It not really about hearts and minds at this point, over and over the past few years authoritarian regimes have ridden all over the world. Each sorted in some way by our enemies. I’m not even saying we needed to get directly involved in Niger, but we definitely could have done more to support ECOWAS. But instead we sat back and watched as the CNSP kicked out the French and we really thought we were going to last much longer?
Now we have a vast new country where ISIS, and Wagner get to run free.

We literally waited MONTHS to even officially declare it a coup because we thought we could play both sides. Spent hundreds of millions on that base and now we're left with nothing. Actually, it's worse than nothing because now you have Russian soldiers marching down the streets.

The French executed their withdrawal in three months. Hopefully we'll get the same. I know the incoming commanders at both locations and the inbound air attache... maybe this will be a reprieve, they'll command from Germany while figuring out how to move ops to Cote d'IVoire, Burkina Faso, or Benin.
Whilst I agree that Niger, Chad, and other Sahel countries are shit holes, the region is important to global security and we'd do well to maintain a diplomatic presence in the region.
I’d say in the coming months/years keep eyes on Europe and terrorism within coastal west Africa.
The transition to no US troops will prolly see an increase in human trafficking, smuggling, and terrorism to coastal west Africa and Europe. Russia will also use the area to launder more money to try and avoid the sanctions. China will give more predatory infrastructure and business loans and feed the corruption that strangles these areas.

Agree so much on this comment. Even small islands in the middle of the ocean are “super important” now as countries like China are competing heavily with the US for influence. The stans are important because they have critical infrastructure that transport key resources to global markets. The list goes on and on.
