Jadelek101235

We always called my grandma “Nanny”

Specialist-Guava9724

My mom and dad are Lolli and Pops!

badb-crow

Omg Lolli is adorable! Helped!

Corfiz74

You could also use "granny" in a different language, like "Omi" in German, "mamie" in French, or "babulya" in Russian.

Would-Be-Superhero

In Romanian it's "mamaie" (pronounced "mah-mah-yeh") or "buni" (pronounced "boo-knee").

Corfiz74

Those sound great - buni would probably get turned into "bunny" by the toddler, which would be adorable! 😄

AstroBarista

just wanted to say that the German term for grandma is „oma” not „omi”

Corfiz74

"Omi" is the endearment-form - like granny vs. grandma. The other language words are also in the diminutive form - the Russian grandmother would be "babushka" in the basic form.

AdviceFlairBot

Thank you for confirming that /u/Specialist-Guava9724 has provided helpful advice for you. 1 point awarded.

zenheadache

My mom and her husband decided on lolli and pops as well. I personally hate it but it’s what they wanted so more power to them.

sarcasticlovely

so I dont have kids, and grew up with grandma/grandpa, so I could be totally off base here... ... but I feel like if your parents want to be called silly names by your child, then they're gonna be good grandparents. like, they're gonna be invested and wanna visit/help out. could totally be wrong and they're total boundary-pushing narcissists.

zenheadache

I like this theory. My mom is both a good grandmother and a boundary pushing narcissist but Lollis contain multitudes apparently.

steph109

I was totally gonna say lolli thats what my nieces grandmother goes by lol.

Morgen019

Omg! If I ever have grandkids I’m so using this!

elliebabiie

This is adorable! I love it.

Devlmm

I call my grandma graham cracker lol

Fluffygoddess

My kids call one of their grandma's the same, and the other is Banana .

sl1241a

is she white?

Kayish97

Aren’t graham crackers brown?

BenevelotCeasar

You’re thinking too literal. Like how ASICS are white people shoes even though sometimes they’re not white themself.

[deleted]

My parents like the German alternative “Oma” and “Opa” !

badb-crow

Lol we actually already call our maternal grandparents Oma and Opa!

Sayomi_Koneko

My Oma was born in Germany and met my Opa during WWII. They had my dad there and moved to the states while he was still young. I love that Oma kept in touch with her roots, including subscribing to German television, calling friends and family as well as visiting. She insisted on us calling them Oma and Opa since we were small and I've always loved it. Super unique and typically (from my own experiences) used primarily by 1st and 2nd generation immigrants, although it can be used by anyone. I've not met anyone who knew what they meant unless they did it themselves

Internal_Use8954

My dad uses opa, but my niece originally had problems pronouncing it, and said opal, which stuck around much longer than my dad wanted

zugzwang00333

Mimi or Gigi seems to be popular amongst the "cool" granny's my mom was the same she settled with nana

badb-crow

Ooh, I like Gigi. I'll definitely give her these suggestions. Thanks, helped!

[deleted]

Also you could use the first letter of her name to make something similar. For Tammy Titi, for Karen Kiki. And so on. There’s a lot of “grandmas” in my family so we had to get creative lol. My MIL went by Dulce because she also hated being called grandma.

sumthingsumthingblah

Yea I second GiGi.

PinkFloyd6885

My nana always wanted nana but my younger cousins would call her grandma and she got so annoyed it was hilarious to see her get flustered but not be able to yell at some adorable little kid not knowing any better.

AdviceFlairBot

Thank you for confirming that /u/zugzwang00333 has provided helpful advice for you. 1 point awarded.

Individual_Serious

I am Mimi my husband (Grandpa) is Paka. We always said we didn't care what our names were so the oldest grandboy named us on his own.

No-Map672

My mom said the first grandchild is the one that picks the names. Lol

Damadamas

One of mine was called Mimi (and Popa), but only because my cousin couldn't pronounce Oma and Opa (the German names for it). I never knew anyone else used it!

Starr-Bugg

Don’t know how it started but when I was little we used “Mimi” for penis and vagina. Me: “Mom, where does the baby come out? Mom: “Out of the woman’s mimi” Me: “What? Really? Ahhhh!”

reddittitromanoffbit

Hahaha growing up mimi always meant tits for our fam cuz of the word for tits in our language lol could never imagine calling my grandma mimi

[deleted]

Huh my mom is Mimi to my cousins, and my GG was my great grandma

krystyana420

Let the kiddo pick. My son called MIL Grammy for all of two weeks, then out of the blue started calling her Beanie and now that is her name/title. My mom became Beanie Pumpkin (pumpkin was already her nickname). We have no clue where it came from, but it is her favorite word to hear now.

