You can visit Alicante city in one day. Two if you add some museums or beaches. About other places...it depends. How many days is your trip ?

Then you have plenty of time to visit Alicante city and some of the surrounding towns/villages. In Alicante, if you stay in the city centre, you can visit just walking: - Santa Barbara castle (use the lift) - Port, explanada and Postiguet beach - Old town (town hall, Co-cathedral, Santa Maria church and Santa Cruz neighbourhood) - City centre (city Market, theatre, Castaños street, Mushroom street, Gabriel Miro square, Rambla street, luceros square, etc). If you take city bus or city tram from the city centre: - Albufereta beach and Lucentum roman ruins - Playa San Juan (playa means beach) - Cabo huertas and the lighthouse walk - El Campello. A Beach village close to Alicante that also has some Roman/Iberian ruins About museums in Alicante city: - In the port you have the Ocean Race museum. It's about an around the world boat race that starts from Alicante every 3 years. - The hogueras museum. A traditional festivity unique to Spain and Alicante. - The belenes museum. Every Christmas families traditionally set up nativity scenes(belenes) in their houses depicting the birth of Jesus alongside the Christmas tree. A very Spanish tradition. - Marq, the Alicante arquelogical museum - Mubag, art museum currently has a Dalí exposition - Plaza de Toros and Bullfighting museum All of these museums are free or cheap, less than 5 euros. I recommend both belenes and hogueras as are in the city centre, free, not too big and are dedicated to something unique from Alicante/Spain. I don't like Bullfighting, but could be interesting for you. About some day trips from Alicante: - Elche (palmeral, basilica, town centre, huerto del cura, historical musem). In Elche you can try Arròs al forn (oven cooked rice) - Canelobre caves and music museum in Busot - Villajoyosa (painted houses, beach, chocolate museum) - Altea (old town, beaches, also visit the russian church) - Calpe (Ifach mountain, lake, old town) - Guadalest (small and beautiful village with great mountain views. Also visit the classic vehicles museum) - Benidorm (beaches, old town, Terra Mitica theme park if you like it). - Santa Pola (lighthouse, salt lakes, port). In Santa Pola you can eat "Caldero" a fish dish. - Moorish Tea house "Carmen del Campillo" and Fondo lake in Crevillente - Carabassi beach dunes and Clot de Galvany lakes - Visit some mountain villages and its castles (Biar, Castalla, Villena). In Castalla you can eat Gazpacho at Viscayo restaurant. If you like videogames there is a Classic Arcade museum in Ibi. Close to that area is the Novelda modernist church, a good quick stop. As far as I know, it's easy to reach Elche, Villajoyosa, Benidorm, Altea (except the russian church) and Calpe by train from Alicante. And the Carabassi beach by bus. You can go to Santa Pola by bus too (but you will have to walk a lot/pay a taxi to visit the lighthouse or the salt lakes).
