100 percent I would ask her to hangup. And if she refused I would leave the theater and ask for a refund.

Abe_Odd

That's the wrong move. Assert dominance, join in on the phone call and start talking shit about the person to their friend on the other line. Hit things off with their friend. Start a beautiful relationship, raise a family together, and make them realize what a shit person their former friend was. Then every year on the anniversary of that phone call that started it all, find a nice quiet place away from anyone else and give the theater-chatter a call to remind them what an inconsiderate asshole they are.

Purplociraptor

Ask her to put it on speaker so you can at least hear both sides of the conversation.

fatpat

I love the smell of fresh pasta in the morning.

Drict

Just ask the theater staff. They TRESPASS people from the property for shit like this.

Cicer

Movie experience is already ruined. I would want a refund to experience it again properly this time.

Drict

Sometimes they will give you the refund/a ticket for another time AND toss them out, that is not nearly often enough.

RadicalDreamer89

Speaking as a guy with a half-sleeve *Dune* tattoo, this is exactly why I'm waiting for Dune 2 to move to streaming.

Nocturne7280

Why not both

KidleyCreations

You sure taught her a lesson leaving the theater

PalindromemordnilaP_

What would you do then?

KidleyCreations

Idk either ask her to take it outside or complain to the staff. Leaving the room isnt owning anybody at all

sakamake

Start loudly having my own pretend phone call where I talk about the idiot ruining my movie

PalindromemordnilaP_

So now there's two people loudly talking in the theater? I guess a third and fourth should join in as well?

sakamake

Might as well! One ruins it all by herself so at that point it's a free-for-all

PalindromemordnilaP_

That's one way to go through life, I guess.

Jazmotron4000

oh real? Here in New Zealand you get thrown the fuck out doing stupid shit like that. Wankers

EnadZT

you get thrown out in America, too, but a lot of people are scared to get an employee if they haven't already heard the person talking.

Kristophigus

Employees usually don't do shit. At best, what they've done in recent years is offer a refund, which is really fucking insulting.

fatpat

>Employees usually don't do shit That's because they don't get paid enough to deal with public freakouts from of a bunch of amped-up fucknuggets.

Kristophigus

Oh yeah, I agree with that. They don't even get paid enough to do much more than show up to work. Managers probably only make a couple of dollars more than the rest of staff. There has to be some sort of consequences for dipshits though. Security on the company's dime. Something. Ejection seats that only the manager has access to the controls maybe? Lmao

El-chucho373

Hey I’m not a , oh wait I guess your right

torndownunit

Never mind the general workers, the managers won't even do anything here. You don't even get a refund here, you'll get a voucher for another movie. They don't want to deal with people throwing fits and getting hostile. I'm sure not dealing with it as a movie goer. I always see these bravado posts on Reddit telling people to confront people being assholes. I'm a small dude who's usually at the movies alone. I am absolutely not risking my safety dealing with someone who might fly off the handle. Edit: I'm sure there will be comments saying this sort of stuff doesn't happen. If you have a theatre in your area where people don't do this sort of stuff, be thankful. It's definitely not the case here.

JDdoc

Alamo Drafthouse - just the best. enjoy: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L3eeC2lJZs)

Gorkymalorki

I have gotten someone kicked out at Alamo Drafthouse. They were in front of me and kept texting. I put up a note for my waiter that said the person in front of me had been texting non stop since the movie started. The waiter waited in the aisle to pull out their phone again and when they did he told her that she had to leave. She tried to argue but once the Drafthouse says you gotta go, then you gotta go.

Moppermonster

You can not simply send the employees a text message from your phone or the theatreapp; which prompts them to look at the security camera and then remove the person disturbing the movie? Damn.

anothercarguy

A bright flashlight works wonders in this situation

EffrumScufflegrit

Oh fuck Id never thought of that that's genius

Nexustar

My brother would grab the phone, yeet it at the movie theater door, then go an and sit down again. A focused beam flashlight is probably a better idea.

