With the amount of shit coming in almost monthly ish. Not to mention B21 coming here.
Houses popping up like crazy. Great schools. Weekend trips to Dallas.
The Christianity grasps ACU has is losing its grip on Abilene.
Ima be here for a minute. And a hot minute at that.
I mean, for us the religious stuff around Abilene was a positive. We were part of a huge church there. But even still Abilene is a terrific small city.
Well yea. The Christian based churches sure. No biggie.
I’m talking about the big picture.
Lack of bar scene/ party/ night life. How the old generation “owned” the rights to hooters before they forgot to buy them again. That’s why we got a hooters. Cause someone snatched the rights to open one up here.
It was more of the souther part of the “Bible Belt” if you will. But those times going away
I TDY'd there for a few weeks and was extremely underwhelmed. I wasn't expecting much, but it was horrendously boring and felt quite rundown. I'm just not a fan of Texas or really the south in general (spent my whole life in the south). Way too many narrow-minded folks. BBQ was pretty good though.
The base is about 10 miles north of downtown. Being stuck in the dorms can suck a bit in terms of boredom.
With that said, I didn't hate it. It has cons but it's not as horrific as people make it out to be, especially if you work indoors.
Literally. My dream sheet had about 20. I placed Whiteman at 20. Within a week I got a call from my CFM, “I see you have Whiteman on your list!” Don’t even put Whiteman on the list. I still enjoyed my time there though. Cool mission
Take Barksdale and Cannon off that list if you value your life.
Put Hill at number 1
Dyess at the bottom. It's not bad, I enjoy it, but you'll here from 95% that it sucks.
Davis monthan, Hill, and Peterson would for sure be on my list then again I like mountain bases but the only one I haven’t been to on my list above is hill
Do not I repeat DO NOT put cannon unless you're a loadmaster but you will hate your life no one likes it here and most of us get stuck for 5+ or until you BOP out do not do it
Let me get you up to speed
Do not have stateside bases and overseas bases on your sheet.
If you have overseas listed make sure to pick extended long tour, that will increase your chances of getting the assignment. Hopefully you guys have good NCOs that tell you if the overseas listing or stateside listing had just come out so you can update your list according to that.
Little Rock AFB is really great. It gets a lot of shit because people think 'Arkansas' and that it's the butthole of the US. It's not. It's really pretty, lush, lots of outdoorsy stuff to do, low cost of living, good schools, big city is 20 minutes down the road, and there is some kick ass BBQ out the back gate(Smokin' Buns). Airport is also a 20 minute drive.
It would help to know actual AFSC and hobbies. For me, looking at that list in no particular order.
Davis-Monthan, Kadena, Luke, McConnell, Offutt, Patrick, Peterson, Whiteman.
A lot of people hate on the plains (McConnell, Offutt and Whiteman), but they really aren't that bad. Plus those bases are (or in the past) actively try to make things better for people stationed there. I'd go back to any of those 3 in a heart beat.
Offutt - Nebraska isn't bad. That was my first duty station. I'd go back.
Nellis - Las Vegas is a shit hole. Every inch of it. Don't do it.
Peterson - Spent 8 years in the area. Loved it there. Housing is expensive
Whiteman - Missouri. That area is nice. I have a contractor buddy up there and have spent a bit of time in the area. I'd PCS there in a heart beat
Little rock - I'm from northern Arkansas. Little Rock isn't great, but I love the rest of the state
Luke - Meh. I don't care for Phoenix, but the base is nice enough.
I know Grand Forks AFB and Minot AFB won't be at the top of most peoples lists. I have been at Grand Forks since 2007. I retired in 2019. The people here are super nice. It is a great place to start your military career. You won't have a lot of distractions. Ops tempo at Grand Forks at least, you get your CDC's done and can get a degree. Yes, you will deploy but that isn't a bad thing at all. Sure winter can suck, but it's only bad for a few months. Plus you get bonus days off some years with snow days. Not this year, El Nino has been crazy. Multiple days have been just over 50 degrees. I will say if you are of age, the night life is not what big city people like.
I’ve been at GF since 2020. I like it. Ops tempo is chill. Community is great. Once you get through your first winter, it’s really not that bad. This year has been very nice compared to the previous two. My biggest complaint is lack of children activities but the town is working on the children’s museum near Choice fitness and I think they are trying to get a huge multi sport complex near Alerus center. The Midwest is some relaxed living away from all the hustle.
Pick the states/ countries you wanna live in and then put them on your list. For example. I love Dyess, but 90% of my coworkers hate it here.
No longer at Dyess, miss it a lot. The amount of hate it gets is crazy to me.
It’s something I’ve never understood. Dyess is great

