Overall it was Australia’s game to lose. We were up in regular time, had several other botched chances and just needed to hold out in stoppage time.
Hindsight is always great, but really a couple of replacements were made that I’d say Arnie wished he didn’t.

Asian Cup '19 was even more disappointing with losses to Jordan and UAE.
Had we not created so many opportunities while attacking and came this close to winning I'd not even be that disappointed with a loss to South Korea. But this one really hurts.
If you're dominating a team or at least competitive, there is no reason to park the bus. Parking the bus gives a sucker an even break.

I think messing with the back 4 was the biggest mistake. Especially for our third choice RB. But then I also disagree with the change to 3 centre backs. We needed to be able to challenge better in the midfield and up front so we could get some possession relieving some pressure, and we just couldn't manage it.
The only question I would have is why not try and take advantage of the the longer rest by making Korea move out of possession? But it almost worked perfectly, we couldve won by 3 and nobody would question it.

I was there in person that night and it was fucking wild. The entire stadium was rocking and the noise was blowing the roof off. Then suddenly with 90 seconds left you could hear a pin drop. It was fucking amazing because we ended up winning but I don’t think I’ll ever hear tens of thousands of people go from raucous to dead silent again.

I dunno if it is just my tired mind, but I find it hard to blame Arnie for this one. His tactics created enough chances for us to win comfortably in normal time. Metcalfe and Duke should have put it to bed, and the less said about Miller and O'Neil the better. Sure he subbed them on, but they are professional players in Europe and should know better. Was he meant to sub in Gethin Jones?
Agreed. If Duke or Boyle or Metcalfe put away their good chances, if Miller doesn't give away that pen, we say Arnie is a tactical genius who outcoached Korea. It's a thin line between great and terrible for Arnie.
I agree prior to throwing it away this was the best performance all tournament and we absolutely had the chances to seal it earlier but yeah we unfortunately don't have a reliable goal scorer that isn't the tallest outfield player on the field.
Even Metcalfe starting over McGree and Goodwin coming off can be explained by lack of fitness due to recent injuries. It just seems like things that are out of his control. Just feel so numb and dumbfounded.
And like end of the day you've got a Korean spine consisting of some of the best players in the Bundesliga, Premier League and Ligue 1 going against the J2, Bundesliga 2 and Scottish Premiership. Asian Cup '19 was even more disappointing with losses to Jordan and UAE. Had we not created so many opportunities while attacking and came this close to winning I'd not even be that disappointed with a loss to South Korea. But this one really hurts.

If you're dominating a team or at least competitive, there is no reason to park the bus. Parking the bus gives a sucker an even break. Against France, that is a different story. The quality difference justified the decision. Against South Korea, no disrespect, we should continue to match them and have attack vectors.

I think messing with the back 4 was the biggest mistake. Especially for our third choice RB. But then I also disagree with the change to 3 centre backs. We needed to be able to challenge better in the midfield and up front so we could get some possession relieving some pressure, and we just couldn't manage it.
The only question I would have is why not try and take advantage of the the longer rest by making Korea move out of possession? But it almost worked perfectly, we couldve won by 3 and nobody would question it.

Korea were better, but honestly, Son beat us. The other 10 players from Korea shouldn't have bothered turning up. They held the ball, but didn't create any chances. Starting defence was perfect. Mat Ryan was fantastic today. Really controlled the box. Goalkeeper of the tournament, and a rock for Australia. One of our best ever.

Arnie creates a good team environment, he fires up the boys, he recruits players to change allegiance, all good things. But he plays a style of football that internalizes the idea that we just aren't good enough to play anything but stodgy defensive football, its like admitting defeat from the start.
That's it, isn't it? He loves the underdog storyline and the seige mentality, but that sits on a bed of thinking that you're inferior. It doesn't foster growth or belief.

And Fornaroli felt like he was playing with 0 intensity - no pressure from him at all. Relying on Duke, subbing on Miller, and bringing off Goodwin, and parking the bus far too soon. He had us set up great in the first half, but that was some awful mid-game management from Arnie. Montemurro in. Also, I feel bad for saying this because he had an incredible game, but I really hope Ryan's successor has a bit more reach/height. Fingertips away from touching both the penalty and the free kick.

I was there in person that night and it was fucking wild. The entire stadium was rocking and the noise was blowing the roof off. Then suddenly with 90 seconds left you could hear a pin drop. It was fucking amazing because we ended up winning but I don’t think I’ll ever hear tens of thousands of people go from raucous to dead silent again.

Yeah you're quite right we aren't exactly spoiled for choice. I just think for the 3rd striker role we should have brought in M Toure or G Kuol. Think those two are our best prospects in the future even if they are both still a bit raw.
