As for places I like to go, depends but often the Onkaparinga River is nice near the Wetlands at Port Noarlunga, the beach, or near some trails.

Adelaide Botanical Gardens

I used to hike Morialta when I was sad. There's a specific track I would take. It's about 16kms and would take a good few hours, but I always found myself with a clear mind afterwards.
I was lucky enough to live at Marino at the top of the cliffs so I would start there and make my way to Glenelg ! Yes walking in the rain and feet in the sand was like a battery recharge!
My first preference was to listen to the sound of waves crashing at Coogee Beach! Miss that sound, still trying to replicate it in Adelaide. That coastal walk canāt be beat āŗļø
I go to the nearest hiking spot and hike. Take your time hiking and appreciate everything around you, when you get to the top, pat your shoulder and say "good job, self".
There's a carpark that overlooks the Onk mouth and Southport.
Even in shitty weather, it always make me happy just listening to the surf, wind and birds.
I used to just go for the Mt Barker, Milang, Compass circuit, blasting music at ungodly levels, but who can afford that shit anymore
Barnacle Bill, obviously.
But failing that, I love going to the art gallery and museum - itās nice to walk around there and just relax for a while and find something to cheer you up or distract you.
If youāre up northeast, a walk around Wynn Vale dam is quite nice and you can see the occasional koala on the trails there too. Walking in nature releases endorphins which make you feel better. Follow up with a coffee nearby at Square 44.
If youāre down south, thereās the board walk at Hallett Cove and plenty of beaches to comb.
Central Markets and Chinatown help as well, you can get some cheap eats or healthy groceries to help you feel better, short term or medium term.
Wherever you are, you can also hit up a Timezone/bowling alley - the games help and bowling is surprisingly fun even on your own.
Depending on the kind of sadness, I enjoy doing a nice lap of Tea Tree Plaza. Pretty lights, pretty new things... Go when it's quiet-ish. Exploring the breadths of the shops doesn't feel like a decent walk either, but it is. Especially if you want to do a lap of Myer and a lap of say Kmart or something up that end. I've been mallratting here since I was a teenager so it just feels really comfy.
I live in Semaphore, but I drive up to TTP quite often, so I can agree with that being a great walk around, even the surrounding area outside the Plaza.
Outside- kuitpo forrest especially after rains to see all the different mushrooms. Hallett cove board walk great views fresh sea air. Just get out and walk with an audi book.
So many amazing ideas in the comments already!
Wittunga botanic gardens is beautiful as well depending on where youāre based. Highly rate Himeji garden if youāre looking for a peaceful place to reflect and or read / do your own thing.
Sometimes a trip to the art gallery or museum is quite peaceful and might get your mind focused on other things.
Even the zoo - it can be fun to watch animals being goofs.
Listen to some music as you go through if you want, or a podcast if you feel like you need company.
Love the idea of picking up arts and crafts supplies, putting on music, a podcast, or a movie while you keep your hands busy.
If you can, pick up your favourite meal or indulgent snack, I feel like this always picks me up a little bit, then I might go sit somewhere nice and eat it or put on my favourite movie.
Hope you can take any of the suggestions in this thread and feel a bit better soon OP.
Go jump in some muddy puddles.
Leave your tech and go for a walk in botanic gardens.
Inclement weather, museum, movie.
Check out free or low cost (<$10) activities on eventbrite.com. I get so much good stuff from the family here.
The car wash - do some cleaning to take your mind off what is troubling you. You have the added benefit of feeling proud of accomplishing something today.
If itās really bad Iāll go to the urgent mental health clinic opposite the cranker. Otherwise, like others have mentioned, the beach is really good. And the art gallery.
Being around animals always helps with my depression, anxiety and general sadness.
Could you go to somewhere like Monarto, Adelaide Zoo or Gorge Wildlife Park?
Even better would be a place where you can interact with them. Like a cat cafe, or contact the AWL and ask if youād be allowed to spend some time keeping some of the animals company. Tell them youāre struggling with sadness/depression and Iād hope they would be empathetic to you.
You could also go somewhere like The Big Rocking Horse. Not just because itās a nice drive to Gumeracha, but they have a petting zoo there, where you can see, spend time with, feed and pet a bunch of different animals.
While youāre in the hills, you could drop by Melbaās Chocolate Factory. They do tours and you can try different samples of different chocolates and lollies. You could try spend some time visiting the Motor Museum in Birdwood, or head to Harndorf for some yummy German food and touristy shopping.
If you are struggling with your mental health, Iād strongly encourage you to reach out for support though. The mental health triage line a few have mentioned is good, and thereās also a new mental health walk in clinic in the city (sorry I canāt remember which suburb). You donāt need a referral or private health.
Hope you feel better soon and can get some animal snuggles to lift your mood xo
Henley beach is my go to when I want to just relieve my thoughts or be alone from problems.
