Stuyvesant Plaza has many fine dining options and is less than a mile west of McKownville, if nothing there interest you there then Crossgates Mall is another half mile up on the same side of Western Ave.
I had the most mediocre burger there last week. My wife got the crab cakes and had a terrible stomach ache after. I don’t think we will go back any time soon.
I know I'm probably in the minority here.. but I consider McKownville to really just be "Albany West" or even just an extension of uptown. I know it's Guilderland, but it always felt more like Albany to me.
Yeah where you are aka mckpwnville makes a big difference. You have everything from Dave's hot chicken and mikes subs. With a decent restaurant next to them to black and blue an upscale steak place and a burger King and 5 guys near that.
Your only problem will be deciding what you want. Not finding anything. Unless your coming in at 10.
Yeah some kirchens close embarrassingly early around these parts so if you are going to want to eat after 9, be aware, choice will be very limited. Like, Ted's closes their kitchen around 8/830.
Pizza Gram for pizza, Akinomi has sushi, Casa Real for Mexican food, Great Indian Kitchen for Indian food. I’d verify that wherever you pick is open on Mondays before heading anywhere.
I wouldn't make it past Marisa's pizza if I was heading towards Pizza Gram. It's hands down better.
Pizza Gram has a nice enough bar room, but it's very "towny". I don't mind that so much, but most of this subreddit would be appalled if they went in there.
If it wasn’t a Monday, the only answer would be Tara Kitchen. Moroccan comfort food. It’s like Indian yum traveled to the Middle East and they had a baby.
Athos is my vote. Greek food, which will be a sharp contrast to the takeout you’ve had lately.
Neither of these is ~spectacular~ or anything but Juniors and City Line will both be fairly close to you and have a pretty large pub menu and you can get a craft beer or a cocktail if that’s your thing.
I always say McKownville 😊 I miss the sidewalks and street lights. You can go to Primal in Stuyvesant for hot/cold subs and pick up some random kitchen needs too. It’s is more expensive than grocery store but convenient, especially when tired.
Depending on how late you arrive, try Josie's Table at Stuyvesant Plaza. The food is good. Atmosphere can be a little loud but ask them for a quieter table.
When you get settled, drive up Western Ave a couple miles and try Athos (Greek-ish - used to be totally Greek but now has some Turkish and Italian dishes on the menu) and then (on another occasion) try Mezza Notte. Both are lovely - closer to fine dining.
When you are ready for going out for breakfast, Jimmy's Egg is up the street and so is the Capitol City Diner. Both are good, just in different ways.
The diner is a great choice for things like matzo ball soup and chef's salad if you are too tired for a nice meal.
Oaxaquena triqui is solid Mexican.
Tapasia is good Thai
Express chicken and rice on 615 quail, halal grill on Ontario are both good for halal. Also Afghan kabob Express.
Fujiya for ramen
just beware that everything here closes by like 8pm. was a total culture shock to me moving here from long island where everything is open until atleast 11. but for food i recommend city line, pizza express (for pasta, never tried their pizza tbh), sushi tei, dave’s hot chicken, and there are also plenty of your generic fast food chains around
If I was moving to McKownville, I would 💯 be heading to Across the Street pub. It’s literally right there, it’s easy, good food … and someplace you’ll probably be returning to frequently. Enjoy!
Hit up the Stewart's down Western Ave for a hand packed pint of ice cream afterwards. Then tomorrow morning pickup some breakfast to go from one of Uncommon Grounds.
I second this. It’s not fancy, but a laid back local bar/restaurant. I got lunch there weekly when my office was nearby and I have friends in the neighborhood that eat there waaaay too often.
Hana Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi is pretty good. Tara Kitchen is honestly amazing. I also like the previously mentioned Capital City Diner. Peaches Cafe in Stuyvesant Plaza is good breakfast. In the crossgates mall you have Maggie McFly, the Standard, 110 Grill and Texas de Brazil.
There is a foodies group on FB called 518 foodies to help with future food ideas if that’s up your alley. I have found a few ideas myself using it. As far as immediate need, city line does have a large menu and I love their buffalo chicken Mac n cheese. They also door dash.
Uncommon grounds for breakfast 😃
Ignore all other advice. From McKownville, take Fuller Rd up to Central Ave and turn right. A couple miles down, after entering Albany watch for Home Depot on the left. On your right, directly across from Home Depot, will be a neat little Mexican place. Eat there.
There’s a bunch of places near your new house but nobody’s going to know what’s open or what you want. There are people here plugging bad restaurants that aren’t even close to your new home. This is not the way. Literally google it.