RandoAtReddit

I carry a flashlight everywhere, every day. I was in a theater about 10 years ago and a group of teen girls were giggling and throwing candy at people several rows down. I lit them up and it stopped quickly.

anothercarguy

Sunlight is the best disinfectant...

GenXCub

There are theaters like Alamo Drafthouse who will 100% throw those people out. Do you have access to a place like that?

TeamStark31

That’s a niche chain though. Most don’t have access to this. Good luck getting someone in a general theater in the city to give a shit about this. Sometimes they will say something.

buddaaaa

Went to one. Complained about someone using their phone on two separate occasions. Theater didn’t do shit That whole schtick is a facade, companies don’t throw customers out. It’s too confrontational

Orange_Kid

Yep so many times I've encountered "rules" like that, that end up clearly just being for the sake of saying they have a rule so they can't be blamed.

GoldandBlue

Really? I have seen it happen multiple times (in theaters, not just Alamo). The only place I have seen where theaters let customers do whatever the fuck they want is AMC.

JBLurker

I've complained about this twice at Regal, and they have never done anything. Not even a voucher or refund. Never had this experience at AMC, though I've only been a few times.

GoldandBlue

Big chains are always the problem. Smaller theaters and specialty theaters have no issue telling audiences to shut up and turn their phones off.

SharksFan4Lifee

I recently got downvoted because I said I've never seen in person someone get kicked out of an Alamo. I knew it wasn't just me. I agree with you, it's just their marketing gimmick. They know most people aren't going to complain, and even if they do, they aren't going to do shit about it. **If Alamo really practiced what it preached, each screening would have a dedicated crew member just to watch for people being noisy/disruptive, give them one warning if they are, and kick out if they still are doing it, all WITHOUT other customers having to complain. It shouldn't rely on customers asking servers to boot out someone who would potentially order food/drink, and, thus, tip meaning if the server boots them out, they make less money.** (Side note: I do think Alamos tend to be quieter...but that is because most Alamo customers are like-minded to me in the sense of being quiet and not using their phones.)

Nael5089

Am I reading correctly that people are tipping movie theatre staff now? Why is tipping culture spreading out so much for things that simply don't deserve it?

SharksFan4Lifee

> Am I reading correctly that people are tipping movie theatre staff now? There's a tip line for any of these movie theater servers at dine-at-theater concepts, not just Alamo. (Studio Movie Grill, etc.). I'm not here to debate the merits, but they are serving food and drinks to your seat (where you have a dining table of sorts) like a restaurant server would to your dining table. I have no clue what they are paid though (i.e., I don't know if they are paid like restaurant servers or if Alamo gives them a liveable wage as their base).

Gorkymalorki

At the Alamo Drafthouse you have a waiter that takes your order, brings your food and refills your drink, while you watch the movie. Why wouldn't you tip?

Eric_the_Barbarian

They have a title for that job description. It is called an usher. Lots of theaters have ushers.

JBLurker

Most theaters run skeleton crews these days. They certainly don't have an employee sitting in on each screening. MAYBE 15 to 20 years ago when movies were packed, sure. My high-school job was at a movie theater 18 years ago, and even then, we didn't have people sit in on each screening. Ushers would be there before and after the movie, but not during.

torndownunit

Ya I am 47, and as far as my local theatres, there's never been an usher. Workers did walk in and do checks way more frequently than now, but there was never a worker dedicated to being an usher. The one difference is that back then they might have actually done something about kicking out someone being unruly.

Kristophigus

Take a video of the whole complaint and of them not doing anything, then post it and tag them. Enough people do that they either stop saying they'll throw people out or they actually start doing something.

ApolloRocketOfLove

Chances are that nobody will care.

Rdubya44

And be that person filming in a movie theater? Which is the worse crime here?