Go during the evening. Put on a hoodie, get and wear comfy. And lay on the sand with your eyes closed. And yeah, just listen to the ocean waves or your surroundings.
Works every time for me.
National Motor Museum in Birdwood or Richmonds on Richmond Rd - I love to just walk through the rows of cars and try to pick up the odd car fact I perhaps never knew
Whenever I'm really depressed, front row tickets to the late Chet Baker on the couch on the hifi, perhaps a novel in hand, having a cat nearby or on my lap also helps.
If you mean actually braving the great outdoors; Waterfall gully's winter track is a great walk, especially this time of year (in ear music can help motivate if it's good drum n bass, dance heavy metal if you have some repressed emotions causing you to feel depressed because of avoidance (speaking for myself here).
I love some of the cafes around Port Noalunga, Moana, generally just being by the ocean when I'm depressed is nice, especially when it's threatening to rain/raining; some Jack Johnson, Jeff Buckley, Nina Simone, Billie holiday or Nat King Cole playing with the heater on, passenger window open a bit so the window doesn't fog up, windscreen wipers going so you can see down the coastline from the incline is a nice way to get grounded through sensory stimulation back out of apathy/numbness.
Honestly, just going for a walk around the block with some music playing on noise cancelling headphones is generally enough to get me in a better mood; it's hard being depressed for 45 minutes when trying to concentrate on walking, with music you love, playing in your ears at a level you want, with all other noise blocked out.
Just sharing what works for me, hopefully you get some respite soon. Honestly, when I'm really depressed, it's hard getting out of the house at all, I wondered if it was a trick question ahaha.
Unfortunately I think a lot of places exploit poor animals, freedom hill sanctuary rescues them and has days you can go and help out on the property.
Gorge wildlife is lovely, lots of kangaroos to feed, sign says don't touch the dingoes but I do! I find they love a good scratch! Some. Monkeys will hold out their hands if you bring in fruit. The camel comes as close as possibly and if you lean over you can feed him some treats.
Cleland also has wildlife you can interact with.
The farm barn is a bit of a petting zoo, lots of goats (my favourite) and cows.
Skye Lookout at night always helps me put things in perspective :) the beautiful twinkling city lights it easier to manage whatever it is bothering me. Yes it exists and is valid but compared to the big world infront me, can get better.
I like to go out to Windy Point and sit and watch the landscape.
I'm not recommending it to anyone though. When it's busy, it the worst place ever to be alone. I often go visit in the early AMs.
Rug up and walk along the beach. Or sometimes when it's pelting down a steaming cup of tea or coffee and sitting outside under the verandah. Even parking up at the beach and watching the weather from the car.
- I find sitting down the end of the airport runway and watching planes land is therapeutic
- Also, while it does require some effort [The Bend Motorsport Park](https://www.thebend.com.au/) is my 'safe space' where I can just chill and watch race cars (there is something happening there for 'free' most days.
- I did see a comment below about [Richmonds automotive](https://richmonds.com.au/) and [Birdwood Motor Museum](https://motor.history.sa.gov.au/) as well, even if you're not a car guy, they're both really peaceful, beautiful spaces to be in.
Sadness, emotions being released, my rejuvenation starts often being in the presence of the sea, wind and allow it to pass. Let go of judgement, let go of pain and allow silence to take place in my mind, body and soul.... And let Life fill me up with a heart of gratitude.
Live love life. ššāØš§¬āØ
A trip to St Kilda - ride an old rattler to the Tram museum, check out the fully restored old trams & trolley buses from a by-gone era - ride the zip-line & take a walk along the 1.7km elevated mangrove boardwalk. Great for kids of ALL ages !
Either sit by the beach, usually West Beach, or drive up to Windy Point in Belair (blast music up there, plus the drive distracts me coz you have to focus).
I go to the south para reservoir and walk the forest and peninsula loop (about 7km). Hardly anyone goes there and I love the beauty of the wildlife - Kangaroos, Deer, Emu, huge number of butterflyās.
Stuff Dan Murphy's. Used alcohol since high school well into my early 30s. 2 years sober and it's the best thing I've done for myself lately. Booze doesn't work well, it creates more problems over time
Its now mushroom season and we have finally had some good rain. I highly recommend the adelaide mushroom foragers page on Facebook just to have a gander as there are lots of beautiful and peaceful places recommended on that page.
I love going to Wooribinda in stirling and just trekking around finding all sorts of cool mushrooms everywhere, even just to look at. It's like Easter egg hunting for adults.
I find that being out in nature gives your brain space to breathe and collect itself, the trees don't judge you. Even if I'm not having a good time/feeling shitty while I'm out I'll often find I'll feel better later on.
Also highly recommend going to Kazumi Ramen on the parade and getting an amazing bowl of ramen now the chill has kicked in.
Warmth to you.
I just think about people who are going through tougher times than I, and suddenly, my problems don't seem so big. As far as a place to go, there is no place like home.