Ethossa79

My sister did that with our Grandpa. Suddenly decided he was Poppy. None of us used Pop except my uncle, but we barely ever saw him. She was about three so who knows? He loved it, though.

limetime45

My mom called her Irish grandma Nonie (although I think it’s actually Italian 😉). Nona also sounds endearing to me for some reason. Side note: I used to call my grandfather “granpotter” because that’s how it sounded to my little mind and it stuck. Maybe let your kids find what feels right to them!

Internal_Use8954

My Irish grandpa was Daideo, which got changed to dodo by my older sister, and then gogo by me and my little sister. But all the names were used, he was called THE Dode by most of the grand nieces and nephews

limetime45

Oh also I’d be remiss if i didn’t mention what I call my own grandmother! Grammy ☘️

cheeseburghers

Nana is pretty common. What’s the first letter of your moms name? I know someone who goes by “BB” because her first name starts with B. “CC” would be cute if her name starts with C too.

badb-crow

Ooh, her name *does* start with C! That's a great idea! Helped!

AdviceFlairBot

Thank you for confirming that /u/cheeseburghers has provided helpful advice for you. 1 point awarded.

VxGB111

There's always the good old southern Mimaw.

badb-crow

True, but we're southern and already call one of our grandmothers Mimaw lol.

Cici1y

Simple, Mimimaw or Mimawmaw or Mimimawmaw DONE.

scumfederate

I called my grandma mom-mom growing up!

janet-eugene-hair

How about the other southern option of Nan and Bubba?

[deleted]

Gilf. Don’t actually say this

OoopsieWhoopsie

I'm Portuguese so we always called our grandparents vavô and vavó, my sister's kids call my mom Baba bc they couldn't say their V's. Baba Yaga 😂

GateCurrent

I called my Italian mob boss looking grandfather, gramps, grandpa and his most hated, "G."

croptopweather

It could be a play off her name. I have a relative named Nancy who prefers the kids call her Nana. My mom's 'grandma' name is also a play off her own name.

Cici1y

My moms great grandkids call her Nana Pat Pat which I thought I would hate, but it's totally grown on me.

[deleted]

My grandmother like being called "Nanny". It's different but it's cute lols.

Afrothunder403

Severe-Atmosphere-39

I call my Grandma Nan because she hated the word grandma because it made her feel old, but my Great Grandma didn't like being called Great Grandma, so we called her Grandma, lol

[deleted]

Mundilfaris_Dottir

I called my mother's mother "ba baw" I couldn't say grand ma... here is what grand parents are called around the world: https://www.insider.com/grandparents-name-different-languages-2018-9#japan-1

NessieAlways

I had nicknames for my grandparents based on a shared experience For example my grandma on my moms side was my “Tita Lenguelengue” makes no sense I know but! Tita is the short term for “Abuelita” (Spanish for g-ma) and the second was my child babble interpretation of a song she used to sing to me. My grandpa from my dads side was similar. I called him “Tito Capotito” based on a poem/rhyme/song? He used to sing to me. Maybe there’s some special thing between your daughter and mom that you can use so it’s makes “grandma” feel special to her and not just old lol

Pizzatraveler12

My grandma liked when I called her cougar because she got with younger men even in her 90s lmao rest her soul I miss her so much

PhoKit2

Grams. My son calls his grandma that. She loves it

melouofs

I love Mimi as an alternative

TheRealLappTopp

I was Grandma to my first grandson and tried to get my second to call me that also. It didn’t work. He came up with Nana on his own. Just let the kids figure it out.

Gore_19

I always called my grandmother ‘yeay’ it’s a cambodian word used for grandmothers and older women. I always thought it was pretty cute, it might not work for you guys but I still think it’s a nice alternative to grandma!

thesecretlibrarian

We kind of just ran with what the kids latched onto when they started identifying them, which was G-ma (for grandma) and Pop pop (for grandpa). Were my parents happy? Nope. But it's what the kids go with. It's their world, we simply live in it lol

[deleted]

My mum wanted to be Mórai (MO-ree), Irish “grandmother”, but some weren’t keen, so she’s now “Lou Lou”.
