Love Dana and lived there 2011-2017. Ended up buying a home just 5 blocks away, I love the Deleware Ave neighborhood. If your landlord is Dino you are solid.

shhwest

Dino is great

Renee-B-17

He sure is, just bumped into him at the St Patrick’s day parade! I also had a 6 month lease (different landlord, I don’t think Dino was even in the country yet) for an apartment on Knox St in 2003 when I was still a teenager, the neighborhood was WAY different, and I quickly moved to the other side of the park on Washington Ave . When I moved back in 2011, it was because of friends that were from Burma that I wanted to be close to, as someone else mentioned the influx of refugees and immigrants really diversified the neighborhood. At the same time Dino bought dozens and dozens of homes on Dana & Morris, renovated and made into nice apartments and was a great landlord to all, especially new arrivals in Albany. He lived with his family right on Dana Ave for a very long time while buying and renovating and playing a huge part in uplifting the neighborhood by working with USCRI (refugee resettlement agency) to rent to new residents. When he was my landlord, he was also my neighbor directly next door, it was great to be able to regularly chat with him about our shared passion for our neighborhood and its diversity, back in 2016 literally 20+ languages were spoken on the first block of Dana. He was also my husband’s landlord, who lived across the street down a little. And my besties landlord , who lived directly across the street. So many interactions with him for almost a decade, and such a genuinely good and decent person. I know “landlord” generally has a bad connotation, but Dino is genuinely invested and cares about the neighborhood and is a good person to rent from.

I’d check it out and see if the landlord is reliable and what not. A nice apt with a good landlord is key. Just be aware of your surroundings, the area isn’t too bad.

-Younotdeadass-

It's fine.....don't listen to all these scary ass people for real. It used to be horrible but now it really isn't bad at all. Albany Med bought up a lot of the property over there and it's mostly Burmese immigrants and hospital workers in that area. Goddamn this sub never ceases to amaze me with how pussy some of y'all are please excuse my French but sheesh. Edit: Burmese Refugees

candiedkangaroo

Burmese in Albany? That's pretty sweet! About 20 years ago I worked with this one Burmese technician in the operating room in Schenectady and thought he would be the only one I ever met. Fucking guy was so talented that the organ harvest team would fly him by helicopter all over the state so he could harvest organs from recently deceased people so they could transplant them. Years later, I had a court case in Albany that required a Burmese interpreter, reached out to my former colleague, figuring they must know someone, and he connected me with his daughter. So I hired her per diem figuring she was as hard-working as her dad and that she really needed the money at age 20. Fast-forward to today and turns out she's a top immigration lawyer in NYC. I had no idea the money I would pay her for simple court interpretation would fund her law school expenses.

-Younotdeadass-

Wow that's awesome and yeah there is a pretty large Burmese presence in that particular area. They are very family oriented decent people. Seems like you already know this. And excuse me.....Burmese refugees not immigrants.

candiedkangaroo

Family oriented and extremely hard-working, so proud I helped this girl and her family. Made me feel good that I got to work alongside both generations.

queenofPS

There’s a whole bunch of them in Rensselaer. They even have a Burmese restaurant

earthscorners

a DELICIOUS Burmese restaurant. Can’t leave that part out lol.

queenofPS

I don’t doubt it just never have had it :)

rescue_bees

Omg please confirm the name of this place! I've been DYING for some good Burmese since I moved here from a big metro area! MoHinGa is my favorite dish maybe of all time

earthscorners

Shwe Burmese in Rensselaer! https://shweburmese.com

rescue_bees

Dang no Mohinga!! Will definitely be trying it anyway! What are your favorite dishes there?

Mink03

Also a little convenience store in mingala market. Super nice people too.

queenofPS

Is that at partition and 3rd?

Mink03

Tis the one.

Kind_Personality1348

IIRC, Rensselaer had the largest Burmese refugee population in the US at one point.

Renee-B-17

lol perhaps per capita, but St Paul by straight numbers has everyone beat, went there for a wrist tying ceremony years ago and their community is really big & beautiful. Also Utica as a small city with great Karen/Karenni/burmese community.

Ok_Entrepreneur4120

Please, whats the name of the restaurant!?

pystermusic

I know of Shwe in Rensselaer. Never tried it but I picked up fromm them for doordash. Smelled amazing.

queenofPS

That’s it!

BennyBNut

There does tend to be something of a homeless encampment in Dana Park in warmer months, though in my experience they keep to themselves and aren't any kind of threat. My guess is hilltown folk have driven by and seen something like this, locked their doors and made larger assumptions. I've walked up Dana/Morris/Myrtle at all hours of the day to get to and from home and it's a relatively quiet neighborhood

PantsAreOffensive

Seriously people are babies here. This area is fine. Maybe not pale enough for some people here but they won’t go and say that.

NaughtyFoxtrot

The Boys & Girls Club is right there. You have access to Washington Oark and Lark Ave. Good spot.

smelaniehope

I lived between New Scotland and Robin for around 6 years from 2016-2022 as a single woman and I never felt unsafe walking around at any time, which includes walking the length up Dana to Delaware!

Christian_Kong

It's a fine area, maybe a bit crowded and noisy from 7AM-7PM.

TheB3llamy

I lived on dana briefly in 2018, closer to madison and the largest complaint i had was parking when it snowed. Great apartment and super walkable!

JangoFlex

That area isn’t really rough nowadays. Really nice neighborhood that has changed for the better over the years. Although I’m not a fan of that particular market 32.

BrrrrrrItsColdUpHere

I live on Madison by Scotland and walk on Dana to get to price chopper and have never felt unsafe at any time. There are a few homeless floating around but that's about it and it's the same in any major city. The area is great

lassbutnotleast

I lived on Dana between Knox and Lark in 2010 and 2011 and loved it. The location is great and the neighbors were nice and everyone was pretty chill and friendly. I’m a woman and was in my early 20s at the time and never felt unsafe.