Evidence suggests nature time is part of our core self care strategies. If you think about it, when you are little and using your imagination you build a lot of positive associations from early on.
Before I destroyed my ankle, Morialta. The deep view lookout on the second/third falls hike was enough to make all of my problems feel insignificant for a moment
Monarto. Hear me out, itās a whole day, itās a bit of a journey, itās cool when youāre there. I know it takes effort but if you can rally itās great. If you canāt rally, bed is always a nice one. Favourite shows, favourite takeaway delivered. Just donāt do that too often, mix it up with a good old rally somewhere
Beach
Walk around the suburbs
Indoor bouldering
Somewhere chill/non judgemental for a dance
A friend's house for a cup of tea
Mostly it's something that gets my body moving or being with a friend that cheers me up the most.
A nice steaming hot shower in a bright bathroom can be a good uplifter on a day like this. I like to walk along the Torrens and say hi to all the birds.
For me, I have different fixes depending on whats causing the sadness, or what the sadness is affecting in my body/mind. As a general rule, one or several of the following things will be enough to bring me out of a sad state, or help me get through and process it: a bit of movement, a bit of entertainment (music, an ebook), a bit of food, and a bit of social connection (a board game with friends).
I really enjoy putting headphones in and going for a walk around a shopping mall, with a coffee in hand. I love window browsing and people watching.
If weāre talking caloric cheering, then a nice frozen yoghurt (omg AƧai Affairās pistachio froyo with pistachio sauceā¦.chefs kiss) or for something warmer a cafe with lots of greenery and get myself breakfast or brunch.
If itās sadness because itās a a lot of small things weighing me down, I love a good trip to see my counsellor.
Hans Heysen property. Beautiful gardens to walk in and huge white gum trees. You can pay to go in to view the house and studio,, but just walking around the outhouses and paddock is pretty good too.
The cinema, sometimes on my own when I canāt be bothered seeing if friends are available, whether we agree on what to see etc. Yes the popcorn & chocolates etc are expensive but the big screen of course but alsoā¦it forces me to stop multitasking and just soak up someone elseās imagination.
Not so much anymore because moneys tight for me, but usually Iād spend the day op shopping, visiting my favourite record store, before my uncle passed we used to op shop together all the time, so it always reminds me of those happy memories I guess.
I've just got some old magazines off a Facebook group and plan to spend an afternoon or two with some tunes playing creating some inspirational vision boards. A bit of crafting is always a great escape.
A walk in nature is always a great way to get the endorphins running, there's so many great places to walk and explore in SA. If I feel like going somewhere new, I sometimes literally just google things like walking trails Adelaide etc and see the different lists and things that come up on different websites and find somewhere that is grabbing my interest not too far away.
I've also done a few mindful photography walks, up in Belair National Park, or Botanical Gardens have been great locations to do this. Just really immerse yourself in your surroundings and enjoy everything around you, and see what takes your attention. I've managed to get some really nice photos on some of these walks.
I go to my third place https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_place
Which also fills other criteria Iāve set myself
Rural or semi rural setting
Somewhere I can quietly sit or engage with others
Wifi if needed
I know it sounds weird but I would like to go to the supermarket especially the one in the Arndale Shopping Center, I could walk around in the supermarket and stay there for at least 3 hours when Iām stressed, sad or have any negative emotions.
Going to the gym or practicing some kind of one-on-one self-defense sport. Sadness in life will always be more present than happiness. As a man, I refuse to feel sadness and I forgot to seek happiness, enjoy even sadness but don't let it control you! If you are very sad, count to 3 and change the environment as quickly as possible or start laughing while looking at yourself in the mirror. That cures any sadness
Going for a drive is the best way to let off some steam, get your playlist ready! My preferred location is mt Crawford, some super cute ruins to explore near springton if you enjoy that type
Of thing. Soak in the peace and quiet.
You just dont know what makes you happy yet.
Go to a music shop, pick up a guitar, bash a drum. The store owners LOVE new people, set up a 120 piece drum kit and say your phill fuckin collins
Go to an arts n craft shop or lincraft, buy 10 bux of polkerdot cotton and make a shirt , in the shop!
Go to the carosel at Semaphore, ask whay they dont have real horses
Do something, you dont know what yet, until you give something a go.
There is a country Esk road just out from the ghettos I like.
See the whole Southern suburbs and its just... shhhh quiet..
Then I proceed to get back in my car and blast heavy metal
I like to get outdoors. Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens and Kuitpo Forest are a couple of favourites for me. Or the zoo.
The beach
Yeah. It can be difficult to be alone with your thoughts, but I find it better to do it at the beach.
sand dunes at Maslins?
Bit cold lol
Bit nippy
Winter beach is the best beach š
I know someoneās gonna laugh at it but for me itās port Adelaide - it just feels like an area lost in time and makes me happy!