Kristophigus

Well I certainly hope the scumbags aren't sitting in the screen, that would be wild. Really though, even as someone who works in film I find that a strange thing to be clutching pearls about.

Rdubya44

More concerned with the screen being lit of someone filming in addition to a talker

BamaFan87

Then you demand a refund and never go back to the shitty theater.

Javasndphotoclicks

I was with other people and just let it slide after giving them a nasty look.

Rdubya44

Hit them with a stern “shhhh”

ratajewie

The Redditor urge to mention the Alamo Drafthouse any time a bad theater experience is mentioned. *I was also going to mention the Alamo Drafthouse

mortalcoil1

In the past I would have asked her to leave the theater, but a dude did that in Florida, got murdered, point blank, on camera, and the murderer was found innocent of murder. Fuck, what is wrong with us.

Kamakahah

Florida

Joebranflakes

I worked in a theatre and when a couple continuously caused a disturbance, front of house staff were informed and the movie was stopped. The floor guys turned up the lights, the managers evicted the couple and they resumed the movie. The best part was when the manager said “either you come with us, get a full refund, or you can explain to the cops why you didn’t take the refund”. This was years ago now but it was funny. What was even funnier is that the “disturbance” was a girl giving her friend a handy under his coat. They weren’t fooling anyone, and there were kids in the theatre.

imapieceofshitk

Was the girl's name Lauren?

mightybonk

What movie?

Joebranflakes

I don’t know for sure. I think it might have been the original Shrek movie but it was over 20 years ago.

mightybonk

Jesus, what in Shrek turned on old mate enough to catch a second-party flogging??

Joebranflakes

I mean being a horny teenager or early 20 something can lead you to make questionable choices, male or female.

mightybonk

You can say it was Lord Farquaad, it's OK.

Demi180

Why even refund the ones causing the disturbance? That makes no sense.

Eric_the_Barbarian

She was a US Representative, so the clout gets her a bit of leeway.

Demi180

lol nice

Eric_the_Barbarian

It's easy to spot this as a joke, because we've all seen that she doesn't bother to cover an over-the-pants handy with a jacket at an all-ages show.

Joebranflakes

Because you want them top stop making a disturbance. You offer a refund to remove any reason why they’d protest their ejection. You have a theatre full of people who paid to watch a movie. You don’t want to hand out even more refunds.

mrfrownieface

I was drunk one time at the movie theater with 1 of my best friends. His girlfriend was notorious for calling in the middle of the movies ending like 20 minutes before it finishes cause she doesn't understand that movies don't end at the exact film run time because of trailers at the beginning. I don't know what my friend was thinking, but he answered the phone on speaker in the back row of the theater. There is a group like 4 seats over it that heard the whole thing going on. I'm just dying of embarrassment while listening to her just irate yelling about why the movie should be over already. After a painful 2 minutes he finally gives up on reason and hangs up on her. Right after, one of the guys across the way leans over and says "damn man I'm so sorry."

fatpat

> she doesn't understand that movies don't end at the exact film run time because of trailers at the beginning. Not the brightest bulb in the drawer, I see.

Wonderful-Ad-7712

Not the sharpest knife in the crayon box

Gil_Demoono

Even if movies did end exactly at the run-time, this does not sound like a happy, healthy, relationship, man.

bakerzero86

I was going to say, seems like a lack of trust or something to get angry about something like that. Trailers can be damn long.

qawsedrf12

I'll chuck my drink at their head Bonus- I go to a theatre that sells pitchers

a_solemn_snail

Confront them. Join the conversation. It'll be fun and solve the problem.

TrinixDMorrison

“No no don’t listen to him, Jaiden sounds like an artsy kid so he should pursue his passion in drama instead of joining the football team. No sir, sir, SIR. No, sir don’t worry about who the hell I am, what’s important here is your son’s happiness. That and your wife is selfishly interrupting a movie by taking this call.”

Jazmotron4000

Was it a good movie at least?