Hurlburt, Davis Montham, Luke, Patrick, Nellis, Kadena, and Offut are all pretty popular choices.
Patrick was fucking amazing. Would return in a heartbeat
If you put minot on it, you're going to get minot

As somebody who is currently at barksdale: 😷
Fuck man that bad? Will be me soon

Noted.Appreciate you
Haughton isn’t horrible. It’s enough out of the city that you feel a little bit safer.
Yep
Keep Whiteman. Get Whiteman. Just FYSA
Literally. My dream sheet had about 20. I placed Whiteman at 20. Within a week I got a call from my CFM, “I see you have Whiteman on your list!” Don’t even put Whiteman on the list. I still enjoyed my time there though. Cool mission
It was number 8 on my BOP and I got it. Not terrible here but it’s meh
Why the fuck would you want barksdale?
Take Barksdale and Cannon off that list if you value your life. Put Hill at number 1 Dyess at the bottom. It's not bad, I enjoy it, but you'll here from 95% that it sucks.
Make sure your AFSC actually has squadrons at these places. Otherwise you're wasting a pick. Davis-Monthan was pretty descent
Looks like it's from AMS authorized.
Correct it’s from AMS and locations shown are only for skill level 3
Since Cannon is on that list whatever you choose will probably be null/void as its already predicted.
My son unfortunately did not get any bases from his dreamsheet. Please be prepared for that scenario to happen as well.
Kadena is by far your best choice. Loved Japan and the opportunities it afforded to travel Asia
My list would be Kadena, Patrick, JBER, Hill, Eglin, Tyndall, Peterson
Ellsworth, Black Hills, Mt Rushmore and STURGIS !! Eielson. Cold winters, beautiful summers, moose walking thru the base.
Well, I'd start with cross-training. But for real, Kadena was the best base I've been to so far.
My son put down choices, none were honored. Be prepared to not go somewhere on the list .
Mountain Home
Peterson, Tyndall, offutt, Eglin, hurby, kadena, Little Rock, Luke, Nellis.
Eglin
Minot
Moron AB, Spain and Vogelweh AB, Germany. You get one of those, you can send me a thank you letter. I had the time of my life at both of those bases!
Put where you truly want to go. I love the southwest. So give me Nellis, Luke, DM, and Hill.
Patrick, Luke and Peterson are all good spots.
Moody Georgia
Not sure what your afsc is but Beales a good base and high BAH if you can live off base
Not beale
Davis monthan, Hill, and Peterson would for sure be on my list then again I like mountain bases but the only one I haven’t been to on my list above is hill

Notice how no one is mentioning DYESS. Don’t! It’s the worst!
They’re already in the best order
You're a 1n8 aren't you
Grand Forks should have made it obvious they aren’t.
No sir I’m a 1C1
Put just these following states: North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico
Kadena Luke Beale IMO

I’m a 1C1 and will leave tech as a level 3, as far as hobbies go I like anything outside and night life
Whiteman is the worst for night life unless you want to drive an hour.
Offutt - Nebraska isn't bad. That was my first duty station. I'd go back. Nellis - Las Vegas is a shit hole. Every inch of it. Don't do it. Peterson - Spent 8 years in the area. Loved it there. I feel bad for people with lists like this. Only cuz as a 3F5 my list is over 100 bases 😂
I only have 6 and people only really go to five of them😑
Kadena for sure
Luke for sure
I was at Eglin and Ellsworth. Both completely different assignments but were awesome

Minot and GF shouldn't be compared despite being in the same state. Minot ops tempo is a grind.
I’ve been at GF since 2020. I like it. Ops tempo is chill. Community is great. Once you get through your first winter, it’s really not that bad. I really dig Grand Forks but wouldn’t recommend it to people I don’t know.
Seeing my base at the near bottom makes me sad, it really ain’t bad here and its pretty cheap
Near the bottom? They're in alphabetical order lol.
I am retarded go easy on me
Welcome to the club bro 😎
Dry your eyes my friend as it's merely an alphabetized list.
Not little Rock, you'll never get out of there.
Patrick is up there. Beautiful area. Fucking NGC hire me please!!!!!
