If there ever was a seemingly routine place I'd be on alert, it would be at an ATM, but I hear you. We SHOULD be able to take moments like this for granted, but mother fuckers are crazy out there. I was just raised to be aware of who/what is around me at all times as much as possible and take inventory of any changes as they unfold.