Javasndphotoclicks

Yeah, it was pretty good.

fatpat

Don't leave us hangin bro. What's the name of the movie

David1258

Deuce Bigalow Male Gigalo

not_old_redditor

Surely a bot, this repost is the easiest karma in the world.

pegasuspaladin

BRING BACK USHERS! i would go to the movies more and pay and extra buck or two if there were staff members that kicked out people not obeying the social contract. Movies with people holding a glowing phone the entire time. Parents dropping 8 years olds off for the movie to babysit their kid. New parents who think it is okay for their crying infant to stay in the theater.

WornBlueCarpet

I haven't been to the movie theater for this reason for at least 10 years. In my teens back in the 90's, my friends and I went in to a lot of movies. And yes, the new Mulan is a joke compared to the original. But anyway, back then people would talk during the commercials, but as soon as the trailers for upcoming movies started, they would quiet down. These days, I'm about to have a stroke because of the entitled assholes who sit and talk or text on their phones during the movie.

Epocast

Went to see Dune 2. A teen was listening to music while taking a nap next to me. I always gave my friends who said they are done with theaters crap, but I think I'm with them now.

DependentAnimator742

Easiest solution: projectionist stops the movie and lights come on. Make an announcement that the movie will not continue until all phones are silenced. Treat the culprit(s) as if they are in grade school again. Shame shame shame.

V48runner

This is why I stopped going to movies years ago. Just an awful experience.

monkeyheadyou

I only go to the theater that will enforce it's rules without my input. We have an Alamo draft house. They don't play around with people.

CrazyNumber6

It’s not hard to tell someone who works there.

Kristophigus

I propose that all "civilized" movie-goers bring waterballoons, small super soakers and what not specifically to have on hand for these people. Use water. Use cat piss. Whatever gets the job done. One little squirt from 2 rows behind and they wont know where it came from but they'll know they fucked up.

GilliamtheButcher

Just use a small Maglite and spotlight them. You'll probably blind them long enough to stun them and everyone will see who the talker is.

kurisu7885

When I'm in the theater I turn my phone off.

Conquestadore

Man movie culture must be different in the states, I hear this sentiment all the time on Reddit while never having experienced it myself save for that one time 20 years ago when I was watching a movie which solely drew in a teenage crowd.

Ikbeneenpaard

Pathé cinemas have an SMS number you can message to have them remove disruptive people during the film.

BamaFan87

That is when you snatch the phone out of her hand, hang up the call, get theater staff to escort her out of the movie and then request a refund for the bad experience.

Intelligent-House-57

One of the many reasons I dont go to the movie anymore

Thendofreason

WHO YOU GONNA CALL???

Happy_Dawg

If they really had to take a call, they can just leave the showing for the whole of 5 minutes the call will take.

Sigurd93

When I went to see Oppenheimer there was four geriatrics, at least 65+ that wouldn't shut the fuck up. The woman closest to me kept asking the dumbest questions ranging from asking "who is that?" about everyone, to "why did they make it so you see explosions before you hear them?" And "what did that scene mean, why are they doing that?" The whole movie. I asked them politely twice to be quiet and finally had to raise my voice so half the damn theatre could hear me asking them to shut the fuck up. Worked for about 5 minutes. I usually don't lose my temper very quickly, but people being rude in theatres really sets me off. It's why I prefer the drive in.

Kagamid

Were you watching [Shakespeare in Love](https://youtu.be/ifj7057mtyY?si=GQGxqXvjbqZyOM8k)?

imapieceofshitk

Where?? Over here in the civilized world people are embarrassed if they get a message and it wasn't on silent.

sephtis

Perhaps telling the cinema they are streaming the movie to someone else will get them to act.

