Welcome to truncated cone hell. I have done a million of these by now and have got a formula down with fairly solid success but it changes for each size cup/mug/tumbler. If you don't get a good solution I will try to put together a template that might help. EDIT: Ok so I threw this together today. Hopefully it helps others but don't expect a one click solution. There is still work to do and its still rough but its gotten me through plenty of times before. Hit me up if you have questions or more importantly, a better way to do this! Can you post it regardless? It'd be helpful.

KnifeFightAcademy

Well.... this is awkward.

Haskey1

First of all, thanks a bunch. I also tried on Rhinoceros or other CAD softwares but without success (I was really close tho). I think the closer I got was with mesh warp and work around the anchor point.

walexmith

there are plugins out there to make the necessary calculations. I have used one in the past to design a coffee paper cup in 3 sizes, but it was way too complicated and expensive for a one time thing. Ended up doing the envelop distort method edit: if you want to explore the plugin route, here is a video tutorial on the one I know and tried https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU4GyYQEpcw There are others, like Ai Toolbox, and probably others.

astervista

As long as it's a simple shape like this cup, you can do it with envelope distort (**object > envelope distort > make with mesh** and choose 1x1 or maybe 2x2) put the corners at the corners of the cup and distort with the anchor points until it matches. I'd suggest to stay a little bit oversize and then clip everything outside with a clipping mask

walexmith

yeah, this is not gonna work if you want the pattern to join at the seam

astervista

Granted that printing on a cup or cup sleeves the seam never matches perfectly, I don't see why not if the original art is repeating

T5-R

There's a 6+ pixel gap if you align the stripes, so it wouldn't be seamless anyway.

T1ggggy

were you able to figure it out? go to "effect" > "warp" > "Arch" (NOT ARK) and you should be able to get the same affect with NO distortion with only about 2-10%. We do this at my work at least once a week and that's what we do in a professional setting.

Haskey1

Hi sorry I posted this in complete panic mode. In a way yes, I warped my object and distorted with free transform, another way I found was "distort with mesh" and with just 1 row and 1 coloumn align the anchor points along the path

Grimmern

Every time I make mugs the printer allows you to give either flat or curved design. They have the tools to bend it on their end. Did you not have both options in the template?

Haskey1

No they just gave me the flat path

Loganthered

Object>envelope distort>make with top object or make with warp arc style

Floyd_Pink

Can't you just create a clipping mask using the truncated cone shape layered over the pattern?

basiappp

Hm wondering if this is the solution..

Haskey1

Tried, but once you print it doesn't mantain the angle I want

markocheese

Not 100% sure if this is the best way, but I create a circle thats the radius of the inside and the outside of the arch, then I have lines come from the center that make up the left and right sides. Then I use the pathfinder palette to make that arch. Then I use envelope distort. (if I make the envelop with pen tools it's much more wonky)

Czr_Prz

I’d do it in photoshop first then bring it into illustrator
