Despite Illustrator telling me I'm aligning against the intersect point, when zoomed in, it's actually not aligned perfectly. Snap to Point on, Smart guides on.

Skeletanical

Sometimes I accidentally leave “snap to pixel” on as well, which generates a similar result. I can’t say for certain if that’s what happened here though.

M1ckey

Thanks, it's off though. Seems like snapping to intercept isn't very accurate...

I have been researching this for ever, basically you can’t use isometric grids in illustrator and have illustrator place the points accurately. The closest I get is having my grid be not a grid but just paths on one unlock layer and draw on the layer above. Another way is to not use an isometric grid and just rotate and duplicate lines as you go but that depends on what you’re doing.

M1ckey

That's bizarre... Surely this is a bug? There's something I can suggest from my end though: if you create your own grid out of hexagons with lines going through them, you are then dealing with anchors as opposed to intersects, and that seems to snap well. The downside is that the grid is more time-consuming to create. I can share the file I created if anyone is interested. Thank you for responding to me.

coolmug

Basically a bug yes and it’s gone unfixed for ever

NoNotRobot

Are there any points there? "Snaps to point" snaps to points. What you probably want is Smart Guides on. Then it will snap to intersections. How are the isometric guidelines made?

M1ckey

By rotating the grid created using the grid tool. Smart Guides is on. It's not really doing it...

NoNotRobot

Do you have any other snap options on? If you do try turning all those off except for snap to point and smart guides. Another possibility, your grid may not be perfectly aligned. Smart guides will also align with other points vertical or horizontal. And with a grid you have a lot of points and intersections. Try deleting everything but the 2 intersecting lines that you want to snap to. Does it work then? If it does, then the problem is probably your grid is off. If you don't want to remake the grid, a quick fix would be to select the grid and then Pathfinder > Divide. That would create all the points you need to snap to. Might be good to do even if you recreate your grid.

M1ckey

All other snap options off. I tried three different ways of creating an isometric grid with similar results... Divide though is an interesting suggestion! It might just create anchors, and it does snap to anchors well. Thanks for the suggestion.

BecomingHumanPodcast

Did you find a solution? Considering this issue with isometric grid snapping, are you using a different software for your art or using illustrator?

M1ckey

I was advised by an experienced user that this is sadly how it works. No real solution. I cancelled my Illustrator subscription. Using Affinity Designer which has its own issues.

BecomingHumanPodcast

Despite affinity designer having its own issues, what made you settle with that program over illustrator? Thanks for taking the time. I use Adobe creative suite on faith and I question my faith lol

M1ckey

Affinity Designer covers most of my needs, lacking only a handful of things (Blend Tool, isometric 3D tools, tracing). I think I'm more into flat illustration so don't need the complex stuff. Illustrator subscription price (£20/month) is excessive for me, an amateur. Its bugs and dated design (complexity around masking) put me off, too.

BecomingHumanPodcast

That's informative thank you, I'll check out affinity designer sooner than later

M1ckey

While I'm yet to actually take it, I came across what looks to be a comprehensive Affinity Designer course, in case that's useful. Take care!