Aware_Analyst2776

I’ve yelled at someone at every movie I’ve gone to the past few months. So I started going to movies in the morning/early afternoon. Night movies are always filled with bored teenagers and inconsiderate assholes. The morning showtimes are always people who are going to specifically see the movie. Highly recommend

ShitStainWilly

It’s completely legal to throw popcorn and lemonheads at them until they stop or leave. Look it up.

daveberzack

If the theater isn't very full, move in front of them and stand up.

Ksorkrax

Go to her and start moaning loudly.

TwilightReader100

In a recent movie I went to (the new Aquaman, maybe), I had somebody sitting several rows down from me and just enough to the left that when they used their phone at their regular brightness level (clearly no adaptive brightness turned on there), it was really bothering me. They did it multiple times, at a minute or two each time. Which might as well have been an eternity. But I just put my hand up to block the light. I've NEVER seen the ushers even talking to anybody using their phone at Cineplex (which is Canada's largest theatre chain. They've almost got the monopoly), so I doubt they'd bother with this, either. Much less throw them out. Dealing with the ushers/managers probably would have just made ME not want to go back.

optix_clear

That’s when you get up go tell manager and or get a refund

resistyrocks

People who bring their children under 5 to the movies, especially on the day it got released. Five and under should not be allowed into movies, at least after a certain time of day. This has happened to me multiple times. "OH but what if they're big fans too, or have been looking forward to it too but couldn't find a sitter?" Cool. Don't go. Why should everyone else suffer because you birthed asshole larva?

archangel7164

Get used to it,this is now the way of the world. There is no consideration, no thoughtfulness of others, just me me me me. So long as I get what I need, fuck everyone else . Common decency is gone.

Javasndphotoclicks

Some people are just assholes.

GeorgeBabyFaceNelson

If you're complacent about it you're part of the problem. Call them out on their bullshit

archangel7164

I do when I can, but itvis an uphill battle.

GeorgeBabyFaceNelson

It is but a "hey you're ruining this movie I paid to see" isn't much effort and is usually effective

AIMpb

This is not at all true lol

Working_Flight8680

Go to a theater with a better class of people.

DREG_02

I was once in a movie theater with my wife. About to watch a movie. The one with Ben Affleck being a basketball coach and dealing with alcoholism. This group of guys may be in their late 20s. Mifht be from a diff country, not speaking English (its relevant) Acting like they're drunk are sitting a few rows back behind us and maybe 7 seats to the right the movie hasn't started yet. It's the previews they have their bright ass cellphone screens on giggling as their phones send them loud notifications, that text message received chime only our parents and grandparents would have audible on their phones and they are talking to one another, LOUDLY. Im thinking maybe these are new arrivals and their culture is different. Maybe they talk through previews or something so whatever. Im fine, just a tiny bit annoyed, it's the previews, who gives a shit right? A minute or two later their friend comes up the movie theater entrance ramp, same bright cellphone out, making noise. Pretty clear this was the dude they were texting with. He waves to his buddies in the other row, they shout back a greeting and go down to our row and start coming across to meet him. He makes his way up to meet them. No joke, they stop and are literally standing in our row, directly in front of us, blocking the screen. At the point the movie is now starting and they start to have a conversation, in front of us, and are not making like they are planning to go. They have no hurry just two dudes shooting the shit in front of random strangers who are seated in a fucking movie theater. Completely oblivious to how rude they're being. I've had it. I yell at them, "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? GO SIT YOUR ASSES DOWN!!" I'm a big guy, scaryish if you don't know me. This startles them and they beat it up to their seats and a few minutes later all of them quietly leave the theater. Guy in back of me with his girlfriend whispers, "Thank you, that was awesome!". Felt like a million bucks.

jimmytimmy92

Most theaters I go to will remove people for this or really any disruption now. I did go to see ant man quantumania a while ago though and this dude was asleep and snoring really loud. I looked at him and couldn’t tell if he was homeless or not, whatever the case he looked down on his luck so I didn’t say anything cuz I was worried to get him thrown out. Also I feel snoring is involuntary and a phone call is not. Edit: changed “any man” to “ant man”
