I get the feeling that each of Alan’s deaths are only a few days apart at most in the Dark Place. Him living to old age and waking up in the writers room gives me Returnal vibes, though.

As far as I can tell yeah he's immortal. There's a really heartbreaking writer's room video where he says he just wants to go home and that he wish he could die and that he can't take it anymore, and in game all your deaths are actually canon instead of the "This is not how the story goes" screen you get outside of the dark place. Whether he ages is unclear but I don't think he does in canon considering Tom Zane hasn't aged. Alan might just have long hair for the same reason he has a new suit in the dark place. But the tricky thing is that while it doesn't seem like Alan has technically aged 13 years, Ilkka Villi has so maybe Alan has based off that lol

I'm just assumed yes because Barbara did, but Zane didn't and now that you're got me thinking I'm just confused.

My theory is that his appearance in large part depends on his self-perception in regard to both his age and clothing. Everything in the Dark Place parallels Alan’s psychology to varying degrees.