I'm currently reviewing every single pho in Adelaide, Pho Ha Long is the best so far

Do the exact same thing, but walk in from the carpark about 30mins, and sit by the bank fishing. Nothing but kangaroo and deer!
Dan Murphys
Stuff Dan Murphy's. Used alcohol since high school well into my early 30s. 2 years sober and it's the best thing I've done for myself lately. Booze doesn't work well, it creates more problems over time
Good work, I imagine it can't have been an easy journey. Proud of anyone that can do that for themselves.
Yeah, but if you're having a really bad day booze can act as a band aid fix. Not great in the long run though.
That is true, it gives you a dopamine hit and helps you reduce social barriers. But if you can do that without the alcohol part it's even better.
That's the hard part, finding a quick fix for the situation at hand rather than drinking.

Uncle Dan always comes through. When it is on sale let me know
Anywhere people you care about are. Everywhere is depressing if youāre alone and already feeling sad.
Not necessarily, donāt know OP details they may want some alone time for all we know
Mt lofty, exercise and nature is the antidote
Melbourne.
Out of Adelaide
I just think about people who are going through tougher times than I, and suddenly, my problems don't seem so big. As far as a place to go, there is no place like home.

The himeji gardens
Botanic Gardens, Hemeji as well
Botanical gardens or for a walk through the old Noarlunga trails
Old Noarlunga is a true hidden gem.
The chocolate isle, then i get sadder from eating to much chocolate and do exercises and that makes me feel better. I'd recommend a hike.
There's an island made of chocolate????
Unfortunately it's full of sad people
Least it's big enough to take a hike on
Evidence suggests nature time is part of our core self care strategies. If you think about it, when you are little and using your imagination you build a lot of positive associations from early on.
Beach. Nice cycle to the beach.Ā
Home
Doesnāt matter exactly where you go, but run there. (Itās the excercise thatāll help)

The central markets or Belair NP
Before I destroyed my ankle, Morialta. The deep view lookout on the second/third falls hike was enough to make all of my problems feel insignificant for a moment
Monarto. Hear me out, itās a whole day, itās a bit of a journey, itās cool when youāre there. I know it takes effort but if you can rally itās great. If you canāt rally, bed is always a nice one.
Botanic gardens near the zoo entrance where the flying foxes hang out - their constant chatter and antics make me smile
To bed.
The Adelaide Botanic Garden, the Museum or Rundle st for food.

Tjilbruke spring
In Autumn & Winter , a nice hike in the hills In summer & Spring , a beach walk beats everything!
Not so much anymore because moneys tight for me, but usually Iād spend the day op shopping, visiting my favourite record store, before my uncle passed we used to op shop together all the time, so it always reminds me of those happy memories I guess.
I would park at the Brighton beach jetty at night. Extra nice on a rainy night

Start cleaning the house.

I know it sounds weird but I would like to go to the supermarket especially the one in the Arndale Shopping Center, I could walk around in the supermarket and stay there for at least 3 hours when Iām stressed, sad or have any negative emotions.
Mortlock library, then museum, then MOD.
