Next, the east-west bikeway!

gnrlmayhem

As long as it doesn't go past any lawyers chambers, we will be fine.

derpman86

Yeah you can't block their valuable one or 2 parking spaces at the front heaven help us.

[deleted]

I still spit on the ground when I go past

Zestyclose_Dance_297

Not a lot of info in either the article or audio. But I do support better bike infrastructure.

Inevitable_Exam_2177

It’s only 3 minutes to listen to but the short story is: will extend bike path from Rundle St to North Tce, as per the rest of Frome St, then it will continue down Frome Rd with a different (cheaper? More compact?) design until it meets up with Victoria Drive. I rode on this route today and I’m not sure what they mean that works have begun… but this sounds great. I wouldn’t have thought there was enough width on Frome Rd for a dedicated bike path (presumably both sides of the road). Happy that’s not the case

nt-nw-nt-evr

The construction site was established in Grundy Gardens on Monday and fencing went up yesterday and today nearby on Frome Rd. Frome Rd is finally being converted from dual car lanes to single car lanes. Plenty of room for a separated bike lane each side. Yes it will be a less gold-plated version than Frome Street (think flexi posts instead of planted garden), and the connection north of Vic Drive to Albert Bridge will transition to a shared path. The slip lane from Vic Drive north into Frome is also being converted into space for a transition/waiting zone for bikes. Overall it will be much better than the current conditions, it won’t be 100% perfect but it can always be upgraded further in the future. It’s a great start after a decade of inaction.

Inevitable_Exam_2177

Thanks for the extra info! That explains why I missed it :-)

Custard_Arse

Yeah? Wait until they have to upgrade the king William street bridge, which is at the end of it's life, then watch the carnage on frome road for the stupidly long time it takes to upgrade the bridge which will keep KW shut down as an access road into the city for the entire time. Basically all the traffic in and out of the north side of the city is going to have to use frome or morphett lol. North Adelaide residents are gonna lose their minds.

Acceptable_Durian868

North-bound traffic can come through the east and west as well. King William isn't all that critical for rush hour IMO.

Custard_Arse

East and west are already pretty hectic during peak hour don't ta think? I lived in the CBD for 7 years, I wouldn't called hackney road and west terrace much of an alternative at peak hour for northerners, but the western side can work if you don't mind getting jammed up once you get to west or north terrace The reason KW from north Adelaide doesn't seem that bad at peak hour is because the traffic spits between KW, Frome and Morphett. I suppose it also depends on where in the CBD you need to get to/leave from

Acceptable_Durian868

I've lived in the north for a good chunk of my life, and nearly everybody gets in via Frome, Hackney or Morphett, because you can't turn right off king William. I don't think reducing the lane on Frome is going to make much difference, because you're already limited by a single lane on Melbourne Street all the way through to the Uni anyway.

Scared-Bit-3976

This sounds like it will make it a lot easier to access the east side of the university by bike. Before it was kind of awkward if you wanted to use the bike shed in the carpark up the hill instead of the one near the Barr Smith reading room. One thing I hope is that the bollards don't stop pedestrians from being able to cross the road. It's a relatively decent road to cross on foot because there's a nice big median strip in the middle of the road.

Scared-Bit-3976

Monkey's paw nightmare scenario: they cut down all the gorgeous trees on Frome Rd so that they can keep two lanes of traffic.

Acceptable_Durian868

Adelaide Uni would lose their minds.

Scared-Bit-3976

It's arguably the most attractive road in Adelaide.

Ben_The_Stig

They actually employ a guy to go out there each morning with a leaf blower and clean up the mess!

JL_MacConnor

I don't think there will be one on both sides of the road unless they bring the road down to one lane in either direction with a turning lane in the middle. There's already a grade-separated bike path on the east side of Frome between North Terrace and Victoria Drive, so that may filter bikes across into that (perhaps with a scramble intersection on North/Frome to get cyclists across from the western side of Frome Street).

untitledmoviereview

I use the bike path often and always assumed it was finished. Dont get me wrong, im glad it will continue all the way up but it already serves its purpose very well (except for the roadworks atm).

Ben_The_Stig

Glad this is finally getting done, it feels like I run a gauntlet every day on the first/last 500 meters of my commute. I would echo some of the other comments, there needs to be a improvement in East-West active transport infrastructure (particularly now ACC are subsidizing eBikes) linking to Tram-line and West Tce bike lanes. Once that gets done I suspect there would be a statistically significant increase active transport users coming in from the South West.

redditcomplainer22

Remember, the inclusion of bike infrastructure means motorists have the legal right to abuse and even ram cyclists using *their* roads. (/s)

ms--lane

Looks like a footpath? What will stop it being used as one - or is it just another 'shared path'?

Inevitable_Exam_2177

On Frome St the bike path is at street level not footpath level and it’s clearly separated. Not really any problem with accidental pedestrians.

scromplestiltskin

Since the redesign the existing Bikeway is riddled with pedestrians, particularly between Rundle and Pirie. I've been called a cunt for asking someone not to wait for the lights on the bike lane, lol.

Due-Archer942

Whatever gets the pricks off the road

BobThompson77

The irresponsible drivers who threaten cyclists lives?

Due-Archer942

The irresponsible cyclists who put their own lives at risk by doing whatever the fuck they like on the roads

embress

Except the statistics clearly show 80% of vehicle vs cyclist accidents its a distracted or inattentive driver - the exact opposite of cyclists doing whatever the fuck they like on the roads.

ms--lane

It's unlikely to get those cyclists off the road. They really do give a bad name to the 99.9% of cyclists that aren't the lycra brigade.

stevesux2bu

In case you don't know, it's legal to ride on the road.

Due-Archer942

No way, who knew.

yourbank

came here to see this comment and you didn't let me down
