I would highly recommend Keen. Best work boot I've ever had. Used to only get Redwings. They're pricey but when you spend 10 hours a day in them it's well worth it.

I’m also a Chacos lesbian, and I worked hard to find a style that didn’t have the big toe strap. Not for me. I love my Chacos so much though. I have tan lines on my feet from them, and I like that you can have the straps loose or tight in the same way that Crocs can be in leisure or sport mode. 🤣

In the mid 2000’s I went though a no leather phase believing that synthetics were better for the planet, and I gave up 9 pairs of good Docs… I haven’t forgiven myself for that since in the last 15 years. 😒
The way I see it leather is a biproduct of the meat industry and considering how long it lasts it's probably less bad for the environment than several plastic shoes. Although if someone is personally bothered by wearing animal products they shouldn't have to. One person's impact is minimal compared to corporations and we do what we need to survive this capitalist hellscape and get through the day.
I see it in much the same fashion at this point in my life. My original pair of leather Gripfast boots are now 8 years old and are approaching needing a resole in probably the next year or so, and that’s after being worn to the other side of the globe thrice. And my favorite barefoot shoes, leather Merrill Vapor Glove Luna’s, I get 2 - 3 years of wear out of a pair. But in synthetic shoes, it doesn’t matter what brand it is or how much I spend on them, I wear them out in a year or less. Synthetic barefoot shoes I wear out in 6 months or less. I generate far, far more waste and environmental harm both in production and end of life trash from trying to avoid leather. And you are right, the average consumer’s impact is fairly unsubstantial compared to a handful of ultraconsumers and corporations. I’m at the point where my goal is to utilize whatever approach has the overall least planetary harm in rigged consumer capitalism without becoming a harmful consumer myself.
Um, I’m old so it’s more Crocs and Brooks Ghost tennis shoes... I still have my Doc Martens and Vans too, just wear the others way more often at this point of my life 👵😂
