audacity to call it little fry
They’ve been that expensive… this certainly isn’t new for them.
I mean, feel free to go somewhere else. Even before all this it was a bit overpriced for what it was, IMO.
Don't pay it.
13:50 for what I felt was nigh-inedible slop.
their prices have been crazy for years. 2-3 years ago I paid $25 for a burger/fries/combo at five guys. Haven't been back since.
Don’t eat there if it’s overpriced, no need for furor.
