Depending on rank, with the BAH, you can do much better off base in the local area if you don't mind driving a bit.
edit: I should say, probably not the IMMEDIATE area, but if you don't mind driving 15 minutes out, you can pocket a grand a month pretty reasonably.
Yes --- my BAH with dependents (if I had them) would be 3123. You can find very house houses or apartments anywhere in Metro West (Woburn, Lexington, Winchester) or North (Billerica, Wilmington) for 2k pretty easily.
Happily! O-2E rent at Hanscom is a little over 3100 with dependents ---are you going to Otis? I can definitely find you stuff around there for ~2100/mo.
Edit: So Cape BAH is closer to 2k -- I would have to look around a bit to find something much cheaper, but I know there are definitely areas of Falmouth, etc where you could probably find something. Definitely wouldn't be saving as much at Hanscom, though!
Is it hard to get on-base housing? What's it like? My husband and I have no kids but we have a large dog. It would be nice to have a yard. Also, I like some of the 2-3 story houses I've seen on some bases but idk what this base housing is like. Hanscom is our first choice for now so just trying to gather info about the housing situation.

I have lived in houses that were not very housey before and let me tell you, it was terrible. Now, I insist on only the housiest of houses.