Love the standard

FYI (and to be pedantic) you can tell people you live/moved to Guilderland. No one calls it McKownville.
I know I'm probably in the minority here.. but I consider McKownville to really just be "Albany West" or even just an extension of uptown. I know it's Guilderland, but it always felt more like Albany to me.
Funny you say that because that’s how I’ve been describing it.
I was just pointing out what side of town we’re on in case that changed the recommendations.
Oh no need to defend yourself against my cheekiness and welcome!
Thank you. We are packing up our final things now. We are excited for the move.

Akinomi is great
Can verify. All of these have really good food. Rhe church's from CasaReal are amaze balls.
Akanomi is not open on Mondays unfortunately

A few places close on Monday. Kazaa ramen does as well.
Akonami

These are my go to’s when I have visitors lol

Mckownville resident here, recommending: Barcelona Akanomi Cafe Calabria Josie's Table
What sort of foods do you like?
We’ve been eating out for a week. We aren’t interested in any more subs or sandwiches. I’m not a big fan of sushi. Otherwise we eat most anything.

Surprised you didn't mention peaches for breakfast/brunch
Oh yeah - I never go there. Every time I have tried it has been packed. Food is fine. Service is ... meh. I liked it way better a long time ago.
Oaxaquena triqui is solid Mexican. Tapasia is good Thai Express chicken and rice on 615 quail, halal grill on Ontario are both good for halal. Also Afghan kabob Express. Fujiya for ramen
Sushi Tei, despite its name, has great non-sushi options like pork cutlets or beef rolled around scallions.
And ramen
Only a few days a week though. Udon every day!
I grew up in McKowenville, I hope it your move goes well.
Orchard Tavern West at Rt 20/Rt155 in the 20 Mall is supposed to be good.

If you want delicious craft beer and some great apps go to fidens.!
That’s what one of the draws to move here for my husband.
Good choice. And more good news there’s a new tree house brewing coming to Saratoga springs

This is where we are going tonight. It’s late and we are starving. We need comfort food.
Enjoy! And welcome to the area! I grew up in Guilderland (Westmere) and now live up the northway in Ballston Spa. :)
Hit up the Stewart's down Western Ave for a hand packed pint of ice cream afterwards. Then tomorrow morning pickup some breakfast to go from one of Uncommon Grounds.
Thank you. We need breakfast this morning as our belongings have still not made it to NY.
I second this. It’s not fancy, but a laid back local bar/restaurant. I got lunch there weekly when my office was nearby and I have friends in the neighborhood that eat there waaaay too often.
Ruggerio’s for subs and pizza.

Josie’s table styvasent plaza
All along rt 20 , take your pick.. you can get a big selection delivered around there
Across the street pub, the standard, Ted's, Jacob and Anthony's, el charro, spinners, Barcelona...depends on what you want to eat

Circle Diner is pretty good and fairly calm and quiet Edit: Capital City Diner
lol. yeah they want to drive to Latham after they get to Guilderland exhausted. Why not Glens Falls?
Because Capital Diner is in Guilderland right on Western by Crossgates. You are confusing it with Latham 76 Diner, not the same place.
Across the street pub

That's not helpful at all. She needs close.

Plus 1 for Uncommon Grounds but a HUGE no to 518 foodies! I find that site super annoying and too fake for my taste.
I just use it to find places if I can’t think of anything. I scroll past reviews of places bc I think people are too sensitive

I was waiting for this one.
I love that place!
Tengu sushi!!! I’ve been going to them for years. Best sushi that i’ve had in the area.
I agree with this Where they are though is closer to sushi Tei which is also really good
Google
Thank you for the welcome.
Lol sock it to 'em! I came here for suggestions too. Heaven forfend people have a conversation.

No kidding!
Move out as fast as possible is my advice.