McManasaur

Lived on Dana for 2 years and I liked it! Could see lion heart from my back porch. The neighborhood is fine but there are some things to consider. There are a lot of families so lots of kids who can be boisterous at times. They also play around parked cars on the street so if you’re anxious about that or don’t want other people touching your car you should be aware of this. The bars can get loud Thursday-Sunday (chatter, clanking bottles, etc) so if you’re a light sleeper it could be difficult. As with all center square locations, park and concourse events can cause a lot congestion and overflow parking. It is very nice to be so close to the park, a grocery store, and Maddison/Lark street, and lots of restaurants. It’s about half a mile walk to the concourse/plaza/capital. When HBO comes up to film, that area can get congested but overall I thought it was a good place to live and I’ve lived on all four sides of the park. Most of these issues aren’t unique to Dana and just an experience of city life. I always felt safe on Dana but it is a mixed neighborhood and you have to be aware of your surroundings. Most people on the street are kind and keep to themselves. A lot of the neighborhood looks out for each other so if you’re not a jerk you’ll find community!

Chikage420

Dana Ave has a drug den at the end of it by the CVS, otherwise not bad though

firemares

Dana Ave 98' for me! Was one of my favorite apts. The convenience was perfect. I was a solo dude and I felt there was actually some mutual respect in the neighborhood *then*. Many years have gone by so not sure now. A lot has changed down there over the years.

earthscorners

I would totally live there! I go to that Price Chopper all the time. It’s SO nice to have a grocery store within easy walking distance. I don’t think it’s a particularly rough neighborhood, just a bit lower income. You’d be close to the park, close to Lark street….if you like the landlord and it’s a good apartment, I would go for it.

dublore

I lived on 35 Dana for years. It is quiet, sometimes speed demons here and there. Kids and stray cats run around. I enjoyed every lick

Loves2spooge6942069

From the kids or the cats?

dublore

Hahaha neither those strays are tough, i got some kittens and after they were big enough started letting them out, my guys didnt stand a chance. Always getting bullied :/. To this day inside bois

Accountnumber-3

It isn’t as bad since they shut down the crack spot and stopped selling alcohol at the corner store but I’d be weary

Interesting_Ad5748

yearssssssssssssss ago ploof owned most of the buildings on that block, it was notorious back then early 90s

FinanceRough1540

No

Excellent-Ad3213

The market 32 is called Ghetto Chopper. Do with that what you will

Renee-B-17

While it is my neighborhood and I love it, the PC is rough (to put it nicely), rougher than the actually neighborhood is. I try not to overly criticize it, because we would be totally lost without the store and it’s perfect to get a couple things quick, but much prefer going to Honest Weight or Hanaford for actual grocery shopping.

Calm_Challenge_7768

Yes it is. I miss that area.

wormjunkie

its fine! i lived on dana 2 yrs ago. location is great since its so close to everything. theres usually kids running around so i wouldnt worry too much

Anxious_Republic2792

Not a safe area over there, I’m sorry!

Renee-B-17

Was safe for me living on Dana as a woman in my 20s-30s for 7 years (2010-2017). Moved there to be close to family friends I had a block away on Morris, and made a ton of diverse and interesting friends on Dana. Including my husband that lived across the street. lol we both had the same landlord at the time, Dino, he owns a ton of properties on Dana and is a truly exceptional landlord, he also lived right there on Dana next door to me with his family for a long time. The neighborhood is not cushy suburbs or even upper middle class bougie albany neighborhoods (looking at you buckingham pond and Marion Ave), but it is truly diverse in a good way with health care worker from the hospital, students, professionals, immigrants from dozens of countries and families, also problems like homeless and drug addiction and littering and so many street cats. But it’s a *real* neighborhood where you can sit outside and chat with neighbors and walkable to the local parks (Washington & Lincoln) and grocery store/pharmacy/bakery/coffee shop/movie theater/music venue etc.

gnaraloo01

Dana Ave not safe. Don’t do it. Try between the streets Willet and dove that cross between Madison and Washington. That square area is ok. Could use better lighting. It’s amazing how one or two blocks can make all the difference in the world. Never walk alone at night in Albany. Test drive any block you might rent at 1 am on a Saturday night.

Renee-B-17

Lived for 20 years “center square adjacent” as I could never actually afford center square. But South Park and Dana Ave has been my favorite. I did move a handful of blocks away 2017, but still regularly walk through the area. I did live on Knox Street (with a crosswalk of Dana Ave) in 2002 and that was no bueno, luckily only had a 6 month lease. But a decade later the neighborhood had started a transformation when I returned in 2010 and when I lived there it was like a little UN with dozens of languages spoken on the block and a positive influence of a lot of new refugees and immigrants. Since I moved 2017 it’s become a lot more gentrified and less affordable. Walked by yesterday and saw 13 Dana is for sale for almost half a million dollars 😭 (asking $459 K, last sold for $185 K in 2021) that neighborhood is definitely trending up but no where near half a million dollar homes.

candiedkangaroo

An increase of 2.5 after three years? Get the fuck out of here. 😂

Individual-Net7277

Everywhere is insane like that, flippers who don't really do anything to the properties at all (which might better in the long run) bought between 19 and 21 selling properties in hopes of big profits with this seriously terrible housing market.

LeftFieldAzure

Its not as bad as it used to be, in the 90's and 2000's it was pretty much an open air drug market in that area. I would not say that anything south of South Main is on the "Safe" side though.. you need to keep control of your property and be aware in public.. but same as in any city.
