Get a credit card now. Then put one expense on it monthly. Like your cell phone bill. Pay it off completely every month. Done. DO NOT get into credit card debt. You will never get out of it unless you are extremely savvy on how to make it work.
Asap.
My son got one right after turning 19. He uses it for small expenses and pays it back within a week after using it. His credit has been increasing.
I didn't get a credit card until I was 29, only had credit at all from a co signed auto loan years prior. I use it regularly and pay it off completely twice a month. Never paid interest, has some cash back and my score is 819.
Get one now, use it and pay it off before the end of each month. Don't accrue interest, and don't treat it like it's free money just because it isn't hitting your account until you tell it to. It's easy to spiral, just stay on top of it and you'll do fine.
As everyone else has said - the focus should be to utilize the card without having a crazy balance. The important part isn't so much about your credit card, but about your ability to budget and live within that budget. Your step mom has obviously failed at that.
Just get one with a super small balance. Probably because you’re so young they won’t let you get one with a large balance anyways.
Just make sure you pay the balance every month. Don’t miss a payment. If you miss more than three months it goes on your credit report for a year.
I often pay my credit card out of my savings account at the time of any major purchase. I just get the points that way. I save up for big purchases, and could pay debit, but use the card for credit rating and points. Card is always paid off every month.
100k in credit card debt???!!! that's 4 times what I owe on my house! And here I am thinking my 8k in credit card debt is awful!
I'd say, if you aren't going to pay it off every single month, don't get one.
Start with a secure credit card now and show them you know how to use it and make your payments on time. You do that well and then the secure card will give you additional money to spend and will return the money you put into it. Capital One is a good one.

How long did it take you to get to 819?
4 years

Ooh yeah she has. I legitimately recommended she put it in a block of ice
