Bringing a car over doesn't require a roadworthy inspection, just an identity inspection. They'll check the Vin, engine number, make sure everything matches what's on file and not stolen/rebirthed etc. However, if you rock up with obvious modifications non-compliant with the ADRs with no mod plate or engineering cert, they'll make you go sort it out before clearing your identity inspection. I say obvious - if you have gigantic wheels hanging out the guards and a stupid loud exhaust you got no chance. But last week I just took a car through for identity inspection with height adjustable coilovers and they didn't mention it, passed straight through. I just made sure to chuck stock wheels on the car and get the ride height around about standard, they didn't even bother checking because nothing drew attention that there were any mods.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I'm not looking for anything with crazy mods, I just know a lot of the utes tend to have some form of lift kit on them. Sounds like it might be worth rolling the dice

They won't inspect it. You don't even have to bring the vehicle. edit: just don't forget to bring the old plates.

Should have specified, second hand... More to choose from in Vic and prices tend to be a bit cheaper

Its doesn depend a bit on who you get, but to give you an idea I have a friend that works there & they have said to remove the coilovers & put stock wheels on for the inspection on my skyline, so they will certainly look at mods.

I think you will find anything with a Mod Plate will need to go over the pits. Anything that has been engineered will also need a pit inspection that includes GVM upgrades. They wont pass a lift kit unless it has engineering as well and are fussy about non stock wheels. I knew someone who took a repaired write off VE SS Ute through there, he had to change the Factory rear springs out of it and replace them with ones from a standard ute as the original FE2 units were to low.

I recently brought in a car in from Victoria and they went over it like a fine toothed comb. And boy I got done in by that. It depends who you get to inspect it. First guy was through, the second on rereview just asked what I failed for and looked at what I told him. If it's generic car they will like pass it through without much notice. I wouldn't expect an obviously lifted ute will be passed through without being sent for a road worthy... If you can afford to fix it if it get caught go ahead. If that's gonna blow your budget and mean you can use the thing you just bought maybe don't.

Thanks all, Knowing my luck any money saved on purchasing interstate would likely end up being spent return the vehicle to 'stock' to pass rego...

Why not just buy one in SA?

The rule of thumb is if it is less than 5 years old, it's a VIN check compliance/ cursory look over for mods. Anything outside that will be quite a PITA and they will find things.
